just b/c you're a big market team doesn't mean you should waste money on a guy on the back end of his career. I think they're smart with 4 years, if other teams want to pay then that's up to them. You can't possibly be surprised about this. for the 4th season in a row the Sox have operated this way now. Make all sorts of promises and don't keep many at all. You are not over reacting at all my friend you are starting to see what some of us have been saying for a while now. I think it was pointed out that there have been only a couple of FA signings of more than 2 years for a while now. Think about it, for this year they promised to improve the starters, which they have, improve the bullpen, that might be debatable at this point as the most important piece to a pen is the closer and they haven't signed a reliable one yet. it is great they they maybe able to get you to the ninth but then you need that one guy who can consistently finish it off, and there were a bunch of closers out there where you could have not a good pen but one of the best in the game. They promise to improve the defense, and for the fourth year in a row they will rely on Story to anchor it. They have no new players and any position except for who ever is playing 2nd, so basically they are bringing back the same last place defensively team as last year. Then they promised to balance the lineup, adding a right handed power bat, instead they subtracted the best right handed bat and promised to replace him and can't do that. All they care about is trying to build a mid market team without spending even close to the CBT and feeding the fans a bunch of empty promises. Please keep your ranting up as it is fitting for this team at this time until they prove otherwise. Loved this video!!!!!

I personally think 4 years is too much for Bregman. Personally I want to see Grissom or Campbell at 2nd. I would settle for Hamilton for short term even though he is a lefty. Bregman will be playing out of position. He is a 3rd Baseman. I do not think the money is worth the bang for the buck. The Red Sox only 26 spots on the active roster. You have both Yosida and Story taking 2 spots which is costing 40 million dollars. The young guys do not have to be out of this world to start. They just need to be adequate. But, they have 4 or 5 options. I do not think Bregman will make a break the Red Sox. I think another reliever will be more valuable. The Red Sox will lose a draft choice if they sign Bregamn. If they go over the tax limit, they also change their draft position which affects the future. You have to weigh everything. If he was a perfect fit, that would be different. They will be making changes all the way up to the trade deadline. I personally think it will be Grissom to start the year at second. A general manager has to think of now and also the future. I look at Bregman and feel he would be good for this year. But, that is all. Also, I do not think they will do anything until pitchers and catchers report because they would need to DFA someone. They have at least 2 spots when they move pitchers to the 60 Days.

@remaracs62832 күн бұрын
Can’t tell you how much I disagree with you on this. You say playing the kids is met with a ton of uncertainty. How is getting Bregman not met with uncertainty? First off, you saw his walk rate cut in half this year to try to keep his xbh production to a normal level. Joey Votto did this towards the end of his career for 1 year and then completely fell off. JDM did this after leaving the Red Sox for the dodgers and he’s clearly entered a different phase of his career. Not only that, the idea of giving this guy 150m+ to move off of his position where he just won a GG shouldn’t be undersold either. We only have anecdotal evidence by Cora saying he took good groundballs he would be fine there. We have no idea if he can play 2B. He also has 3 years of .700 ops vs lefties so he’s not this righty bat who’s going to mash lefties. He also plays in Houston which might be the most righty friendly ballpark for HRs in baseball. Sox got Grissom for sale. Is that a complete sunk cost? They have made Campbell untouchable in trades, where does he play? So you’re going to lock up this regressing player to play out of position and block 1 of your top prospects who is also a righty? I don’t get the logic, it’s a clunky fit. If you’re saying you’re willing to eat Yoshida’s contract and grab a solid reliever for him maybe like 45/54m to Cleveland for a reliever, then you move Devers to DH and grab Bregman to lock up the 3B position I’m all for it but as the roster is currently constructed his addition makes 0 sense to me, outside of the Cora connection
@KyleBowers-f2u2 күн бұрын
I don't understand their hesitation. Have Alex play second for a year so you can introduce Campbell or Grissom slowly, then move him to third for the rest of his contract after you offload Masa and have Raffy perma-DH. There's a saying in this town: "______ will never have to buy a drink in Boston again." Once you play a key role in a legendary Beantown team win, you're good. If it's a championship, you're good for life. Keith Foulke tried to ruin that, but by and large, folks forgot his Johnny From BK moment. No one else has really come close to blowing it. Then came Josh Beckett. No one in the annals of Boston sports like him. Played a KEY role in a championship (probably would've a second had he not gotten hurt) and pitched valiantly again in the ALCS the year after. If you do THAT...well, you're REALLY good for life. Except we had his slow descent, front & center role in Beer & Chicken, and the blubber sprain. Yep, all that effort and good will: GONE. Who'da thunk it? And now, John Henry is the Josh Beckett of Boston owners. I mean, you win 4 chips, 10 playoffs in 15 years, you've got it made, right? Unless you're John Henry (or body-snatched by Jeremy Jacobs). Never exactly media savvy nor prone to understanding humans who didn't master calculus in 3rd grade, JH eventually just stopped caring about humans altogether. He's much fonder of numbers, esoteric derivatives, and bein' a sports magnate--cuz that is where the real fun and life satisfaction's at, folks. NUMBERS don't complain or get entitled. Numbers always say, "You're the best, JH. Keep doublin' down and makin' me bigger. I love you." Remember this when we continue to rationalize buying his tickets...or fooling ourselves "something will change," this year. The last two years have proved this ain't the case. The only betrayal left is for this team to now COMPETE with its young talent... only for JH to go AWOL (he'll be tracking down Joe Castiglione to apologize) and refuse to take on money at the trade deadline; refuse to REALLY compete for a championship. Watch for it, then act like you're surprised.

