Teams are not cash poor so its definitely more important to look at the cap hit and the way teams structure new contracts. The trend is to set the base salary low, prorate a signing bonus, and prorate another guaranteed option that they back load to keep the cap number lower. Average salary means nothing to the cap.

A QB salary cap is a really dumb idea. The max contract is a huge mistake in the NBA, it inherently makes the league less competitive and top heavy. If someone like Doncic takes up half the cap, you have to compensate by having lesser players around him. But with the max contract it allows you to load up multiple superstars and have decent role players too. They should let NFL teams figure out for themselves what a mistake it is to pay someone like Tlaw 275 million

The league doesn’t have a problem. They’re paying what they think the position is worth. If you cap the QB pay, the teams with top guys will always win because they have plenty of money to retain and sign other players. It reduces the ability of bad teams to improve because they have less extra cap space to compete with.

The biggest misconception in sports is, drafting a QB number one overall is a winning strategy. In the last 40 years, only 4 QBs taken number one overall have won a Super Bowl. Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Matthew Stafford (who had to leave his original team to win somewhere else). This is irrefutable proof, that this strategy does not work and has NEVER WORKED!!. I dare you to put together a top 10 all-time QB list. Outside of Peyton Manning, I doubt you could give me a few names. The overwhelming number of great QBs are taken later in the draft.
