So, apparently Mercedes put out a bulletin regarding the 104.98 engines. It warned not to fill your oil to more than the half-way mark on the dipstick. It was to address the head gaskets going prematurely in these cars. I'm the second owner of a 1992 300Sl with 86,000 miles on it, and the head gasket went completely a year ago. Anyone hear about this bulletin? I've owned a non DOHC version of the M104 with a head gasket that didn't go until 236,000 miles, filling the oil to max (once a week for the last three years I had it lol).

I'd heard of the TSB and I think had my hands on the PDF at one point, but can't verify. You should be able to contact a local dealership and if they're friendly may give you a copy so you can read exactly what's up with that. I don't see it making an enormous difference in the headgasket failing, the point at which they are breached by oil leaks is inherently weak mechanically, and is far above the oil sump. Oil pressure shouldn't be increased enough by that small amount of extra oil to make the difference, but that said, I've not seen the flow paths throughout the engine either. Thanks for watching!

obviously the s320 engine is slightly different from the 300se...air cleaner in situ on the 300se etc....thanks for great videos

How often you need to change synthetic oil in S320 1999?

I change it every 5000 miles, and do it more frequently in cars that are driven in harsh environments (desert, for example). Thanks for watching!

May I ask you one moire question : error code 305 Mercedes S320 I did change ingnition coils. 1 oxygen censor, sparks and cables for 2 month was no red light and no is back. When I excelerate is burning more gas. One I am goig 50-80 miles works fine. Every new week shows error code another code

@@POLISHAMERICANLEGIONS Has the wiring harness been changed from the "biodegradable" stuff Mercedes used until around 1996? If not, it could be wiring falling apart and failing.

@@redonKiLaus This is Mercedes S320 year 1999 120k miles I did replace wires for all set for sparkplugs.

@@POLISHAMERICANLEGIONS The wiring I'm referring to is the harness that connects to the coil packs, but if you have a 1999 model then you shouldn't see any issue with that wiring. Is the engine consuming any oil, and have you completed a compression test and/or scoped the cylinder with a borescope?

Hello, these same directions would apply for a w140 S500wouldn't they? And do you feel its better to drain the with t he pump oppose to getting under the car and taking unscrewing the oil plug?

Johnathan Dugger The same general process is followed, but oil capacities and fill/drain/filter locations differ between the I6 and V8 engines. As far as using an oil extractor is concerned, I feel that it is better to use that method for regular oil changes to avoid wear on the drain plug, and that is how most dealerships perform oil changes now as well. That said, it is a good idea to do a full drain out of the drain plug every few oil changes to remove and sediment or wear debris from the bottom of the pan, as an extractor cannot get 100% of the oil out. You obviously need to use a MD recommended oil spec, but I have see no MB documentation that says you "must" use Fully Synthetic oil which wasn't a thing back when this engine was designed. Personally I use Castrol 10-40 semi synthetic in mine as Castrol say it meets MB spec for this engine, its reasonably priced and easy to buy here in the UK. Must try and get one of these oil pumps, a lot quicker than jacking the car and having to drop the sump guard !

Correct per the old manuals, current MB docs that supersede (at least in the US) do reference 0W-40 full synthetic. Either is realistically fine. The extractors are excellent. Thanks for watching!

i watched with appreciation the changing of the belt tensioner and associated bits on your 300sl. i did the same on my w140 300se and your vid was so much help... can you tell me if you have removed the smog pump or just the pulley from a similar car? i intend to probably bypass the pump pulley with a smaller belt but am wondering if you know the size of the belt required.??? if not i will just have to put a piece of string around the remaining pulleys in the proper sequence and see. thanks for great info..greg.

I've not bypassed the smog pump on one of these vehicles, nor have I removed the pulley. I'd assume the pulley can be removed with the appropriate puller, but not sure about the implications of removing the pump as far as deleting or blocking off other ports. Thanks for watching!

Strange way to change oil i think. Do you really get all old oil out? Must be easyer to drain by the plug...or?

Depends on how much work you are willing to do to keep it up, things do break and they require repair and these can quickly fall into disrepair if you're not willing to keep up with maintenance. Thanks for watching!

I recently made A mistake and put a synthetic mobil 1 0W 40 oil on my m104 engine . Engine started to leak oil after few hours, right under the head gasket . So I had to drain the oil and put back castrol gtx. Just like I said before, its a bad idea to ti use synthetic oils anywhere in old clunkers, it cleans all the residues with are acting lke a gasket itself.

Synthetic oil doesn't clean out residue, but can seep through perished seals (underlying issues) due to the molecule chain structure of synthetic vs. conventional oils. The fact that the synthetic oil leaked out of your M104 shows that there is a seal issue that conventional oil is/has been masking. At some point, one of those seals may blow out/fail catastrophically, or could simply leak increasingly profusely, potentially causing engine failure due to oil loss, an engine fire, etc. If you have a leak under the circumstances that you did, it is best to perform a full engine reseal, particularly with the leak location you describe. The head gasket design of the M104 is (unfortunately) inherently weak and known to leak, requiring head removal and replacement of the gasket. There are several other common leak points that are much more easily addressed - valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, etc. - as well as others that are more difficult to fix like the front timing cover, rear main seal, and the aforementioned headgasket.