@ maybe it will be Grissom ? You have two young talented players seemingly who are ready to make the next step. You got hammy as a stop gap as well

Corbin this rant may have been a little over the top. With him added it creates a bit of a log jam, where does everyone fit in the line up? while simultaneously enabling the younger players to move up. I want to believe if they were able to move Yoshida they probably would go for Bregman more seriously.
@redseatradio2 күн бұрын
you can always find a way to fit too much talent. You’re flat screwed if you realize you don’t have enough. A big market team like Boston should never find themselves in a position where they don’t have enough.

So I take it that there is no limit to the number of years the Sox should be wlling to offer. I hear the Astros are offering 6, so it may take 7 to take him from his old team. Is that okay for the Sox to offer, or is there a limit somewhere?
@redseatradio2 күн бұрын
No I just think if 1 singular year is the separator especially 4-5 that’s absurd. Astros get to 7 okay fine I get it

Signing a 25-30 mil per year 3 or more year deal on a right handed hitter who hit only .227 against lefties, had only 44 walks in 631 at bats,hit .195 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs for a guy who has been in a 3 year decline might not be the smartest thing for your organization. Shouldn't matter what market team you are. Again,three year decline. The smart play is use Campbell when ready, use Grissom,Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez and wait until Feb 18th to see if we have a shot at Vlad. The numbers I posted are important.

I 100% understand why Breslow is hesitant. Give me Campbell all day over hoping Bregman straightens out after going backward 3 years in a row and use the $$$ on a real hammer. Id have signed Teoscar.

@atgn70 but he hasn’t been going backward in any category BUT OBP and is absolutely sobering that can straighten out
@atgn702 күн бұрын
@redseatradio what hes doing against lefties and risp and 2 outs isnt backward? Walks not backward? My honest point is spend the money on the right guy and Campbell is so close.

They refused all these players who, in all likelihood, will end up being busts. I'm 58 years old and have noticed that over the past 55 seasons, the Red Sox and Yankees have one thing in common. They both treat prospects like they're ready for Cooperstown. The only difference is the Yanks use a Jedi mind trick on other teams to convince them to send the Yanks their stars for players who amount to nothing. What do the Red Sox do? Trade players like Mookie Betts for nothing.

I would much rather not sign Bregman this year if we can get Vladdy next year. Grissom + Campbell and a healthy Story could potentially do the job for us with the upgraded pitching staff. Moving Yoshida could be easier by the trade deadline or even next offseason

Henry’s solution to avoid facing criticism is to just stop going to fan events…his priorities are f’d. He doesn’t deserve to represent the franchise.

