I *almost* watched this movie in the theater. I started watching it and got about 20 minutes in when suddenly the dragons attacking the city started happening all while everything was upside down. Turns out somebody spliced a reel in not only at the wrong time, but also in the wrong direction. So they had to shut down that screen all day while the projectionist fixed the film and I had to go up to the ticket office to get my money back and figure out what to do with the rest of my day.

The fact that blue-lipped guy takes so much time toying with Marlon's character before killing him smacks of the DM desperately trying to give the party time to rescue him, and eventually resigning to the fact none of them are going to do anything.

Here's your premise, for better or worse: Medieval heroes find a treasure that resembles dice. They drop them at the same time a bunch of kids in modern time find them and roll them (mistaking them for dice) and the two groups become linked. So now you've got the kids/DM playing the game and the heroes (knowingly or not) being forced to act it out. This includes situations where rules arguments at the table are reflected in the medieval world etc etc. That's my premise. Build your movie around it.

@BlazingOwnager
@BlazingOwnager 2 жыл бұрын
@woooudo Yeah, honestly, I am saying that. Peter Jackson and his drive/vision for the project is pretty much the only reason it ended up good. No studio on Earth looks at a flop and learns the right lessons from their mistakes. If anything, it probably nearly killed LOTR in the crib. They usually double down; if a film with certain genre or elements fails, they become skittish towards that genre even if it's obvious that wasn't the issue.
@BlazingOwnager
@BlazingOwnager 2 жыл бұрын
@woooudo Honestly you seem to be the one basing this entirely on feelings. If there's a commentary out there that states this I'd love to hear it, but I've never seen a scrap of evidence that this was in anyway a learning experience for them.
@BlazingOwnager
@BlazingOwnager 2 жыл бұрын
@woooudo You have heard the feelings over facts things and are throwing it around without even understanding what it means. You are stating 'X happened so Y must have happened' on a feeling, then calling it a fact, and anything that disputes your feeling you discount as a fact. Until you have some evidence all you've provided for facts is that you think a certain thing happened based on another thing. PS: Don't attack others as pseudo-intellectual while you aren't even capable of writing a paragraph without several misspellings and wannabe deep ramblings, it makes you look kind of stupid. Scratch that - really, really stupid.

i watched this because i too liked D&D and i was so dissapointed lol. i agree with rich's idea for a D&D movie. it would have to be kind of self aware because in D&D anything can happen and i can see the characters in a situation but need something or want to do something weird and they have to stop and talk to the DM about it in the real world part and we go back to the characters and they're just sitting there waiting while the real players discuss lol. it takes forever for anyone to make their move in a battle. everyone takes like 10-15 min to decide what to do. unless you're smart and while that person is doing that you look up what you wanna do but then you also have to make sure its not what the person who is going is going to do. TLDR: dont make a D&D movie unless you've played it.

I really wish these guys would watch another reviewer's take on films like D&D, like Cecil from GBF, before just tearing into them without any production knowledge. I know it's RLM's schtick to almost unilaterally savage films, but the director actually put a LOT of time and energy into this project and it doesn't look nearly as bad as RLM claims it is given when it was made. And no mention of Tom Baker? Really? Do these guys have ANY nerd credit? Also, there are two sequels, not just one. The third movie is a little tough to source, but it's out there.
@Fardawg
@Fardawg 2 жыл бұрын
"...it doesn't look nearly as bad as RLM claims it is given when it was made." Yes it does look that bad. This came out 7 years after Jurassic Park, a year after TPM, a year before FOTR and looks like garbage. Everyone knew at the time that it looked terrible (I was there). If this garbage script and directing is what the director puts out after putting "a LOT of time and energy" into a project, I can see why he hasn't done much since. You can't blame all of this on production problems. I've seen interviews with him and he was clearly in WAY over his head and had no idea what to do.

Seems your comment was the one coming from a "FAR dimmed memory."
@vitorafmonteiro
@vitorafmonteiro 2 жыл бұрын
Did Mike actually say the tittle I only recalled him blabbering on the "Rankin Bass cartoon" and trying to remember the title while Jay laughed not getting what the hell he meant. I saw the poster of Flight on the video but I took it as the Commentary editor's lucky guess from Mike's recalling ramblings, from what I recalled. I remember Mike trying to recall it properly at first (Mike wasn't getting all details right in his description so I wondered if it was that cartoon), but I'm trying to recall what went down myself. I know it's dimmed memories, I didn't even recall commenting that lol. Memories do that sometimes, so remember never to believe Mandela effects, our memories just work slow or f*ck up fully often. Take care guys. And on Flight of the Dragons being related to D&D, that's a bit of dim connection and more something made up for the film and not in the inspiring book I think, I meant being franchise connected (which it isn't).
