When we feel control is beyond our grasp, we get scared which in turn makes us angry. As a caregiver for my parents I became angry when each one passed. I did what I could but couldn't control death. I still wonder if I could have done more and the anger returns. I'm now at a place where I accept that I tried my best to do all in my power over those fourteen years. But you can tell this was written when those emotions were still raw.

Another RUSH chick here. I was 16 when Caress Of Steel was released and I heard the Fountain Of Lamneth and I was hooked. I am now 66 and I still listen to them EVERYDAY. My husband and I went to almost 30 RUSH shows together throughout the years. I can’t imagine being married to a man that doesn’t love RUSH as much as I do. We’re a perfect fit and have been married for over 36 years!!!! RUSH CHICKS ROCK!!!! 🤘🎶💜😊

Yes, Robbie Whelan, whom Neil wrote this song about, wasn't just a sound engineer who worked closely with them on Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals; he was also a close friend to all three band members, who taught Neil how to cross-country ski, and the two of them would often ski to work in the studio together. Whenever Neil did lyrical breakdowns of GUP in interviews, he'd often skip it because the memories of Robbie's sudden passing in a car accident were too raw and too painful, but here's what Alex had to say about him: "This guy was so together, it was amazing. He really knew everything that was going on there; he was a wonderful person who loved life to the fullest." I have always appreciated how accurately Geddys voice reflected the feelings that Neil was struggling to express in his lyrics, and here, he perfectly captured the shock and anger of suddenly losing such a close friend and colleague. Have a beautiful evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

I would say that this song would very accurately depict the angry stage of the grieving process. Awesome analysis!! Alex's chrodal soloing, I feel, is greatly overlooked. One of the things that makes him the underrated guitar virtuoso that he is.

When I became a Rush fan, as a teenager in the 80s, the biggest thing that people stated as to why they didn't like Rush was Geddy's voice. It's amazing to me that years later people are actually saying that they like his voice. To me it's a testament to how good they really are. People are now realizing that Rush was something special.

Great reaction my lady! This was the very song that came to mind on hearing of Neil's passing. That first line is what was written in the liner notes of their Different Stages Live release in tribute to Neil's wife and daughter's passing - there is sadness & heartache attached to this track...but it's such great piece - it absolutely rocks! RIP Robbie Whelan (for whom this was written), Neil, Jackie & Selena... "Suddenly you were gone...of all the lives you left your mark upon..."

I know this is a heavy song but...these old videos always make me chuckle just a little because this was such a transitionary time for the band. They were transitioning from the kids they were in the 70's to the successful adult musicians of the 80's. They were also still struggling with the new video era and the choices that medium forced on artists. Neil was still super fit because this was the heart of his bicycling days. He had cut his hair and trimmed the mustache. He looks so clean cut in this era. Alex was sporting the Flock of Seagulls hair style. I don't think I need to say any more about that. Geddy had the nicely feathered hair that we 80's kids all strived for. He was also so, so very earnest in the videos from this period. All the band was. This was before they kind of said, "This video crap isn't our bag. Let's just be ourselves instead of what this annoying director is telling us to do". That's obviously not a direct quote but I think it captures the thoughts of the guys when they looked back at this time.

The sounds on this album were a real departure for Rush. Some fans list it as one of their least favorites, but I put it towards the top. Alex especially was experimenting with fantastic new textures, and doing solos that were based around chords as much as single lines. Wonderful stuff on every level here.

