Another great informative video, thanks. I think another reason for the slow decline using kalkwasser is the products in the hobby evolve. Kalk is becoming the old school way for alk and calc. It's no longer necessary to maintain two, three, or four solutions, or a complicated reactor. Example is Tropic Marin All-For-Reef powder. It contains calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and all the key trace elements. it's super clean with no fuss. There is another company getting ready to release the same type of product but I can't think of the name. Anyway as the hobby evolves it gets easier to maintain a thriving tank. Happy reefing.

I introduced a Kalk reactor about 8 months ago, mainly to get my pH up. Im running it exactly how you are with its own dedicated pump. The added benefit is that it has reduced my 2 part dosing by approx 75% and that a huge $ saving. A great video Marcus and confirmation that at least I am doing that right.

There is no need for a kalk reactor. Kalk dose not need to be Stirred at all . What seats at the bottom is just useless power. Just Another piece of equipment that is not needed at all .

I still use it today I' drip it into my 100 gallon system 24/7 real slow and it keeps my dkh and alkalinity constant I love kalkwasser for one it's not expensive and it works my pH goes from 7.9 to 8.3 in the afternoon been using kalkwasser for Over 25 years always wear a mask when mixing kalkwasser you don't want to breathe in kalkwasser dust wear your mask

Its interesting how reefing styles change over the years but differently around the world. Kalkwasser is less popular in Europe these days but raging in the USA and downunder. CO2 scrubbing is more expensive but its doing the Ph trick for the calcium reactor and its NOT messy.

Good video m8, i also went too kalk a few months now, i stopped my 3 part aquaforest balling and i see better results ... the ph boost is number one! I dose it via 4 head jebao doser, i use the two heads of the doser that dose 24times per day each.. so 48times per day, i only fill the dosing reservoir with the clear kalk , after i let it sit for a day or so...So far so good i am at 600ml per day at 50gal. I am thinking for a stirer for laiter also.

Hey Reef Nerd, I will be setting up a Kalk stirrer soon. How do you know when to top up the reactor with more Kalk? Cheers, great video!

Kalkwasser is great for kh and ph increases and stability if dosed correctly, over dose it and your in trouble, dosing it normally your pumps and glass are a pain to clean your skimmer will and does go crazy, your infra red eye ato can go nuts with the hard residue left behind, precipitation of other elements can be a pain when using kalk too, it can cause problems with your skin too, i would personally leave kalk dosing until your more experienced
@ReefNerd2 жыл бұрын
A lot of the issues your describing (messy in the sump) can be avoided by dosing it to a very high flow area or as close to directly into your return pumps intake as possible. That will reduce/eliminate all precipitation issues in your sump. Personally mine is dosed directly into my algae turf scrubber and that does an excellent job of preventing my sump getting any precipitation

@@ReefNerd oh your aquarium looks amazing but your very experienced, i personally would run kalk over a cheap ac wavemaker that you dont mind replacing, not a good idea over your expensive ecotech or varios abyss etc :) you’ve really got the new aquarium nailed and dialed in too, keep up the great content

You have a beautiful reef.. I enjoy every video you upload. Recently I came across the way ACI Aquaculture does kalk dosing. They're doind only at night time, but are suplimenting with the entire quantity that the system evaporates per day. Sure, during the night salinity drops a little bit, but the benefit of making PH not only high, but also stable, with minimal differencies between night and day, is huge. I'm considering doing the same thing. What do you think?
@ReefNerd2 жыл бұрын
Awesome I will check it out. That method definitely sounds good for larger tanks!

I been using Chris method for a while now and I can say it works . Dosing at night keeps my ph all day at 8.3. Trying to get it up to 8.4. But my growth is insane. I only use the kalk Chris uses. Tried BRS kalk and it's just garbage.

Great video as alway, I’m really thinking about trying kalkwasser but to be honest I’m a bit scared of it😂, but the more I watch videos like your I’m am getting a bit more confident, I might make a reactor because there really expensive over here in Scotland but yeah I know I can make one, so maybe one day, see you again soon.Colin🏴

Go for it! Start slow until you get a feel for it and how the equipment you setup with it works, but its totally worth it, heaps of benefits for the reef tank

Hey my light settings are more or less the same as the schedule I post long ago on Reef2Reef. I may have increased the duration of the peak intensity a bit sinse then I cant remember. Hi Marcus, great vid, how much higher does kalk raise your PH by in your tank vs 2 part dosing?
@ReefNerd2 жыл бұрын
It does depend on a number of factors like how much you dose and your tanks 'natural' PH based on your environment. However most people should expect to see .3-.5 PH increase with a reasonable amount of Kalk dosing. 2 part offers negligible ph increase if you use sodium carbonate, and a ph decrease if you use sodium bicarbonate for the Alk component.
