I have been a Volvo tech for around 25yeaars, repairing and servicing mostly V70mk1-3 (V70mk3=estate S80mk2), S60. S80 and XC90. Done like hundreds of belts and repairs on all engines on these cars. The s80 is actually the same car as same era Mondeo, S-max, Galaxy, Landrover Freelander3. These all shared some of the engines and gearboxes. The S80mk3 was available with: 2,0 (Ford/Mazda) engine with or without flexfuel, well established engine. 1,6D and 2,0D PSA/Ford engines, VERY established engines, used in MANY makes and models. This is just to show that A LOT of work has gone into these engines! Then the 5cyl diesels and gas engines are shared with MANY other cars like C30,S40mk2,V50, C70mk2, V70mk2 and XC90mk1, and basically also with S/V/XC60 as the 6cyl variants. All these 5/6cyl are also shared with Ford Focus/Mondeo (5cyl turbo gas) and 6cyl with LR Freelander. I can easily say ALL those engines are VERY stout and reliable units. All of them can go 400000km or more with normal good servicing, especially the 5cyl engines can even go close to a million with normal servicing. Then we have the 4cyl T3/4 units of the late model S80, they are VDA engines that are even in use today. These are not maybe as trouble free as the older units. The 5cyl diesels are actually VERY reliable. The ONLY thing that destroys that engine is the timing belt. Never heard or read of a D5 or similar killing itself by running on its own oil. The only reason the 5cyl engines destroy themselves is: 1. Alternator coupler gets stuck, then destroys the aux belt tensioner, then the belt breaks and goes and destroys the timing belt. Seen this over and over. The 6cyl short engines are another story, a good engine, but never heard any of the Volvo aluminium modular engines would be oil leakers. They don't actually even have a valve cover gasket or oil pan gasket, they are all glued with anaerobic glue and precision machined. The drive system is a bit comples, there you nailed it. But as said never heard of them leaking oil. I own a predecessor to that model, an S90 1998 with 6cyl, and at 4000000km not a drop of oil has come out, the engine is bone dry. The only place that leaks on these engines is the oil cooler and turbo oil return gaskets (on turbo models). Not even the crank and cam seals usually leak. The V8 and the balance shaft, that shaft rusting because of washing the engine is only a case on 2006-7 models, newer ones have an updated seal system.

My family have had Volvos from the 80's, 2002, 2008 and 2014 for at a minimum 4 years up to about 12, and apart from normal servicing and maintenance an ignitor coil was the most expensive repair at less than $200. Which is amazing for the later two cars given how many parts had FoMoCo stamped on them...

I have an S80 V8 (75,000kms) here in Australia. Smooth, luxurious, quiet, very safe and with the most comfortable seats of any car I've driven. This is a true GT sedan that you can drive fast over long distances in supreme comfort. The 650W 12 speaker Dynaudio system is excellent. And the sound of the Yamaha V8 is awesome even with stock exhaust.

By now, things you need to look for in these are: -Subframe -Rear Trail Arm bushings which is identical to Ford Mondeo; -Valve Cover Gaskets which are PIA to fix but doable; -Transmission, if it is serviced; -Alternator and power steering pump if it does not whine; and -4C suspension, if it works in all 3 modes and absorbs the shocks I've been driving my S80 for couple months as a daily driver and these are the common issues I could think of. It is a relatively reliable car compared to the competition. IF you get one, I would suggest you to change all the fluids (i.e., both differential fluids, haldex fluid, power steering flush, coolant and of course, transmission fluid too).

I too like station wagons especially with lower centre of gravity compared to SUVs and full fledged 4X4s. You have practicality esp. cargo space but with better and predictable drive-ability. I currently have a V60 T6 but I wish to have a V70 T6 though.

@@stupid0nut Older Volvos are known for there reliability were that famous P1800 which archived 800000 miles before its motor before it was reconditioned thats very good for a 1960s car and the Volvo red motor is considered a very reliable engine but okd Volvos are reliable l do like reliable vehicles and l also like Toyotas because of there reliability especially older my 1997 Toyota Hilux has only done 433000 kilometers but it will easily do another 433000 kilometers because of the bullet proof 22R motor under the bonnet also other reliable car brands are Honda Lexus Mazda and Suzuki

I've got an S80 D5 SE Lux from 2005 (5 cyl. Diesel) . Clearly not in the same league is this car, but with regular servicing I've had no real problems. The main expenses have been a new ignition barrel which cost £645 (I'm in the UK) and a drivers side window winder motor (similar price). Most recently I had to have some suspension work done which cost me over £800. The original purchase price of the car was £1,300. So, round about £3,400 over five years. The car has done nearly 140,000 miles and I'm averaging 45mpg (diesel remember). The parts are Mercedes-expensive and my local garage will only use genuine Volvo stuff. On the whole though, I'm happy with the old girl. It's comfortable, has all the 'toys' I need and (for a diesel) relatively quiet. Mine is black with a beige leather interior.

