Can my Norwood LM29 mill a log this big?

In this video, I push the Norwood LM29 close to its limits with a very large white oak log. The Norwood sawmill boasts it can handle 29" diameter logs but is that accurate? We get close to those dimension and run into some issues.

Have milled 29" logs with this mill. Keep the log dogs lower, this really adds capacity. Too bad I can't post a picture, really impressive. I also simply use two wedges to hold log when there no more space for log dogs to clear the carriage, with the with of these logs, they don't go anywhere, be it pine, white oak or maple. I will modify my dog, remove the crank handle and replace with a bolt that I will be able to "screw" into the log with a cordless impact drill, will be much faster to secure log and spare those extra inches to be able to use the log dog. Thanks for sharing those videos!

At age 67 I have learned that when I start a new project that tools that I don't currently have will make that project move along a lot easier. So I invest in a new tool most of the time the tool cost is under $ 150.dollars. Between the fibromyalgia and three neck surgeries, the last surgery did not eliminate the neck and arm pain. Projects that once took hours now take days and a two-week project will spread out over months. So the old saying with age comes wisdom, here's my little wisdom. Save your body and find a more efficient way to turn those logs. Your body will like you better when age starts to creep up on you. Let me tell you that what I could do in my early 50's and what my body objects to now is vast. Love your show, keep up the fine work that you and your family have been engaged in. God Bless

How well has the LM29 held up over the years. After a year of really wanting to buy a mill I finally went to pull the trigger a month ago on a HM130 Max. Had a few questions about the mill and wanted to talk to someone at Woodland, but after a month of leaving a few voicemails and filling out their "Contact Us" form I have yet to get a reply. Now I am looking at Norwood's LM29V2, don't really know what the difference is between the LM29 and LM29V2 but I plan on giving them a call tomorrow. Also, keep up the great videos, I enjoy watching them.

I really like your videos. Very entertaining and informative. Buy yourself a good set of pallet forks to replace bucket. Not the clamp on type. The uses for them are endless from hauling brush/limbs to turning cants.

Great idea on the clamp and wedges! I bet my mill will have that same issue for logs over 20 inches. I'm not real sure as yet. I don't want to put my mill down but will say it is suppose to cut a 26 inch log. Thanks for the idea. Have a good one

What Norwood should have told you is to buy two more clamps. then as you came to them you could drop them down one at a time and would always have tow clamping the log.

Hey Troy, thanks for your informative videos. I've never owned a mill so take this for what it's worth, but wouldn't you be able to devise a dogging system on the ends of the log?
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 4 жыл бұрын
It would be possible. The attachment point to the mill would have to be moveable as long lengths are alway different (at least the way I cut them)

I hate hearing you beat yourself up with a heart like yours prone to doing good and looking after your family plus never passing a chance to giggle at even your own words as they come into double entendre. Your a naturally good and nice person who take that cheek and turns it both ways doing no harm to others as they blither without considering you who has done no wrong or at least intentionally as your a good person. I myself have said things that come out wrong to you but it wasn't meant the way it sounded. I personally like you and your family who give it all. Your kids won't be the ones who make the newspaper as the shooter in a school or wife who shoots some other woman just cause someone else does something wrong. Don't get me wrong, your wife or you either one would fire a shotgun dead blank at someone threatening yours as your protective love is so good and strong when needed. You'ns are pillars in your neighborhood. I wish I could live your life style but age has got me in a corner

You mentioned running a Norwood lm 2000 in the past. That’s what I have now and am considering getting a lm29. Would you do that? Also, I have a 13 hp Honda, wondering if the lm2000 you had experience with had that engine and what the difference is, felt power wise, with your kohler at 14 hp? It looks like that’s what’s on you current mill. I love the way the Honda holds up and the decompression mechanism it has making the pull pretty easy, but if the torque increase on paper translates to real felt more power, perhaps the kohler is the way to go.? Love the videos, looks just like my place!

Steve the lm29 is a bit of a step down from the Lumbermate 2000. If I was classifying them, I would say the lumbermate 2000 evolved into the HD36 and the LM29 is a new model. The bed is different, the log rests are different and the lm29 can't take all the accessories the HD36 can. That being said, it is still a good mill. Our 2000 had the Honda motor and it is still running as my brother has the mill now. I don't notice the difference either way in power but I think the v-block honda had a little more torque.

Maybe Norwood would recommend to you the Woodmizer LT 40 for a better dogging system. Just sayin!!!

At roughly 6500$ usd for this CDN/US made mill, complete with trailer kit for this "hobby" mill, this is an amazing machine.

What is the tong (?) you have on your tractor to lift logs called? The one you used to roll the log. And where can I get one? I have an LM29 sawmill also and hate the log dogs that came with it - both the regular dogs and the cam dogs. I even went so far as to buy an additional dog and cam dog, but they do not work well even using two. The vibration causes the dogs to come loose. I wish they had dogs like Wood-Mizer. Of course I've never had a Wood-Mizer, so maybe they don't work any better. I can't believe Norwood told you to make your own dogs. Great customer service. Thanks for any information you can give me on that piece you used to lift the log.

Great video Troy! Now, since I am moving to the same relative area that you live in (only in Virginia) and have the same type of forest (age, size, type) as you do, would you still recommend the LM29? I was planning to buy one in a few months, though now I may need to reevaluate.

The LM29 will do 90% of the logs I want to mill on my land. If I was 15 years younger and starting a huge project on the farm (or if I was going to mill for other people), I would step up to the HD36. The LM29 has been a solid mill, though.
