The way they reframed that story was pretty amazing. I love both versions for entirely different reasons. This version's video is heart wrenching and heartbreaking.

I think people who never been exposed to a lot of heavy metal hear "Metallica" and they think loud, heavy, angry, screaming music and vocals. They don't realize they are, in fact, incredible musicians, songwriters, and basically masters of their craft. This song is a cover, but they were able to take someone else's words and music and give it a different take with their music video than the original. I would love to see you check out more of their work and really listen to the lyrics of their music.

The video has nothing to do with the original lyrics but holy crap that is a heartbreaking story they told. And the woman in the video was famous 80's porn actress Ginger Lynn.

The fact that they remolded the song into that story is really well done. Lyrics can be subjective, so saying the video has 'nothing to do with the lyrics' isn't true anymore.

This video is obviously loaded with metaphor. The mom is obviously Metallica. Being on the road. Sleeping in dingy motels. Performing for crowds of rowdy drunks. Selling themselves for whatever they can just to make it. A gritty way of living. And the child? She represents Metallica's music. Just as the mom lives and works for the sake of her little girl, so too does Metallica live and work for the sake of their music.

One thing that drew me to Metallica a long time ago was their ability to share their anger through their music about situations that should never be. War, abuse and violence brings their anger out as well as mine. These things should never be but because they do I am angry.

Hate to say it, but keys as a self defense weapon are useless. If you live in the USA in a state that allows you to carry a pistol get a purse gun. If you are in Canada or Europe well... any item you plan to use to injure someone is an illegal weapon and you will be punished harsher by the state than the person that attacked you.

Metallica's first four albums were awesome. The next album, the Black Album, is where I gave up with them mainly because of a Bob Seger tribute song. I switched over to Pantera in this point in my life. THEY got that punch that Metallica seemed to have drifted from in this time. Both bands are touring still, in 2024, amazing.

@@Ilikeryche Truth. I grew up listening to nothing but classical music because of my dad, all good. For me after that it was the Monkees, the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Rush. Then the 1980's metal took over. Slayer. Metallica's last two albums were incredible in my opinion. They do not sound 'old' at all. I still play the violin. Check out the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner playing Scheherazade. Pure raw emotion.

A surprising thing is that Metallica does a lot of covers. They don't usually cover well known artists like Bob Seger (although they have several Motorhead covers)but i think this song hit a chord with them and they love re-interpreting songs. I'm also a Seger fan and i think Metallica did the song justice...so much so that i have the 2 versions on par. A heartbreaking video but Metallica added unmistakable aggression which adds to the tale they are telling.

I feel that the video is relatable to a rock group's life. They do their thing on the stage, they crash into a motel room, they're judged for their looks, they endure what needs to be endured for that legal tender, lay awake at night wondering what it's all for, if it's worth what it's doing to them and their loved ones, but they have to keep plugging away at it cause it's all they know. For me, what this video is trying to point out is that even a stripper and sex worker deserves empathy and respect.
