Every time I hear this song it makes me think of peaking on acid and watching the movie The Wall. I never considered an actual brick in the wall until now!

One block high at a time. How do you effectively get material in the wedges. "Block stacking" i.e. placing more than one block prior to backfilling is not advised.

Nice work. The final shot really showed how steep the hill was. Must of been hard to mow.
@MrRu4eel
@MrRu4eel 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was hard to mow, especially with a push mower. With 2 small kids at home, the sizable yard space was mostly unusable except for sledding. Now, we get good use of a decent portion of the space. Though it was not cheap, it was money well spent.

The use of the gravel behind the interlocking blocks is somewhat like a French drain , buy I didn't see the use of any Deadman pileasters tho stop movement due to future erosion .

Rick, the wall is a gravity wall built to the design specifications by the manufacturer. When a contractor orders block, they have the option of getting manufacturer-provided written engineered drawings of the wall plan taking into account existing conditions, soil quality, wall height and anticipated loads (eg residential vs civic use). That's what was done in this project. The gravity wall system that was engineered was executed to specifications and is holding up really well 5-years later. Redi-rock has a cool engineering tool (that did not exist when we built our wall) but check it out at www.redi-rock.com/retaining-wall-design-charts.htm

I didnt see them filling the voids between the blocks with the drain stone, and I also didnt see them compacting any of the fill at all.... on a wall this small it might be OK, but I predict some "settling" issues behind the wall later down the road when the stone starts finding its way into those voids between the blocks, and when the sand/top soil start settling. But, 3.5 days is quick, and it looks real nice at the end.
@MrRu4eel
@MrRu4eel 6 жыл бұрын
2.5 Years later, we have not seen any settling issues at all and all is holding up fine. The voids between the blocks were filled by pushing stone between the blocks with a bar. It's hard to see on high speed but I can understand your concern.

Is there anyway you could post a picture of what it looks like today in 2020? Also knowing what you know about the process of building this wall, is there anything you would change or do differently if you could start over? thanks, and the wall looks great.
@MrRu4eel
@MrRu4eel 4 жыл бұрын
Sure! photos.app.goo.gl/5w9nrxGb4cFTxakx6 As for what we would have done differently? Not really sure. I would have loved to make the wall even longer to create more flat area but due to our septic system that sits adjacent to the wall, it would not be done. As for the build itself? It would have been easier to put the metal fence at the tip of the wall BEFORE the gravel was installed but besides that, we love it!

Little bit late 🤪 but Looking good. Did you put a kind of fence/protection at the cutoff point so a kid 🧒 does not drop off?
@MrRu4eel
@MrRu4eel 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. I put a 4 ft high fence at the top. It is set with stainless anchors right into holes tapped into the concrete. Its quite sturdy and adequate protection.

Great job, however, I am trying to understand how your math brings you to 90 total sets of stone...I only saw 53 sets. I still believe that to be good 3/day production, just bad reporting for future estimating.

We built one of these ourselves to make more space for a new woodshop. Our blocks were cast from returned concrete at the concrete plant so they are cheaper, but either way it's an awesome way to gain useable space in a hilly area! kzbin.info/www/bejne/anmuZWODdtl_bMk

Hey Chris, It's hard to pick up in the time-lapse but there was compacting done (both hand and with vibration of the blocks to set them in place (first row). Regardless, 5-years in and the wall is holding up nicely with no signs of premature failure, sagging, bulging or erosion. The wall drains well when the rain come pouring down as evidenced from what I see from the drain pipe that was installed. Take a look at the pictures (link below) from early in the project and pictures taken today, 5-years after construction. photos.app.goo.gl/5w9nrxGb4cFTxakx6

I would have liked to but between the increased cost of the wall and the disruption to the septic system that sits at the end of the wall it would have been really difficult. I would have had to relocate much of the septic system.

not a contractor, but i was thinking the same thing! geo liner/textile will let the water through, but keep the soil and stone separated. Wtf did they put plastic along like they did to keep the ground water from migrating toward the french drain they built into the lower part of the wall? makes no sense.