I still drive my 2007 V8 S80 and driven 8 years, around 100K km and i haven't changed out a part, except for breaks and air filters. Tranny still works flawlessly, motor works flawlessly and everything's dandy in the suspension and undercarriage. Yes, it's not super fast but.... It can easily outperform most beamers that are cocky. For those who are struggling with feeding it, install LPG. 100km is usually 6-10€ depends on how heavy your foot is. Also, ventilated seats is a lifesaver in +30C summers!

Fun review. I had one in 2008-2009, HVAC fan exploded in its housing, headlights and ABS sensors that stopped and other small issues. Volvo showed good car of the brand and fixed everything as goodwill. Anyways an amazing car to drive. Two times from Sweden to Italy over the alps was just joy!

The transmissions have common solenoid issues. Upshot is it’s shared with many vehicles and reasonably common. New valve bodies are about $1500.

I had same gen V50 and the whole transmission had to be rebuilt. It was a powershift (manufactured by Ford) absolute garbage transmission. If you get a Volvo, get one that has the littlest amount of Ford in it. 2.4d or 2.5t, saves you a lot of headache.

@@JuicingDailyTV I think it's marketed just as powershift. At least some 2liter engines have it. I had 2.0TD and it had it. If you are buying one, make sure to check what transmission it has, if it has powershift, run as fast as you can. There were no parts available for the rebuild, and new one cost over 4000e with shipping and labor, more than the car was worth. Ended up just scrapping the car. Shame, it had 250k km on it, but it was in such a good condition overall, you couldn't tell the mileage.

If you do miss this kind of V8, well Yamaha marine department have taken this design and now there's a F425 - 425 hp V8 four stroke outboard. In other words you need to be on a boat, on the sea to indulge this kind of V8. Oh there were F350 V8 outboards but what's the point if you can a F300 V6 outboard? But anyway you can now enjoy the Yamaha V8s but on sea. You just need to find a boat to take that V8.

I currently own 3x S80 V8s, 2010, 2008, 2007( used to be four) . I am addicted@!! They are an awesome car and not that complicated to work on. Very reliable. Parts from FCP and Rockauto from US NO rust here in Australia as NO salt and relatively dry and you will not be able to find a pre July 2006 S80 V8 to have the engine bearing issue. They have some problems considering they are going on in years but all manageable. My late 2010 is just an amazing car as its fully optioned ( everything). I will never let it go. If you want to know any specifics on this car , just ask.

No, its not prone to rust. It's among the best in terms of rust. Never heard of headlights failing. What is a common fault is suspension parts they wear out quite early.

My old man has an ‘09 S80 with the twin turbo six. Bought as a dealer demo in 2009 and has now done over 200k in it. Other than a few electrical issues over the years it’s been almost faultless. He loves it as it’s such a comfy cruiser for his regular drives up to the Coffs Coast from Sydney. The adaptive cruise is a very early iteration of the tech but still works great and the car just feels really nice to drive. Based on his experience I’d absolutely recommend one.

During development of that engine, me and a colleague wrecked a prototype. We were working on a Sunday, Japanese techs were coming in on Monday to do emissions testing. We did the cardinal fault of not turning the engine over two times after replacing the chains (I think there were two, but not sure I was on the SI6N/A project). So, Monday morning they took the car to the test bay and tried firing it up. The Japs flew home the same day. Both of our faults though, they hadn't updated the documentation (we lined it up acc to an outdated issue) and we didn't double check our work. Cost Volvo around 150-200.000 USD back in the day.

Bought a used V8 XC90 a few years ago. During the test drive I didn’t think to try driving in a carpark… due to the horizontal V8 the turning circle was horrendous. I required a 3 point, or even a 5 point, turn just to get into a supermarket parking spot. Terrible. Then about a moth into ownership a knock started on the front right - mechanic said it needed $8k of work (had paid $11k for it). So went straight to a dealer and traded it in for a used Liberty wagon.

I bought a 2011 S80 3.2 in 2018 for $11k at 99k km, and now is at 165k km, no issues start at -38C without problems here in Edmonton Canada. Before Covid, I was lucky to see a Volvo on the streets, but after the Japanese and American car lots were empty, people began to be wiser and bought Volvos, so now are many on the road. Unfortunately, you can notice the American ownership of plastic quality parts!

