If you are purchasing a new fly line, or would simply like to change your fly line it's so easy! Many new anglers are intimidated by the process but as long as you are using a new Scientific Anglers, RIO, or other top end line they come with what is called a "welded loop" on the ends.
Follow the instructions on the video and you'll have a fresh line on your reel in no time at all.

I checked out a couple of other videos on KZbin and yours by far is a simplest the easiest and I love your presentation 💯👍❤️❤️❤️... I live in Indiana and I used to live in Plymouth Indiana which was near South bend and I used to go up on the st. Joe River in South bend Indiana, and spin rod fish for steelhead trout when they are on their spring and fall runs but you can catch them all season long. I have watched numerous videos on fly fishing for them and I know it would be a challenge and I would love doing it so I got me a fly rod by the way I am 65 years old and retired so I am in nothing but time on my hand and I love to fish but anyhow wanted to try fly-fishing up on the st.joe for the steelhead after watching those videos! Yours was very simple presentation and easy-to-understand and I just love the way you presented it thanks so much for that video and keep any related videos coming if I could subscribe to your page I would do it 💯👍❤️

Im so happy I found this today. I won a new reel and I needed to spool her up. Seriously, I’ve done other ways of attaching backing to line. This was by far the easiest way I’ve ever done it. Thank you guys!

Two double surgeon knots are much easier than an albright knot, that I saw on another video, for tying a loop. Excellent.

In a word - WOW - easiest connection I have ever made. I will not worry about getting into the backing like I used to. Thanks.

I had 30-pound gel-spun backing that was about 6-7 years old - tied these double, double-surgeons and was able to bust the gel-spun by just giving the knot a hard yank. I'm glad you mentioned checking the backing in this video! The weird thing was, I couldn't break the gel-spun with no knot in it, but any tied knot snapped the line pretty easily. Anyway, replaced the backing and got my 10-WT tarpon line loaded on my reel. Heading off to the BVI with bonefish and tarpon flies I purchased from Red's Fly Shop!

I actually like the plastic spools. I take lines on and off reels a fair amount and the cardboard isn’t very easy to reuse.

I usually create a loop because I still want to be able to change out lines. I double the line over and tie a series of three nail knots to hold it together. Coat with UV resin to make it smooth.

If your looking for an easy way, i guess this is ok. But the best way to make this connection is with the FG knot, alberto knot, or the tried and true albright knot...

For my saltwater rigs, I like to do a Bimini twist, coated with some flex cement to allow for smooth gliding through the guides. Do you think your double surgeon knot is sufficient for saltwater use? Also, you mentioned there was a right and a wrong way to attach the backing to the fly line but you didn’t show the incorrect way. 😊
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 2 жыл бұрын
I use this exact system for all my saltwater connections anymore, it's rare for my terminal tippet to exceed the strength of this connection. I use 65# backing, and the welded loops anymore are nearly bulletproof. I've caught some absolute bruiser Roosterfish, GT's, Permit, and others that pull like trucks and have never had this fail. A Bimini is very nice, but I have to watch a video every time I tie one. This connection is something you can't screw up! The "wrong" way is to put bring the reel through the backing loop, rather than the line through the backing loop. It doesn't marry quite the same way. Great question.

@@redsflyshop Thank you, Joe. This is very good information BTW. Glad I asked about the wrong way of forming the L-L connection. I’ve always passed the reel through the loop on the backing and in fact, many people remind you to make that loop large enough so that the reel passes through. I’ll have to pay close attention at the difference. I do always make sure the loop connection on the backing side is not folded over as it tends to do if not careful. Perhaps this is what you’re referring to. Not to be stubborn or anything but I believe if you make sure both sides seat well and look symmetrical, it should be equivalent which piece you pass through the loop. Could be wrong, you obviously are the expert with tons of experience. 😊

@@redsflyshopwould this knot be sufficient for 8x strand braid? I spooled my reel up with 65 pound braid for tarpon and want to make sure the braid isn’t gonna cut through my fly line
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 9 ай бұрын
Oh boy I'm not sure, the Hatch backing that I've historically used is much larger in diameter and fairly soft. Part of it depends on the tippet size you are using, if you're using 20# tippet these connections are far less critical.@@captaindsoars5102

Is important to add that when spooling the fly line on the reel you need to spool bottom to bottom, as you said the line spools onto the reel through the bottom but isn’t important to add the line should come off the fly line spool also from the bottom ?
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop Жыл бұрын
Yes that's right, didn't look back to see if that's how I did it but yes, bottom to bottom is the way.

Can you use this method with GSP backing ? Thanks .
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop Жыл бұрын
Yes you sure can, the modern RIO GSP backing works fine as long as the loop is modern and has the solid coating most companies are using nowadays.

It should go without saying but I also tell people if they're changing it themselves to run the fly line between your fingers while reeling so you can stack it neatly on the spool and it wont all bunch up to one side
