Berserker, what is best in life? "To crush your goblins, to see the Orcs driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the Zargon!"

I got to play test the berserker with a group this Saturday, we did run into a problem. When the berserker was left in a stun, he wasn't useful at all. If the Berserker falls down a pit or is hit with tempest, or left in a stun state by poison. They really can't do anything at the start of the around or until the effect is worn off. By that time the party was mostly wiped out. Frenzy did save us a few times and retaliation is way better then I thought it would be in melee combat. But over all, I had fun playing the berserker and look forward to our play time. I might give the treasure hunter a go. But all in all you hit the nail on the head with this character, great coverage with the class.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
That's interesting. Sounds like you ran into the exact problem I mentioned at the end of the video, where the berserker finds himself out of position and paralysed (with venom or spells), rendering him helpless to assist the rest of the team. If he gets swarmed with spawnlings, I can certainly see a major problem for the party.

BROAD SOAD!!!! Anyway, honestly I wish one of the skills had the ability to be reclaimed. That probably is my favorite of the new mechanics since the Haslab launched, that some abilities can be regained in certain situations. I think that keeps heroes from hoarding them until just the "right" situation arrives, only for that to never happen. I'm also still hoping for an expansion with upgrade skills for the original four heroes, but at this point I'm wondering if that's just a pipe dream on my part.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
In terms of upgrades, I think the elf has already been treating fairly with the new elf spells. They are powerful, and you get a lot of choice with them. The barbarian felt like it was always supposed to be a super simple class to play, and I still think it's a lot of fun to play as when you are fully kitted out, including having gone through Frozen Horror. If Wizards of Morcar comes out, the wizard will get new sets of spells to pick from, so that covers that class. It's really only the dwarf who has been left out. Poor thing.

The complete lack of ranged attacks could be a problem for him. I guess by the rules as written he is allowed to use spell scrolls though... which seems a bit odd.
@moonswan758722 сағат бұрын
I really like how the Bezerker came out, the only thing i would add (or subtract) would be that he is not allowed to use a shield. It doesnt seem like the shield would fit him or his moves and also would be an increased motive to get the battle axe, and also it would give the Barbarian a slight edge since he can wield it.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring17 сағат бұрын
I see where you are coming from, but for me, I think the barbarian getting the crossbow and the slightly improved stats already gives him a slight edge, while the berserker's skills already incentivize the use of dropping the shield for a battle axe.
@EriktheRed20234 ай бұрын
The Berserker seems to be suitably on the edge. I'd want to play with some sort of restriction on drinking healing potions as you die, to keep the blood pumping.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
Actually, that would have been a fun restriction - you are the berserker, you don't drink healing potions ever, but other people can give them to you if you're dead! (Of course, it would be disastrous in a game, but it would be funny.) I'm going to be using the new death mechanism from Jungles of Delthrak where the other players have two turns to heal you before you die, and I think I am going to pair that with heroes not being able to drink a potion at the point of death. That seems like a decent compromise.

Dammit... There should be a rule against making a Skill Card a one-off ability. LOL Or at least, allow for only a single one-off "coup de grâce" card akin to Voltron"s "FORM BLAZING SWORD!!" attack. With the Berserker's inability to use ranged weapons, I would allow them to throw the Hand Axe. Daggers are too small for them. If they wish to make a ranged attack, it will cost them. Personally, I would rather have it so that the standard Barbarian and Dwarf heroes to unlock and use the Skill Cards from this set. I see the new figures as interchangeable to their classic counterparts and I have always allowed players to use substitute figures. Great review, as always!

“Taunt” should have been implemented a long time ago… the frozen horror expansion would have been a decent moment to give the barbarian the tank ability he needs to fulfill his meat shield role. I don’t use it anymore cause I adopted the death zones from Advanced Heroquest.

My thoughts on the Berserker: 1) Given that the sculpt has a shield in it, and that the berserker has 1 less hit point and cannot use ranged weapons, I would have hope they would have gotten an ability to use 2 handed weapons with a shield. 2) I would have also given their enrage ability a recharge when restored to full health. 3) I don't think it's a coincidence that the expansion that introduced heroic and story modes is the same one introduced a character whose job is to lose body points.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
Ha. Yes, I wonder if the berserker took too many dirt naps in playtesting. Funny you should mention the two-handed weapon with shield thing, as I mused in another video that it would have been cool if there was a dwarven axe specifically for the dwarf that would work like a battle axe but only required one hand. I thought that would have given him something that none of the other frontline fighters can do (at the moment).
@idristhomas88564 ай бұрын
Hmm... What's the starting line up of choice now? I think if the core characters have got their extra artefacts and bonus items from FH and MOTM I'm still thinking just replacing the dwarf with the Rogue and keeping barbarian, elf and wizard...
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
If the barbarian has his Amulet of the North, it's tough to argue with a character with 10 body points and free use of all the good equipment. I am still inclined to take the knight. No movement penalties, good starting equipment, and bodyguard abilities make him an excellent tank and he can eventually put out the same damage as the barbarian. The rogue is a good swap for the dwarf, but now we have the explorer that also fills that role and I think does it better. If you drop the dwarf, you need to boost the elf's defence, as I think a team should always have two front-line fighters, and normally that would be the barbarian and the dwarf. I wouldn't leave home without the elf. They get all the good stuff from Mage of the Mirror, and they have access to the brilliant elf spells. The wizard is also hard to beat with 9 spells.
@idristhomas88564 ай бұрын
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yes i agree with you to always have two big hitters. Never leave home without a barbarian haha. After motm though, elven chain mail combined with helmet and shield giving the elf 6 defence die, and elven bracers giving her more body points than the berserker, she's now my second tank with spells ha ha. I'm looking forward to your explorer review to see whether it will replace the rogue and put a dwarf back on my team. It'll have to be a solid hero though... I'm a big fan of the rogue's skill set to double hit and sneak past bottle necks. If it's just a bit better at searching I'm not sure I'll be convinced ha ha
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring4 ай бұрын
After Mage of the Mirror, the elf is just a much better pick that the poor old dwarf. He really suffers from never getting his own mission pack to give him a little boost. The rogue is one of my favourite characters, and will be a very useful team member for dealing with spawnlings.

Aren't vikings considered barbarians anyway, based on the historical use of the word? If not I would think they are very similar in many regards, so it probably isn't surprising if people think they have that feel to them.

1 life less, 2 abilities that can only be used if they are quite wounded, and a restriction that prevents them using any ranged weapons. So, it's definitely not just a powered up version of the barbarian.

It's the grip on the axes for me. If they are about to decimate some unfortunate enemy, they should be swinging the axes and should be holding them lower down for leverage. The female berserker is holding her's in a more "prepared and waiting" pose while the male berserker is almost waving it over his head in celebration of a victory.
