I would recommend brazing with silver brazing rod to fill any gaps instead of compound. In the future when you start zinc plating the cars, you will be able to plate over the silver as well. Also, try a 3 step process for tapping the posts. use a taper then, plug, then bottoming tap. This process is used to make nearly full use of your blind hole (hole that does not go completely through the material).

Bruce McLaren actually built a MK6A with a Ford engine, rather than the usual Chevy. And painted it silver, that sort of silver that has a bit of gray to it. I remember watching it race. Or Oscar Kovalevsky in his Auto World McLaren that was painted Chinese red. I mixed the color to match his car to paint clear slot car bodies when I was cup racing. Mrs Hubble Of The Slot Shop showed it to Pactra and they marketed the color as, " Oscar Red", which I named it. Never got a dime though?

Nice work and very interesting. Do you think it would be difficult to polish certain areas to a high shine and paint around the polish? For example, polish the middle portion of the hood to a high shine and paint the rest.
Too funny with your voice! I enjoyed the segment today 😂😉

A little late, but if the engine covers are in such short supply, have you considered making a silicone mold of the cover and casting replacements in resin.

Watching your resto on this mcclaren , got me thinking I had this car. So l dug into my toybox and found a similar color Lola. With a good hood,no wheels , apparently it wasn't racy enough so I had added a stick on racing stripe. Yeah that hood didn't open enough so I'm surprised the Lola still has it cuz I pulled it open enough to stick open.

A lot of spectraflame paint jobs at mattel back then were prone to mismatching especially the ones with moving parts. Either they were done at different times in production or it's suffering from most hong kong redlines and had below US standard paint finishes...that looks like zamac toning on the front.

You have been very lucky with the zinc plating on the last two models. This car and the beetle both have been amazing condition under the paint! A lot of other restoration videos I have watched the condition of the cars have been next to no zinc plating left, pitting and others issues. I must say this one looks really nice in blue. Was there supposed to be some kind of bumper on the front of this car? Looks like it's missing something🤔Anyway, another great video, looks awesome👍

Practice on cars you don't cars you don't care about, go to the thrift stores and buy up all the cars for 10 cents each, get a decent airbrush $60-100 and use testors metallic paints and you will impress yourself with how easy it is, paint at 25-30PSI and get confidence for the harder more desirable cars.

@pollyg5626 жыл бұрын
i think youll find its not a touch up on the front,on redlines the parts are often made and painted separately,and have different reactions in the metal over 50 years which makes them look like two different paint jobs especially that darkening effect,ive seen that exact same thing literally 100s if not 1000s of times mostly on spectraflame redlines, not such a problem in the 70s with the solid opaque colors
@DiecastResurrection6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I see what you are saying. Because the Zinc on the hood was so dull and grey it looked like brown paint over the orange so it really wasn’t a repaint at all. Makes sense! Thanks!