I love your authenticity and encourage you to not try to suppress genuine feelings! Obviously this song triggered something within you that had been waiting to come to the surface, and the way to let that go is through crying. This process also is called 'Purging', and I've been doing a ton of it myself, since my Spiritual Awakening nine years ago. The latest time only this morning, and fittingly, when I had to think of a good friend who'd passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the end of last year. Greetings from San Diego's resident Rushoholic. "Afterimage" is from the 10th Rush studio album GRACE UNDER PRESSURE from 1984 which contains songs with sad and dark tones. GUP is the first album after Rush parted company with Terry Brown who was their co producer from rhe beginning. Thus, what we have here is the start of another of the numerous phases of their career. Neil looked at the finish the way he usually did when the lights and camera stayed on him. He also may have helped Marlborough's bottom line since he smoked up to a point then quit for years and then was sneaking cigarettes toward the end of his life. I'll take this opportunity to send a shout out to the producer of the video. The insert cuts of the Victorian Era scenes were filmed separately. I have counted 5 cameras given the number of cuts on the band running the song through. One is just filming Neil from the left and that camera is also slightly behind him on that side in a separate cut. There must have been 3 separate camera dollies on a semicircular track wrapping around the front ofAlex and Geddy. That track may have displaced Geddy's keyboards. Did you notice how you never saw those keys and bass pedals that are so much a part of the sound in this song? His bass guitar isn't a part and it wasn't slung over his shoulder. I hope he wasn't pantpmiming the keys! There was a dolly cam on him and 2 on Alex for his solo. The 3rd dolly cam must've been on an elevating platform and craned down on Neil from above. It's a great shot that comes as Geddy finishes the 2nd chorus and "Afterimage" goes into a short breakdown. And, of course, there's that single extended cut going from the start and that camera tracks the guys one at a time while pushing in and pulling away and simultaneously changing focus and panning. Notice how the shot doesn't cut until Geddy almost finishes the 1st chorus with the camera pushed close to his face. On an unrelated note, back when Rush were touring in support of GUP I was visiting family in New York City and happened to be walking past Radio City Music Hall one day when their tour was setting up for their show that night, but the marquis also told me the show was sold out. Anyway, I had to keep going out of Manhattan and get back to Queens. Okay, Red. I've typed enough. Stay classy...

Whew... definitely one that has that extra meaning since the loss of The Professor - "Suddenly - You were gone, From all the lives You left your mark upon". That opening set of lyrics always takes me back to the day we heard about the loss of Neil and the shock... not seeing it coming at all and how long it came to terms with the loss. The wonderful Rush podcast family I found during the covid period with the "Something for Nothing" podcast guys and guests and how it let me know it wasn't just me taking the loss so hard and having to work through it.

And regarding this song: No, not a _really_ old one but from '84. And it actually was the second Rush song I'd ever heard! 😀 Together with the rest of the 'Grace Under Pressure' album, in '89 and on which it is song #2. And already its opener, 'Distant Early Warning', had me hooked on them. And also for life, as it would turn out 😊 And in _my_ opinion, Geddy's voice had been at its absolute peak on this album and the one that followed ('Power Windows') 😍 I've never been massively keen on young Geddy's ultra-high vocals, to be honest 😅

When you stopped to look at Neil, you could probably see why Geddy and Alex called him the professor. It had nothing to do with his literacy or intelligence, but was a reference to how much he looked like the professor on the old TV show Gilligan's Island. This is the era where Neil shaved his moustache and got a haircut (except for the little ponytail), and the nickname totally makes sense.

It wasn't a little bit angry. It was a lotta bit angry. Of course, anger is a very big part of losing someone and it's written all over Neil's face and in his words. He doesn't sugar coat anything. He's angry. Very angry. We've all felt this way. Reminds me of The Pass when he spent a verse telling us what we don't want to hear (again, no sugar coating)... No hero in your tragedy No daring in your escape No salutes for your surrender Nothing noble in your fate Neil was a master at writing what others are afraid to write about. It's important so that we don't feel alone in our thoughts.

There is a reason why Rush is such a "cult", loved band. Especially for men (yes, we love women that love them too!) Us men are not supposed to show feelings but Rush was always a soundtrack to life, everyones life. They let us know we were ok, and not weird. They were about issues we all went and are going through and let us know we were not alone. They were about relatable stuff that would give you a chill, a feeling that they were talking directly to you. A good writer does not write to the world, that writer writes to one person and by doing that, they can open up fully and honestly. To the reader or listeners, it is personal. I never knew that some of the best writers, would write to their sister, or their parents, or their best friend, telling them a story, a sorrow or a feeling. Neil got that, he may have not been writing it to you, but as a human, you relate immediately to him. And their playing adds so much to that, it is feeling, it is heart, and is totally relatable.

I've said this before, Neil said that his approch to songwriting was to make personal things feel universal and to make universal things feel personal. There's not a Neil Peart Rush song that didn't have those qualities. He should be granted Poet Laureate status
