Prog metal is more elaborate than symphonic metal, although it also incorporates symphonic as one more color of paint in its pallet. It has lots of time signature changes,complex melodies and rhythms, dissonance, musical virtuosity and lots of experimentation. Dream Theater in particular is not afraid to go "out there" and explore, and is considered a prime example of prog metal. Check out the Wikipedia definition here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_metal As for Dream Theater's concerts, I've been to a few - like 7 or 8. They have two basic formats: the "An Evening With..." format, where they have no backup bands and their set lasts anywhere from 3 to almost 4 hours (sometimes even with an intermission), and the "festival" format, with much shorter sets (maybe an hour and a half or so). For their upcoming tour it's going to be the "An Evening With..." format, so we'll be enjoying them for at least 3 solid hours of majestic greatness.
@scifimonkey3Ай бұрын
Both Prog metal and Symphonic metal are both progressive in the sense of developing themes and transitions between different melodies and time signatures and both are often written in a ‘classical’ manner but symphonic metal/rock actually includes significant orchestral parts with orchestral instruments whereas Prog metal utilises the rock based instruments and relies on synths to produce any elements close to orchestral in sound. That is the primary difference between bands like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and Opeth as opposed to Nightwish or Epica. As for the concerts they are often 3hours long so there is plenty of space for at least 2 or 3 of the longer tracks.
@jhawkkw87Ай бұрын
It will definitely be at least 3 hours based on the tweet Mike Portnoy sent out today about the London venue's curfew forcing Dream Theater to start the show earlier than originally planned in order to fit their entire setlist in.

As you inquired... (and I'm no expert, obviously) "Progressive" means that the song structures are free-form, i.e., they may be whatever the artist composer wants or needs them to be without any formulaic restrictions. "Symphonic" means that traditional orchestra instruments (whether synthesized or real if the band has a big enough budget) are included as integral parts of the composition. We all know what "rock" means, but what is the distinction between rock and metal? I've heard many different theories on what makes a piece "metal," such as distorted guitars. But the best, most satisfying explanation I've ever read was in a metal ezine a number of years back. The author wrote, "What is metal? Nobody knows, but when you hear it, you KNOW it!" To the depths of your soul I might be so bold as to add!
@gregorykenfield3134Ай бұрын
Symphonic metal, as the name implies, is metal that includes elements of classical symphony instrumentation, and often uses growling vocals as well. Many, if not most symphonic metal bands tend to have female lead vocalists. Progressive (prog) metal is basically music without rules...it includes EVERYTHING, and is limited only by the abilities and imaginations of the artists. Think of Symphonic metal as a sub-genre of prog metal.
@beldin2987Ай бұрын
Back in the 70s we called bands like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Renaissance also either "prog" or "symphonic rock", and in the end symhonic metal these days has a lot of their roots there. Dream Theater has even played a complete "Dark Side of the Moon" cover live and also made some Yes medleys. And here i heared in Johns Solo also a bit of Steve Hackett from Genesis, especially with the volume pedal and that stuff.

One of Dream Theater's biggest influences were Led Zeppelin, a band that used to play 3 hr sets in the 70's w/ no opening band... Rush began to do that format later in their career playing 3 hr sets w/ an intermission. Dream Theater started doing the format of 'An Evening w/ Dream Theater' around 1997 when they would perform 3 hr sets w/ an intermission and no opening bands... in 1999/ 2000, Dream Theater played their entire 1999 album 'Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory' live in concert and additional songs... They released a 3-disc live album in 2001 - "Live scenes from New York" and several more live records since then... They would also do tours w/ shorter sets w/ opening bands (Dream Theater's 2011 tour was 2 hrs and had an opening band) ... and their 2023 tour w/ opening acts Devin Townsend ...and Animals As Leaders...

