Reebok Floatride Energy X Review: Does Reebok’s cut-price carbon shoe deliver the goods?

At £130 the Reebok Floatride Energy X comes in a lot cheaper than most running shoes with carbon plates, and though it’s pitched more as a long distance trainer/racer than an all-out speedster, Reebok’s recent record of producing great shoes at low prices meant we had high hopes for the Energy X.
Did it deliver on those hopes? In this video Run Tester Nick delivers his verdict on the Reebok Floatride Energy X.

Bought them on Reebok website for 64 quids (delivery included) and tested today at the running track. If you are looking for a cheap pair of super shoes long distance oriented, these are definitely the shoes for you. I can't understand why Reebok made them so unnecessarily heavy (aka rigid heel counter and bulky extra foam on the heel). Shaving a bit of weight, it could be a very good pair of super shoes. Maybe not fastest, but certainly very comfortable. After a tough session, the next day your legs will feel ready to go, again!

Nice review, I just picked up this shoe for £68 with discounts and the energy 4 for £48. I really like them both, I'll use the energy 4 for 4-5 normal runs each week and go for the X when I up the distance once or twice a week. I normally went for the Symmetros for long runs and the stack on the X feels similar to that but definitely stiffer.

This was a great review. What I would say because I am a mid-foot striking (heals when tired), heavier slow runner I really like the miles I put in on this shoe. Most likely because I am slower paced and have a bit more weight to compress the foam. I got mine on sale for $108 so I'm not mad at the price I paid. If I had paid $170 then I would be disappointed. I think this will be great for my longer runs.

Great video as normal, always give honest opinions, whether good or bad. Is there any chance you could do a video covering the Importance of having the correct drop on your shoes, if it is important or not.

For EU sizes, I got half size though. Reebok shoes are usually a tad longer than the other brands but not significant at all. I went for my usual size for these.

would you use this over the saucony endo speed as a daily trainer? budget wise this is cheaper. understand it's not as versatile but for an average runner like me??

For me it seem that these would be categories in the performance daily training like the Pegasus turbo 2/zoom fly 5…etc. and at the price point it seems competitive to the rest of the market in that category. Personal loved the Reebok forever energy 3 and I’ve been loving what Reebok are doing recently. I feel like Reebok will be releasing a “real” carbon racing shoe soon.

Unrelated to the review but I found it interesting that Nick heel strikes, while I always thought that was incorrect form due to decreased efficiency/increased risk for injury. Is any of this true?

Agree Nick. The fit is waaay too big for me. The upper feels bin baggy on the foot. It’s a daily shoe for me also, tried 400 m reps in the energy x and it was too heavy and cumbersome. It’s a real shame as I’m rooting for reebok to produce a top end carbon shoe

I don't think it's necessary to think of this shoe at this cost, with Reebok having promo codes pretty much all year round. I personally have a 35% promo code from my bank, which works every time. And with that discount it's a different debate around this shoe.

Hi! Reebok are certainly great for discounts, but so are other brands at times, and we can’t really review shoes on the basis of discounts that may or may not be available. The RRP is important, but obviously if people watching can find a deal then it can change their thinking about the shoe!

I just wanted to emphasize the reality that you can get newly released shoes from Reebok at a discounted price, while the other brands are discounting mostly after few months after the release.
