Dude you remind me of my childhood, growing up and living at my friends house with his old motor head dad teaching us how to work on cars while he leans against the fender drinking beers and tossing empties in the bed.. farting.. putting starters on a 68 el-Camino.. working on his old mans Ford fairlane, and after the parents went to bed we would keep working on a case of coors quarts in a greasy old barn/garage, with a black and white tv on the bench with country cable (three channels) watching pbs end of day national anthem, pissin in the weeds by the fence, and waking up the next day smelling like gasoline and bad decisions... I can only hope my kids end up with a childhood like mine.. it was awesome! Thanks dude!

When the exhaust rocker or pushrod breaks the cylinder is full of compression so the intake rocker or pushrod will break cause it can't overcome that amount of cylinder pressure.
@SeymourBalz
@SeymourBalz Жыл бұрын
where does the material come from to be compressed ? An intake needs to open to charge the cylinder! Next.... there's leak down/blowby to release the stagnent charge. Next, you've got say 110#'s static valve spring pressure, more at lift. How much is avaliable compression ? 150-175#'s ?? How much greater is that over your on seat pressure alone ?? We know at lift spring pressure rises. Sloppy valve trains/ misalignment causes breakage.
@roostingthe6520
@roostingthe6520 Жыл бұрын
@@SeymourBalz I'm not going to go back and forth cause I just don't argue with guys on the web. This is all I'm going to say, can you think about this for a second please? If the exhaust rocker or pushrod break from either wear, wrong parts, geometry issues, I'm guessing rpm in this case cause it's a 100% stock engine. How many times do you think the intake valve did get "material" into that cylinder before it couldn't open against the amount of cylinder pressure or "material" in that cylinder before it broke?

I wasn't winning any drag races in my dad's old trucks with the 351m's but whatever you hitched one to it would pull it, break the chain, break traction or snap an axle. They had all the torques. If you kept them tuned up they were pretty good on fuel too. I remember he rebuilt the carb on the '77 Crew Cab for a vacation trip down the coast, new oil in the rear, trans and engine, new cap/rotor/wires/plugs and we were getting close to 20 mpg on the highway with it no joke. This is pre ethanol fuel and 55 mph speed limits on the freeway, so temper your reactions a bit with that knowledge pedants. Things I hated about those trucks though: 1. The duraspark ignition modules. Constant problems 2. Starter solenoids and starters, same, constant problems. 3. Voltage regulators, same, constant problems. We kept one of each in the glove box at all times (except the starter, too pricey). After they got a few miles on them we had a few spare fuel filters on hand too. Inside of the tanks all rusted real bad and it would plug up filters right quick. I could change one out on the side of the road in like 3 minutes and be back on the road again. All that said I hauled hundreds of tons of scrap iron, firewood and old junk cars with those rigs. Beasts all of them.

Those are just tough old trucks. When I was a kid we had a 56 Ford long bed. It was in that truck I learned about dump bees, getting stung on the earlobe while my Dad was gone so there was no menthol cigarette tobacco to wet down and put on the sting. In 1974 Dad got a 66 ford with a 352 and 3 on the tree. He kept it till he passed away then it sat in my brother field for over 25 years till we pulled it out last spring and hauled it to my son's house. Now it's getting a new lease on life, and much more care than Dad ever gave it. That old Ford you got should not have made it home, but it did, because it just didn't know any better, Mint.

