When working out the pluses and minuses how do you know which number to subtract from the other? In other words how do you work out whether its plus or minus?

+Sophie Potter Great question! It usually 'makes sense' which you subtract from which - in this example we wanted to see the change AFTER holiday so that's why it went that way around. In reality, it doesn't really matter as long as you use the lower number as your S. In this example had we done this the other way around there would have been 10 minuses and 3 pluses and so our S would still = 3. When it comes to interpreting, you need to look at the data and the hypothesis to see what it is showing.

does the type of hypothesis used actually matter (i used to think you could only use null hypothesis for this)

Hi Richard, just enjoying your worked example video (loving the comments from your students 'of course you would be happier after a holiday' - kind of missing the point that psychology needs to scientifically show that this is the case (or not the case.) Anyway, I struggle with the Sign Test in terms of why we use it. If it's just used on repeated data (so repeated measures design) why don't we use a Wilcoxen Test? The data for the happiness study is ordinal (ranked data about how happy they are) and it's a test of difference, so why would we use the Sign Test over a Wilcoxen? I initially thought it was because the data was nominal, but that's the not the case in this study or the Zener Cards study that I used with my students to test telepathy. Any thoughts? Thanks and thanks for your videos as always :-)
