Why is there a prevalent negative perception of Punjabi students? I came to Canada as an international student nearly five years ago, and in my experience, I have not personally witnessed or heard of any Punjabi students being involved in serious criminal activities leading to imprisonment. While I understand that a small minority of students may engage in inappropriate behavior, it is unjust to generalize and stigmatize all Punjabi students based on the actions of a few. Stigmatization of recent migrants by older migrants is very common around the world. They want to be the only ones who enjoy less competition and usually end up monopolizing a specific industry in a country. For example, in Surrey and Brampton, taxi and truck driver and administration work in these industries have been monopolized by Punjabi migrants of the 80s and 90s. Now that they see that young people are unable to find jobs and buy assets like they could in the past, past migrants would like to reduce increasing competition for jobs and resources. Mexicans in America display a very similar disdain and hatred for recent Mexican migrants. Similarly, Chinese in California , Irish in Eastern America and Japanese immigrants in Hawai have also displayed a similar behaviour in the past. I suspect this has something to do with the increasing stigmatization of recent Punjabi migrants.
