I just fixed up a grey patio umbrella I got for free. Someone with more money than me paid $89 for it from Kohl's, and it broke the first time they used it. I repaired a broken rib and sewed up a couple places on the canvas that ripped when it broke. Free was the price I could afford, and I'll make it last for a couple of years.

Righteous instructions (and colorful observations) regarding wooden garden umbrellas, which have become extinct around here (Tucson). As have repairmen. Thank you, RGW. Yrou give me hope. Wish I had a neighbor like yours, for parts.

awe!! i absolutely LOVE his southern charm and refreshing unfiltered commentary!! i also have an “UM-brella” workstation -> supplied with parts from my neighbors old broken wooden patio umbrellas. i tried carpenters glue on the headpiece ( round wooden cracked assembly that holds the umbrella’s arms/ribs ), but i wasn’t pleased with the results. when certain home repairs start to get on my last ass nerve... i walk away and deal with them later. well, today is a perfect day for me to get back on my umbrella repairs THANKS TO YOUR MOTIVATION!! i too HATE being hot and laughed when he smartly steers clear of the sun because of the skin cancer risks! besides skin cancer, the sun also rapidly ages people... so this Southern Charmer is going to continue aging very well!

I pick up curb umbrellas all the time, I prefer using the metal ones but I take off the good canvas and save them to use on a good frame.. those wood finger joints are ALL over, in furniture' RVs, mobile and modular homes.

I call them main spokes and support spokes. And yes, these umbrellas were made to fail and difficult to repair. They use factory-made rivets to fasten the main & support spokes together, so you can't remove and replace them without damaging the wooden spokes. Even worse, the spokes are attached to the pole's two connecting rings with a rubber wire that's threaded through all of them. What a pain! I tried to cannibalize two broken umbrellas to make one good one, but gave up and just ordered new umbrellas.

Man I wish I would have seen your video before I bought the cheap market umbrella by Living Accents. I bought a 9 foot 6 rib umbrella, from Ace Hardware. The day I put it up it had holes in the canopy. I took it back got the replacement in five days. The silver pin thing was missing the secured the poles together. I go get the replacement, put the umbrella up and it blew over in 15 minutes and broke the ribs. I'm done. It lasted 15 minutes.

Great video, and you are a clever diy handy man with an imagination to fix most anything probably for free. That said, If it hasn't already been mentioned the finger joints could probably be strengthened, beefed up, several different ways while they are still in good shape, just a weak spot. Would be a proactive preventive measure, or chore, rather than reactive of dealing with the eventual break. One sure way would be to try would be putting several stainless wood screws through the joint across, 90 degrees to the fingers. Properly drill right size pilot holes for the screws for obvious reasons. or Wrap the joints while still good with braided fishing line and a clear glue exactly like you would replace or tighten an line guide eye of a fishing rod with thread and clear fingernail polish. Or fine copper wire and a dozen or two secure tight wraps with a few drops of solder,, your small electrical circuit working soldering iron would work hot enough. Don't tell your stupid neighbor. He'll start the preventive fix thing on his new ribs and quit breaking and throwing the damn things in the ditch. There goes you umbrella source. ... Good luck. Whatever you come up with, video that for us too.