7:34 The main difference, I think, is that symphonic metal, as the name implies, is characterized by the use of a symphony orchestra, whereas prog metal usually relies only on a keyboard player or may even not have one in line-up. Although a prog metal band can play with an orchestra (which Dream Theater did in the past) and a symphonic metal band can create songs without an orchestra, so it's all relative to a certain extent. The same goes for the complexity of the songs: There are progressive bands like Threshold that play much simpler music than Dream Theater and still count as "progressive" and there are some symphonic metal bands like Nightwish or Epica that can create quite "progressive" songs. From the point of view of the artists, I'm sure they don't even think about it. For example, there is the great progressive project Ayreon created by Arjen Lucassen, and he invites the best of the best musicians and singers from both genres to participate in his albums and concerts. If you haven't heard Ayreon yet, then you definitely should.
@pedroteran5885Ай бұрын
There's nothing progressive about Nightwish or Epica.
@SokolRockАй бұрын
@@pedroteran5885 You are probably one of those who consider Dream Theater to be the "standard" of progressive metal, with their extreme complexity and virtuosity, but it's not the case. "Progressive" doesn't mean that musicians should use all kinds of techniques from textbooks. I have already given the example of the British band Threshold - they sound like "pop rock" compared to Dream Theater and nevertheless are considered as prog metal. The music of Nightwish and Epica is sometimes much more sophisticated. I think Nightwish's latest album "Yesterwynde" is generally the most progressive of what they have created before. And my main point is that all that division of metal into subgenres has always been quite relative. Professional musicians themselves usually don't think in such categories.

REd...it's pretty easy,although there IS a bit of crossover in the genmres. But-- sinply put--metal is heavier most times--especially the guitars. There are alot of dT style bands around. Not so much prog 'rock' bands, but there are a few. If you want to hear the top tier of prog rock of the past 30 years, you need to investigate Neal Morse and his many projects. Starting with Spock's Beard back in the mid 90's, he was the main songwriter on their first 6 albums. He then formed Transatlantic ( a supergroup) with DT drummer Mike Portnoy. Along the way,he went solo and has produced many prog rock albums with Portnoy in tow. He also has albums with Mike in Flying Colors ( another prog supergroup),and his own Neal Morse Band. I think you'd be thoroughly amazed by this music,and there is tons of it. The only way to describe it is a huge mix of Genesis, Rush, Kansas, Beatles, ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant all tossed in one beautiful blender. Maybe try 'The Call' by Neal Morse Band and go from there(?). Dive in....T

Also, the diffrence between Prog metal and Symphonic metal is pretty big. Symphonic usually consists of heavy classical music elements, and opera (usually female) singer leads. Prog metal borrows from that as well, but its less of an "orchestra" feel, and more technical with a lot of time signature changes, heavy tone modulation and, at least for me, keeps the song way more interesting by theming it out more.
@sumonjamal1653Ай бұрын
Progressive rock is a broader term for bands that share a complicated array of influences... they wouldn't be considered 'symphonic'. Take Rush for example - their music does not usually emulate classical influences or movie soundtracks... They incorporated varied influences like reggae... jazz... pop... rock... new wave... etc. They could alternate between heavy rock and light rock. The UK band Yes, is credited as one of the original prog rock bands... even though their music was not heavy at all. Yes incorporated time changes and intricate song structures in songs that were often epic in length... similar to what Genesis did in their early career. Even Primus is considered progressive because they are so eclectic musically w/ the bass being their primary instrument and no keyboards ... Rush was a huge influence on them. Of course, we also got King Crimson... Kansas ... Fates Warning ... Porcupine Tree... Opeth... etc. Very different progressive bands musically speaking. Symphonic rock/ metal is the genre that largely associates w/ classical and orchestral influences... and is narrower by musical definition. The delivery from the bands r usually epic and grand-sounding in nature w/ hints of subtle songs... They come off like a movie soundtrack or a classical orchestra performance w/ heavy guitars and high or operatic vocals. We can count bands like Nightwish... Epica... Rhapsody of Fire (originally Rhapsody)... Tobias Sammet's Avantasia ... Within Temptation... etc. as part of the Symphonic genre.

Progessive Metal is what you are seeing here.. Symphonic Rock brings in Symphonic instruments in the background.. an example: YES did an album called "Magnification" that is symphonic rock, behind the band they had a small symphony orchestra in the back that played with the progressive rock up front.. that blend is "Symphonic Rock" Metallica did that... and many other metal bands.. Dream Theater did a Symphonic Rock album in 2002 : Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, with a symphonic orchestra backing them up.. Another Band called "Aryeon" is real symponic rock, they use choirs, and operatic singers in the music.. this is very 'story' oriented music, like an opera, but rock/metal. In fact, James LaBrie of Dream Theater performed a vocal part in Ayreon's master piece "Human Equasion" as one of 7 different opera singers.. Oh, James trained in Operatic voice.

