This presentation will explore the Samad Late Iron Age (SLIA, ca. 300 BCE - 300 CE) in Oman, investigating its role within the broader framework of the late pre-Islamic period in Arabia. Taking a comprehensive approach, starting with a brief review of the literature, the chronological and cultural context of the Samad horizon will be discussed here. Given the ongoing controversies and scholarly debates, the research remains diverse. Thus, the lecture will emphasize significant points of difference and similarity with the preceding Early Iron Age and the contemporaneous PIR (pré-islamique récente, ca. mid-3rd century BCE - mid-3rd century CE), with the latter primarily documented in northern Oman and the UAE, notably at Mleiha, ed-Dur and Dibba. Through a detailed analysis of archaeological findings, the talk will then show challenges and opportunities in dating this intriguing period. With the goal of exposing the archaeological context of the Samad LIA, the presentation promises an engaging and informative experience for experts and enthusiasts of Arabian archaeology and history.
