I'm 54, been in the RUSH family since I was 9. I've seen them 40 times, including the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame induction, met them 4 times. I proud that my identity to people is the RUSH guy. All of us in the RUSH family now hold on by watching all the new people reacting to RUSH for the first time. We get to see how we first felt. Their will NEVER be a band like them ever again. 3 best friends who are rated best at their instruments making unbelievable music with class and humbleness. Keep on the RUSH journey. Thank you Dirk, Lerxst and Pratt, we miss you and love you.

The Counterparts album was a glorious return to form for Rush. They returned to more of a guitar/bass/drums power trio on this album. Animate is the album opener. But you really should check out the next song, Stick It Out. That one really kicks ass. I still remember the elation I felt when listening to this album for the first time. And if I remember right, this tour was the last time they toured with an opening band. After that it was always a three hour evening with Rush show. Such amazing memories!

Neil Peart did say in the Rush documentary 'Beyond the lighted stage'... that 'Animate' was one of his favorite Rush songs to perform. From the 'Counterparts' album in 1993... it was never a single (Those would be 'Stick it out'... and "Nobody's hero") but 'Animate' became a fan fave and Rush performed it live numerous times on their tours.

Alex is truly underrated. So many times he and Geddy flip the traditional roles of guitar and bass. Alex drives such a groovy path letting Geddy play on top. Then, under the spotlight, delivers such a thoughtful and beautiful dance.

Here, Red, comes the first greeting of '25 from San Diego's resident Rushoholic. Neil's countdown at the start of "Animate" is one among the handful of his vocal appearances throughout Rush's studio catalog. This is the opening track on studio album # 15/20 called COUNERPARTS released in October 1993. Neil's lyrical inspiration comes from the concept of the "aniima" introduced by the German philosopher whose name happes to escape me just now. It has to do with women having a masculine personality side and men having a feminine personality side. COUNTERPARTS marked a return of Alex's guitar to the forefront. The album is "all killer and no filler". Maybe that's because nobody slaved over their drum parts the way Neil did. At some point I'll have to take you up on that "What's App" offer from the Dave picture. Both of you stay classy...

One of my favorite Neil grooves. The beginning was inspired was early Motown grooves. Geddy ranks this song as one of his favorites as do I. It didn't always make the setlist, but when it did, it was always a highlight. I also believe that pound for pound, this album is their finest sounding. The drums have a real distinction and bite to them and the band had officially reverted back to being a three piece (for the most part) scaling back from a lot of the synths that the '80's. And going back to the beginning actually made them sound fresh again. But this song? A f*cking triumph!!!

This is the opener of their 'Counterparts' album, which bookends my favourite series of Rush albums, starting with 'Permanent Waves' (which 'Different Strings' is on), and I can't believe it's already more than 31 years old! 🤯 😅 'Alien Shore' and 'Cut To The Chase' from this album are also great! 🤩👍

I agree. So many Rush fans are stuck in the 70's era, but Permanent waves is when Rush hit their peak in my book. LOve the 80's stuff and much of the 90's.
@mightyV4445 күн бұрын
@carlgibbons5777 - That most likely also is a generational thing, though: Many of those people must've been in their teens during the 70's, which often is the time in our life when music affects us the most. I had discovered Rush in '89 and at the start of my own teens' last year and also via one of their '80s albums ('Grace Under Pressure') and got hooked to them right away; I do also like a lot of their 70's stuff, but I'm sure it would've not had the same effect on me had any of _that_ been my very first Rush listening experience!

Alex's staccato machine gun-like riffs are absolutely brilliant. This is my favorite song on Counterparts and I pretty much love them all. Neil's drums sound so tight too. And Geddy's singing and bass are among his best ever here. The unsung hero is Producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley, who really helped Rush get back to a more three-piece harder rock sound on this album. Cold Fire, Stick It Out and Alien Shore are definitely worth a listen too!

Obviously Neil was reading some Carl Jung when he penned these lyrics. Exploring the duality of male/female counterparts in each of us. It took me a while to grasp what Neil was saying here but once I became familiar with Jung’s writing I understood.

I know how much you love Neil's lyrics. So another great song of theirs is off of their Presto album called Chain Lightning and here is the link for the lyrics version because the lyrics are incredible. Below that link I've copied and pasted the story in Neil's own words about how he came up with the song and it's got a really touching part about him and his daughter Selena when she was still a very young kid...many years before she was killed in the car crash when she was 19. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oabUhJ2BnNZmic0si=MbkzEWbm9vTwaKZ7 Neil Peart (from the Rush Profiled! CD): "I'm a weather fanatic - I really love weather, and I watch the weather and look for a good weatherman. And, one night I was watching it, and there are two incidents in that song that are Synchronicity to one weather report, where the weatherman showed a picture of sun dogs, and described them, and they are just two little points of light that appear at sunset, often in the winter when the sky is clear and crystalline, and they are like little prisms, and they sit about ten degrees north and south of the setting sun, and they are just beautiful little diamonds of light, and often times there's a circle of light - one line, that connects them. So they are a really beautiful natural phenomenon, and I love the name too. 'Sun dogs' just has a great sound to it. And in that same weather forecast, the weatherman announced a meteor shower that night, and so my daughter and I went out on the lake in the middle of the night and watched this meteor shower. So the whole idea of the song was response and how people respond to things, and it's a thing I've found a lot in traveling around the world, too. It's not enough just to travel and see things. You have to respond to them - you have to feel them, and a lot of the thrust of that song is how things are transferred, like chain lightning or enthusiasm or energy or love are things that are contagious, and if someone feels them, they are easily transferable to another person, or in the case of watching a meteor shower, it's made more special if there is someone else there. 'Reflected in another pair of eyes' is the idea that it's a wonderful thing already, just you and the meteor shower, but if there's someone else there with you to share it, then it multiplies, you know, it becomes exponentially a bigger experience, so response is a theme that recurs in several of the songs and was one of my probably dominant sub-themes in the writing.