I was kinda right when I guessed today's review car would be from an American marque on Tuesday lol 😂. I'd personally give the S80 more consideration that some of its European rivals and former family members (aka Ford and its former subsidiaries) but would be more likely to take one of its Asian competitors than it if I had to choose. I do admit the kids seat hidden in the middle is a pretty cool feature and should be in more cars made nowadays. I think that this video has one of the longest appearances from Hullsy to date but can't be 100% sure. Will just add that all S80 V8 had the modification done to the drain of water to save the balance shaft bearing/ seal. Early XC90 V8 2005-2006 had these issues, you need to check the serial number on them. So the V8 S80 are a safe option, mine has now 230.000 km checked the valve covers and no big leak yet.....

I have an 07 V8 in blue. Its my first car and has been quite the ride. My uncle bought it for me for around 9k with all said and done (USD). Currently pushing 140k miles on it, had 127k when I got it. Its had issues and still does, most of the suspension needs redoing, along with both CV axles, and with Volvos adaptive system it is quite expensive, not to mention its hard to find people willing to work on them because of the engine, trans, and suspension. Already had both gaskets replaced which was 1k on its own. Its a lot of fun to drive, and since I'm 19 so my boy racer fix is mostly satisfied, and when its totally fixed I plan on doing a few things to it. Kind of hard since there's no real aftermarket support for these cars minus a sway bar, an exhaust, and some wheels and tires. I just recently moved to Florida, just south of Tallahassee, from Omaha, Nebraska, and it made the 1200 mile trip with all these issues, with no new issues popping up. Its a great car, and you only get one first car so I plan to keep it for life. I feel the V8 is a gem of a car, And looks quite good even today. Unless you really care for the engine in the car, I'd suggest almost any other luxury car for under 10k though. But god, this car has made me fall in love with Volvos of all types.

yeah aftermarket support for Volvos is not very big for really any of the models/trims the p1 chassis with the c30,c70,s40, and v50 probably has the most with the p2 s60/v70 cars and p80 Volvos of the 90s following close behind them and the p3 s60/v60 after that. Unless you have a high drive to learn things on your own and are willing to take risks and try custom making your own parts like I do, modifying these Volvos in America can be a challenge. The reason these S80s and the equivalent V70s are better than most competitors (including Japanese) is the AWD and 5, 6 or 8 cylinder engines, thats why the S60 Polestars could actually compete with the Germans at the time.

we have an old 08 xc70 d5, its basicly a jacked up 4wd diesel version of this. it has the exact interior. mine just has a really nice wood steering wheel. it was bought as an inbetween car, but after few years we still have it, its just so nice that we always postpone selling it. its been fair on maintainance, the blower motor went, and yeah.. fckn hell its quite the job. this is the second volvo we have and they both ended up being very dear to us, what i (a v8 and bmw/benz fan) have learned about them is that they get you in the long run, volvo tends to really think about alot of little things, and you dont notice them untill you really start to use the car. they focus on the usabillity and comfort rather than to out manouver a 5 series through a bend i just cant agree to compare the s80 to a mzda 6 and let alone a liberty/legacy, i drive both of those on a regular basis, both much newer than the old sweedish tank and there is a level of isolation/refinment that the japanese cars just dont have. i'm surprised you say that there is a stiffness to the one you are test driving, mine is ultra soft, its the only car i know of that literally does not seem to notice driving over a gravel road, you barely feel any difference. i live in a nordic winter country with salted roads and just horrible conditions for a vehicle, rust vise the volvos seem to hold up better then just about anything

I’ve got a 2011 S80 with the 224kw T6 engine - just as fast as the V8 but not as cool. Apart from the aircon fan going - it’s been totally reliable (at 147,000kms now) Mine was pretty heavily optioned when new so it’s got all the driver assist stuff with adaptive cruise control, and the world’s worst pop-up Sat Nav screen - which was also used in Aston Martins of the same era. It took me forever to find one - searching on and off for years for a facelift with adaptive cruise control. But for what I like in a car - subtle, fast enough, AWD, big sedan there’s not much else out there other than Audi A6/8s, and maybe a 6cyl Liberty. They kept making them until 2015, when I think it was one of Australia’s worst selling cars. Would still kill for a fully optioned 2014/15 one though!

A V70 T6 is more than enough and it's quick. I wish I can have a V70 T6 but instead I have a V60 T6. Moreover a V70 is technically smaller than a S80 except for luggage space.

