Redondo Beach Breakwater, video taped on 1-6-2023 Friday from 6:45am til 12pm.
Large swells generated from a fast forming bomb cyclone storm about 400 miles off the coast of Northern California producing 60-70 mph winds in its 954mb core center radiating out hundreds of miles with torrential rain slamming San Francisco Bay Area with a few wind gusts peaking 101mph when it moved onshore doing a lot of damage to some areas in Central California.
2 to 4 inches of rain was produced in Southern California before the storm center moved generally away and inland to the NE.
By shortly after midnight 1-6-2023 early morning skies cleared in Los Angeles and winds turned light offshore 4-7mph from the NE until about 11:30am that morning, then around noon when I left NW side onshore wind 5-8mph.
Swell peaked about 3am and had a lot of west in it 265-285 degrees in the South Bay. News stations at night time were showing waves going over into the harbor.
Conditions were great by sunrise 6:57am sunny and clear, light offshore wind.
Although surf was a bit unorganized with a high tide peaking about 8am 6.0 making shape not the best for the Breakwater. There were still a lot of very challenging big hero rides available with no takers.
The first surfer paddled out shortly after 9:30am by jumping off the rocks half way into the line up, shown in this video. 10:25
As the tide dropped waves were bouncing off the outside corner Breakwall better forming a resemblance monster peak this place is famous for.
Swell was slowly dropping and hung in there with more back up swells to follow with 2 more storms that came in. 1-13-2023 was another good round with better shape but not as big, and mostly overcast skies.
All in all is was an awesome beautiful day to be in Redondo!
Hard to see but the dolphins were out there surfing and jumping occasionally I was on the low lying beach so it was hard to get a good view most times with a lot of pummeling constant whitewater.

Dolphin stealing the limelight at 7:07 ! Great footage Henry. I went down there around 11 Am in hopes of seeing the large surf I once saw back in the early 90's but was a bit disappointed. I don't think it will ever get that big again unfortunately. It was so big I recall you could fit a small house inside one of the barrels no joke! My uncle told me back in the early 80's when we had El Nino Swells that it made this Mega swell look like child's play! Still was pumping out there all throughout the South Bay. I also checked to see if Cable Cars was rocking but it wasn't.Anyways keep filming nice work!

Hi Reptilian, yes dolphins were out there. I had a hard time getting them because I was so low on the beach. But in a few sections you can see them jump out of the water barely. I was in Huntington on those swells you mention and it took out the pier! My You Tube thumbnail is all I have from 1998 me out at Breakwater. That swell was a little bigger, but super clean long period with no rain from night before. Bummer my 1998 footage got messed up and ruined. A few guys were getting super clean long rides!..

Cable Cars was on and off - at low tide mostly, and hard to read. It hasn't been really good, since they messed it up, by installing "Prattes Reef". It was the best I've seen it in years, but it looked like a lot of work to paddle and stay lined up on. I was feeling the session I'd just had at the Breakwater. After I started writing, I realized that you were probably talking about the "Cable Cars" spot in Hermosa... I was referring to El Segundo.

Huntington Beach Cliffs has a Cable Cars also. Some people call it Box Cars or ? It’s a far outside peak, needs big swell also and low tide is great. But I think it’s not the same anymore either from way back because of the newer Bolsa Chica outlet. I think too much sand comes out of there or builds up to the south, north of Cable Cars peak and filled it in. That makes it break to far outside on that whole stretch Seapoint where I used to paddle out, and wall off the peak. From what I hear Redondo Breakwater is not quite as good anymore after more rocks were put in place to beef up the harbor wall? That’s me at Redondo 1997 in my thumbnail picture. That day was super clean and awesome! Bummer SVHS tape got ruined and I barely got that snapshot of me from it..

@@henryssurfshowcase Yeah... If you ever wondered what became of the "Red Line" Cable Cars that used to run all over the greater LA area, prior to the rise of car culture... That's where they went. They were killed by the collusion of BigTire, and BigDetroit - and dumped offshore, in a few key locations. I started riding Redondo in the mid-90's... On a lark... I'd heard for years about this Big Wave spot, and that there was even a slight "wedge" effect... And one time while traveling back North, while I was going to College in San Diego - I knew there was some swell, so I decided to peel off the 405 and check it out. I was pretty much sold, from then, on. I think it needs a good sand bar, and deep water in all the right places... And it prefers lower tides. This Winter, there was a huge berm set-up after the Summer (I heard). So they pushed it out a bit with Tractors. And on this day - it still wasn't really 100% right. Which accounts for why it was so sketchy getting in, down off the wall. It was as deadly a water entry, as I've ever seen out there. And the sets were a little inconsistent - but BOMBING when they came. I got a decent one on my Kneeboard, from deep in the cornice...and then I got DRILLED - when it closed out. And I mostly just got repeatedly flogged, after that. I was a little out of shape, from a long semi-flat spell. And some days and some sessions - are just gonna be 'shocker(s)' like that. The next day, and/or the day after, I got some good waves at $hitPipe. And on the 11th, I got a much better session at Venice Breakwater... But it was like a third of the size. Still, it was super fun. And then I checked Redondo again on Friday the 13th... It was way smaller than this day... The angle was too North. I had thought about heading to Seal Cloudbreak, for my afternoon session. But the 405 South was a mess. So I ditched that, and checked the Breakwall - but it was uninspiring. So I wasted the afternoon checking some secrets on the Hill, all of which were breaking, but either crowded as F (Hags), or funky with wind. So I got up on the 14th and got a session at Seal... But the direction had re-oriented, a bit more West - so from the shorebreak to the Pier, was the spot. It was worth the trip. I was still a little bummed that I had missed the Cloudbreak session, but glad to get some frothy, sandy tubes.

I would think so? At end of video 1:09:10 I briefly talked to him. He said he slipped a little on the moss and almost bit it! The rocks are very slippery also, on top of a wave coming over and taking you out..