Are they cheap or are they clueless or are they both? They are relying on the work done by the guy they just fired which in a real world he should be able to fire them.

The least the Red Sox should do is sign Carlos Estevez or Robertson to strengthen their bullpen, before they are gone.

Maybe it's me, but four years is a reasonable offer with an opt-out clause after three. He's showing signs of age, Corbin, and I'm not sure Devers is willing to move to DH. They have several other options to start at 2B. I like Bregman, but not what he's asking. I think we could get two good years of Arenado AND Scherzer (bullpen help) for the price of Bregman. Let alone five or more years with stifling prospect growth. I'm ready for ST baseball. Let the owner make the business decisions, not the fans. Fans prefer owners like Steinbrenner's Yankees or the Dodgers owner to spend like drunken sailors. We have solid depth and can compete with any A.L. team right now and would still be under the luxury tax. Surely, they can finish ten or more games better in 2025, than in 2024, with the new and veteran faces returning from injuries and several of the hottest prospects in baseball.

Fenway sports group is too stretched among all their sports holdings to prioritize reckless spending on a redundant player lil a .263 average hitter like bregman…he’s not a splash at this point, though he does have talent, he blocks what the Sox are doing long term. Get rid of yoshida, then yes, bregman can enter the equation, however as you stated, Mayer and Campbell need spots, devers and casas are infield staples, and yoshida blocks the DH spot. If it comes down to Casas or bregman, dadas has more upside being cheaper and more pop potential. Yes the Sox need a right hand power bat, but I’d much rather wait and see what options are presented by trade deadline.

I think the team is competing. As far as I know, Boston is the only team that has won the World Series 4 times since 2000. Thanks John Henry, This 84 year old suffered for so many years (since 1949) before you and your team bought the Soxs.

First, Redsox will be spending on Houck, Crochet and maybe Cases if he produces. Second, Redsox are not done so I'm being patient. Plan B or C soon. Third: Boras is a problem because he makes stupid demands for Bregman. Redsox should not give into it. Lastly, Redsox might be better having Hamilton, Campbell & Grissom fight for second base.

They are a legit joke now when it comes to free agency. They may have offered 700 mil for Soto but they knew dam well that some team would offer more. AB fills a need that they have right now! Campbell may not be ready this year but as a Sox fan I'm hoping that he is awesome!!! It's the only way we'll get stars. And then we will trade them for a bag of used baseballs
@justinmulcahy74322 күн бұрын
Bregman would be nice, but I don't think 6 yrs of him is the move when they could spend bigger on Vlad and one of King/Cease/Valdez/Gallen next year. They already look like a playoff team and Bregman doesn't make them WS favorites. They have other moves they should make first to set up an extended window. Moving Wilyer BEFORE we ruin his value by benching him for Anthony and Campbell should be a priority. Moving Masa at the deadline to free up the DH spot for next year should be a priority. Extending Crochet, Anthony, and Campbell should be a priority. But like you said, those moves wouldn't mean anything if the money doesn't follow in free agency. So, they have to get uncomfortable and spend for a star at some point.
@redseatradio2 күн бұрын
You can do both or any of it is my point and we sit here because they haven’t been spending and saying man we are really gonna have to pick and choose. And yea it may make them one of the favorites to win the AL if they bring Bregman in this year
@justinmulcahy74322 күн бұрын
@@redseatradio It would definitely move the needle to winning the division, but I already think they are a playoff team and winning the division is different from being world series favorites. I see your point and 100% agree, but I think they've already missed on the best names and don't think Bregman is the right move just because we were promised a bat. Soto, Adames, Teoscar, Snell, Fried, and Burnes were all big names that the Sox were connected to this offseason and didn't sign.

@@redseatradio not disputing that, but they were/ are willing to go over threshold if needed. I think once again they misread the market. That's what been happening with Bloom and Breslow. But, I don't blame them, I think its the people who have been associated with the team since then. Bregman, he's on the decline, but front office view that is career is almost over.