Otherwise you might as well get a XC90 V8 but personally I still prefer station wagons which they have proper lower centre of gravity.

The V70 from the same generation is exactly the same/very close front half, so would likely be a super simple swap, could even put it in the XC70 if you really wanted

I'm an Alfa guy primarily, but I've always had a soft spot for Volvos and SAABs, and the S80 is one I'd happily buy to use in my daily freeway commute. Coincidentally, my Alfa mechanic also looks after a lot of local Volvo owners - seems to be a few commonalities between both marques, their owners and their innate quirks.

I can only say I had from a brand new an xc90 from the same-ish era and it’s been an absolute shocker. To the point where the cost of repairs despite only having done around 140k km exceeds the value of the car- hence it will be scrapped. I urge anyone to take extreme car with a a Volvo around that time. The only saving grace with this model may be the Japanese engine.

The S80 in any engine spec is the car you buy if you cover a lot of ground. Yeah a Mazda 6 will do you just fine if you're commuting to work or doing the school run, never really leaving your city or area. But when you are out there having to travel hundreds of K's on a terribly maintained highway, you'll want to kiss yourself for buying an S80 instead. Especially when you arrive at the arse end of a road train in your way.

I had a 2003 Volvo S40 T4. It's a 2 litre turbo engine. It was a fantastic car with very decent performance. I sold it about 10 years ago. It is one of my major regrets in life. It is still to this day my favourite of the 20 or so cars I have owned over my lifetime.

Not sure we got the V8 Volvo S80 here in Europe, never seen one. Volvo are not generally seen as unreliable in Europe though, I had an R Design V40 T2 and loved it, no issues. V40 boot was too small for a pram and baby kit though so bought a Mazda 6 estate instead. That Volvo is 16 years old, I would expect electronic gremlins and coolant leaks to develop eventually like any old vehicle. The life span of most vehicles in the UK is around 12 to 15 years anyway, so most will be scrapped before really serious faults develop. I noticed in Australia that vehicle bodywork lasts a lot longer than in Northern Europe, but Australian sun is harsh on plastics and paint, and the dust in some regions eats bearings and gets in everywhere, the snow fields and coast in OZ will cause issues too. Different climatic regions seem to develop different issues in different vehicles. Back to my Mazda, I loved it, it was a sport tourer in metallic red, it had the 2.2 skyactive diesel engine which was not very fuel efficient although powerful enough, it blew its turbo which Mazda fixed out of warranty for free, with labour 👍, it also developed a very rusty rear sub frame which is why I got shot if it. That Mazda 6 2.2 diesel we get here in Europe is renowned for being unreliable, although Mazda customer support is superb. Japanese cars do have better general reliability than European here in UK, but they are certainly not bullet proof especially the diesels. Asian cars do have better electronics though, which is odd as most Euro electronics are made also made in Asia? I suppose it depends on the component quality the customer demands along with R&D corner cutting??

We did, I have one now and am in the UK, there's just over 100 registered here. Not going to lie I didn't even know Volvo made such a thing until I randomly came across it. I had to buy it spent way too much to buy it and absolutely adore driving it. Road tax is £730 which I personally think is bordering on criminal but hey that's the UK government for you.

When it comes to Volvos, they are not like other European car companies. Their parts are not that expensive, they are quite normal prices. Volvos, especially the P2 models, are extremely reliable. The most basic of all maintenance that you need to do for every single car is change the oil every thousand miles/kilometers (7,500 mi/12,000km,Volvo) like the factory recommends. It is such a simple thing and yet many people overlook it and then people start complaining about reliability and that is where it all that talk about reliability comes from.

Get a 2017 or 2018 and the reliability shouldn't be an issue, mazda adressed the skyactive engine problems for those model years. The DPF issues where adressed aswell, but I drive a lot on the highway so I don't think it would have affected me anyway

Interesting review. You could change suspension settings via 3 buttons in the middle consol in front of shifter. Make it more firm or lousy. :) When it comes to repairs here in Europe it is opposite. I would say it is more expensive to repair Japanese cars. And if you compare Volvo to Audi, BMW or Merc, repairs will be cheaper for Volvo. There were guys at Volvo who swapped V8 into second gen S40. :) As you mentioned Volvo is good brand and usually underrated in front of German trio.

I've owned multiple p2 s60 t5s...I've been building my current one to be a circuit track car that I planned to keep long term but if I had the opportunity to get a p80 c70 t5 with the manual transmission I would let it go for that car.

Early models balancer shaft bearing sits in a nice little hollow, open to the events…like water. Then it corrodes and fails and stuff goes really bad. Like you need to find a new motor.