Symphonic music is just symphonic music with little else, Prog rock or Prog metal takes on more diverse influences more odd time signatures and other generes like jazz, folk, classical music not following the typical song structures with more changes. Mike Portnoy said we can take our music to Yes to Metallica in the same song or U2 to Pantera in the same song.

20:35 Its really astounding who his electric guitar here absolutly sounds as if it were an accoustic. I think i heared the same once on a Rush video, but not really sure about that anymore. Else for the guitar solo before, i knew they alredy did covers from Pink Floyd and Yes, and here it sounded a bit if this was more of a tribute to Steve Hackett from Genesis. At least it shows John really seems to be a fan of all those great prog / symphonic rock bands from the 70s.
@falsemcnuggethopeАй бұрын
He has a piezo pickup built in to the bridge. Many acoustic guitars have one as well because of how similar it sounds to an acoustic guitar.
@beldin2987Ай бұрын
@@falsemcnuggethope Ah ok, thanks. I think thats what my Ovation accoustic also has 🤔
@calibadgerdude6082Ай бұрын
Technically, all acoustic guitars that are “electric” have piezo pickups. Electric guitars use magnetic induction to detect the vibration of the strings and convert that to sound, but most accoustic strings are non-ferrous and so an electro-magnetic pickup would do nothing for them. Piezo pickups use tiny shards of quartz crystal to detect physical vibrations and convert them to electricity and thus to sound. Some electric guitars (like Petrucci’s here) have an additional piezo pickup installed in the bridge saddle that basically functions exactly like an accoustic pickup, so what you’re hearing is the physical vibration of the strings rather than the electronic interference they generate. It doesn’t sound exactly like an accoustic because there’s no hollow body resonance being detected by the pickup, but it’s close enough that with a little post-processing effects you can make it sound pretty darn close. ETA: I should say “most” accoustic pickups, rather than all. Some accoustic guitars make use of microphones rather than piezo pickups.
@calibadgerdude6082Ай бұрын
Difference between symphonic metal and progressive rock/metal, hmmm. Technically, one could include symphonic within the “progressive” genre and some “progressive” bands make use of symphonic or orchestral elements in their compositions without falling into the “symphonic” categorization. There’s actually a lot of bleed-through in the two genres. Progressive basically just means they make use of atypical or unusual elements in their music and deviate from what would be considered “standard” music theory. It is characterized by odd time signatures and/or poly rhythms, unusual chords and chord progressions (often stemming from Jazz or world/ethnic music), deviation from “standard” musical scales and motifs, and complex song structure that lends itself towards lengthy compositions. Symphonic has a lot of those elements as well, but tends to draw it’s deviations from the past (classical) rather than the avant-garde (future) To put it another way, symphonic pays tribute to the genius of music history and progressive strives to forge new paths. Hope that helps. XD

So symphonic metal is kind of a more specific thing, whereas prog has the propencity to lend and blend things from other genres. Like symphonic, classical, jazz or whatever really. The interesting part is what does the band DO with this property. Prog rock was more like a movement in the 70's. This is progressive metal, which kind of builds on those traditions of prog rock. I just call it all 'prog' to avoid getting too specific.

Symphonic metal is based on the sound and the power of a symphony, and how it complements and matches the power of metal. Progressive rock CAN have metal and/or symphonic elements, but isn't defined by them - progressive rock can use all kinds of motifs, ensemble identities, and sound and influences, and is not always tied to any one source. Which is why Dream Theater, TOOL, and Rush are all progressive music acts, but can sound absolutely NOTHING alike - it's more in the musicianship and creativity than any particular sound or style.

The Count of Tuscany has the greatest intro Dream Theater has ever done on any song. From the time Labrie starts singing and onwards the song falls flat in my opinion. There is something worng with the song, being the cheesy lyrics, the boring middle part or the uninspired ending. A Nightmare to Remember is a better song than this. Its more exciting, it sounds like classic DT, and more surprises on it. Cant take away from that amazing intro, I just wish the rest of the song was as mind blowing.

But there is an alternative: A video of a concert in Chile from 2005, which they released themselves as part of the "Official Bootlegs" series and there they performed "Octavarium" (but without an orchestra). It has quite good quality and I think none of the songs from that concert are supposed to be blocked, including "Octavarium" because that DVD was released directly by the band, bypassing their label. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2mUdHt5d8iqp9Usi=vgn3yOixVxXbtQ4h