I have a 1988 f150 4x4 with a 7.3 idi turbo solid front and rear axles and stock rims with bias ply tires and the truck is all military green plus a 5 speed

I had a 302 5spd 4x4 in a 95 extended cab/ long bed. She was as gutless as they come when towing. lol.. But in 4wd LOW, she was all there, and I hopped out of a lot of holes that I had no business getting out of. I pushed that truck to 320k miles and it finally spun a bearing, and I still sold it for $800 with a blown engine. Now I have a 2002 7.3L ZF 6spd, manual 4x4 with manual locking hubs. extended cab/ 9ft flatbed, (srw), dana 60 front, and dana 80 in the rear; basically the same truck, just upgraded Everything.. It's probably the best truck Ford ever made, and I have 330k miles on it and she still pulls strong. Needs some glow plugs and has all the classic leaks. But she's still unstoppable. lol... My pops had an 89 that was virtually the same as my 95. and He has an older 80's, with the 350 windsor-- and I really can't tell the difference; It's just as gutless as the 302. The last and last though. I've always taken my vehicles well passed 300k miles. I had a 97 Isuzu Rodeo 5spd 4x4, with 310k miles, needs a timing belt, I just don't need it-- or I'd already have it done; I'll get to it eventually.

351M/400? Hampered by their smog tune. Putting a straight-up 0º timing chain set in them is the best thing to do. That's what's holding them back is the retarded cam timing. Then when you add a good intake and carb and headers, it will really wake up. Now them Chrysler 400s were pretty stout out of the box.

The knock was your rocker over heating and seizing the valve not allowing air flow the other pushrod couldn’t take the pressure from compression
@btf2842
@btf2842 2 жыл бұрын
Im guessing the compression came from sucking oil past the rings since the intake valve wasnt opening causing a massive negative pressure on the pistons downstroke, and oil doesnt compress too well lol
@danielmaehren882
@danielmaehren882 2 жыл бұрын
All that knocking you heard was your lifters bouncing off the cam lobes because the lifters were hanging up in the bores. Had the same thing happen on my 351w. Wiped 3 lobes on the stock cam.

No. That would make a ticking sound.. The sound in the video was from backfiring into the intake when the exhaust rocker started going away. If the exhaust valve doesn't open fully, as was the case when the rocker got hot and started falling apart, the exhaust will start to back up into the intake and make that sound. Once that same cylinder with the messed up exhaust rocker kicked the intake pushrod out, the sound quit because that cylinder no longer was firing.

Nice burn out at the end and the exam of the pushrods at the end of the video was the best
@davelowets
@davelowets 2 жыл бұрын
The burned exhaust rocker with the weenie stick got hot and failed because the weenie pushrod was solid and it couldn't oil that rocker. The odd sound in the video was exhaust backing up into the intake, because as the exhaust rocker started going away, the exhaust valve was barely opening and the exhaust wasn't fully making it out of the cylinder, so it backs up into the intake when the intake valve opens. The intake pushrod eventually ended up chucked because that valve was trying to open up against the excessive exhaust pressure because the exhaust couldn't make it out of the cylinder due to the exhaust rocker going away and barely opening the exhaust valve. Once the intake pushrod was chucked, the backfiring into the intake stopped, and the noise quit.

I'm always confused on the Fram filter deal I have used them forever on lawnmowers and even my built 460 and 429 used them on every IDI truck I ever had and every vehicle lol I had never had a issue. As for the 351m/400 thing I love those engines very reliable only had one that had any power it was 400 in a 78 f150 I think it was redone at one time. As always peg love your work!!👍👍

That push rod fix reminds of a story my grand father told me of how he used newspaper in some way to hold a set of worn out lifters in place on a ‘48 Pontiac back in the early ‘60s. Also I think the ferd needs some giggle gas to get the necessary horsies.

If you want it to hook, you might want to make sure the front end is up high and on stiff shocks to counter the Cummins weight and send weight to the rear, I'd try removing rear leafs, doing a flip kit, get some stiff DOM tubing, put spherical joints on both ends, attach on end to a cross member and the other to the axle as ladder bars, maybe get some air shocks or load leveling bags so you can air down on the starting line and transfer weight, then air up for the drive between events with stuff back in the bed, maybe put a big fuel tank behind the rear axle to dangle weight back there. Maybe some softer shocks in the back or the adjustable Ranchos if nothing better so you can dial the grip.
