Hot tip if you've also got a 1010 music Bitbox: main outputs from Bluebox/Bitbox/(output module of your choosing). Bitbox FX 1 and 2 outputs back into inputs 1 and 2 of Bluebox for routing audio back in. You now have a whole recording, looping, splicing, polyphonic playing, sub-mixing, granular processing workstation.

This is the device that has made me consider modular. I like the idea of modular and playing around but not having a streamlined way to record and reuse that playing around doesn’t work for the rest of my setup. This solves that problem so well!!

NOTE: Be aware of the power requirement for this unit (850 ma on the 5v). I bought this unit and plugged it into a Tiptop audio Mantis case and it kept cutting out. I reduced the screen brightness to 15% in the tools menu and it’s worked ok so far. Otherwise I’m gonna have to use a 4ms pod.

Can't speak to the eurorack power set up*, but the USB powered original has both a vulnerability to screen burn if left powered up for extended periods and no on/off switch. So I got a USB cable with an inline power switch for convenience / peace of mind. Having opened it up to fit a screen alignment fix, I can also confirm that the TRS connectors on it are at the flimsy end of consumer standard. So the fixed(?) breakout 1/4" connector is a great idea if there's going to be a lot of cable switching. It's still a genius little thing though. *eurorack modules look frighteningly moreish; I don't need another vice right now

You know, hitting double-stop or just two stops over an interval as the cue to end recording, ignoring regular stop, might be a nice feature in a lot of things. It's listening for 252 or the hex equivalent (at least in MIDI) take the second one as the final stop. The first stop gets sent when the sequences stop, you have your tails and ends of envelopes, then hit for the second and all is well.

I ran into the same problem with Bluebox stopping recording. I mostly use my 208hp rig for live performance so it isn't a huge deal. When I'm recording I use a much more caveman solution...I send bluebox midi clock from KeystepPro - so I just unplug the midi in cable from BB before I hit stop. This causes BB delay to become unclocked as the tails ring out - but that actually gives the tails a cool vibe. Would definitely use your solution if I had the space. Cheers and would love an update if you have any new tricks after sitting with BB for a few months. I recently started using keystep pros mod wheel out for a low pass filter on the eq band for one of my percussion voices - something thats super useful but not worth the space in my rack for a dedicated filter. ✌️

Been thinking about swapping my Tascam Model 12 for the Bluebox. Aside from the effort to make that happen, I think it's the right move.
@matthewbarker220511 ай бұрын
I did this earlier this year because I hated lugging the Tascam to gigs. The Bluebox did a great job and the audio quality and flexibility with Eurorack made it really worth it. But, I preferred the work flow, especially for multitracking with the Tascam. I would make the swap again as the benefits for me outweighed the cost. If I had my money again though. I would get the Eurorack version.
@DAMAGR11 ай бұрын
@@matthewbarker2205 Yeah the size of the M12 is the main issue. I don't record straight to it either, so I'm just using it as a regular mixer and sometimes an audio interface. I probably won't get the rack bluebox because I'm not in that world at all, but yeah the standalone is probably gonna happen at this point.

I had to solve this exact MIDI problem to use my OP-1 in a similar way to how you're using the Bluebox. The solution for me was to create a DIY MIDI filter module using a microcontroller--Pam's sends MIDI clock to the recorder, and the recorder sends MIDI start/stop to Pam's. I think your solution is totally fine, but the OP-1 didn't have a stable enough clock for me to use it like you're using the Bluebox. If you (or anyone else) wants to try my solution, let me know and I'll write it up so you can set it up for yourself.

Yeah…my Bitbox Micro constantly restarts (and no, it’s not because of power). Plus, they say it can play playback multisamples polyphonically, but don’t clarify that is only possible via MIDI in any of their documentation or marketing (you have to go to their forum to find this out from other bamboozled users). Which is essentially false advertising. Have not been impressed with 1010’s support for firmware updates to address bugs, so I’m a hard pass on anything they make at this point. Watch BoBeats video on the Tangerine and take the part about firmware to heart - it is important.

you can set up a sidechain in your eurorack with an inverted envelope and offset which will then feed into a VCA
@bdc-muzik5 ай бұрын
Yes I have Kickain and Aikido to side chain from but I find that bussing my kick to a separate channel in (Cubase) allows me to pick a particular compressor from which I can do a little bit of dialing in. The problem with that is that DAWs suck and I want continue to move further away from using one. Having said all of that, this blue box may be worth using my mods for this. Thanks for feedback, man.
@bdc-muzik4 ай бұрын
Update: I picked one up about a month ago. And while I had to buy extra components like compressors and such to handle the kick processing done in Cubase prior to, everything sounds pretty amazing. The compressor on the main bus sounds nice and overall the EQing and reverb/delay fx all together have given me close to the same results sonically as if I routed this all in Cubase. Thank you for making this video. It was a huge influence on my purchase. 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽

Can I plug in an external sound like a Peak to the inputs...is there any weird issue with different volume levels since that is not a eurorack instrument. I have all modular but might get an external synth once in awhile and dont want two different mixers.

For the Clock Sync issue, would a trs or ts cable with a kill switch going from the Clock Out of the bluebox into the clock input of Pams work? Ie, press play on the bluebox to start recording and playing the rack, and then tap the kill switch to kill the rack but keep it recording? Wouldn’t this keep you from having to take up any extra rack space?

if it wasnt for effects, does bluebox need to be synced at all? If i just need it as a mixer and recorder, it shouldn’t even need to be hooked to a clock, right?
@alexdangles785611 ай бұрын
I have been using the stand alone bluebox as my mixer/recorder (not using internal fx) for a few years now and have never clocked it and havent had any issues. It can be a bit of a pain when porting stems into ableton to get everything synced up to the timeline so perhaps that would be an argument for clocking even if you are just recording/mixing. It would be great if it would just accept a normal modular clock source through one of the cv inputs (maybe a possibility through a FW update?)
