Hey Dan Can't seem to answer your Q on the Muriwai vid so thought would try come through here for ya - I don't fish that bottom end of Muriwai so unsure if it would hold fish but I can't see why not but the further you go the better it will be. We drive a good 15-20ks up the beach to surfcast. Tight lines

Cheers MT Let me know how you go - fishing around the rough can be difficult but the more you do it the better you become at it and know when to change your rigs up - just remember the more kelpy/rocky it is the less weight you want to use and leaving the bait until it's hit or know when it's gone. The more you move it about, wind in and chuck out the more chance of getting fouled up.... Tight lines

Hi BM Those magic hours are just before dark and just before light - I like to get to a spot 2-3hrs before hand to get the sent of my bait out there - this helps like a little berley. Most times I use just enough weight to get a little further out but if no wind and fish are in close I drop down to a floating bait (no sinker) If you are talking about an actual float that can work as well in the shallows and the weight of your float can aid in a bit more distance... Cheers g777 I haven't surfcast up that ways for a long time but never rule out if a spot is to shallow. Your better chance will be the Northern end around the rocks or even Hatties. There are a lot of places to fish with in 10-15mins of Orewa. If you want to surfcast the beach have a go on the dead low and just before dark or just before light. Best time is just after an Easterly blow or you can even try a fish during the day when overcast with a bit of a swell running (light on-shores) etc. Being all stired up will help a lot and over cast with late evening / early morning being those magic hours. Try around that Nov - Mar and don't give up if you get nothing the first few times. It's not to say you will catch fish there but you will raise the odds if you fish certain times, when people fish a spot and get nothing they very rarely keep trying it. Just like fishing in the boat one day they are there the next day there not. People catch fish on the Kontiki etc which tells you there is fish there but how close in you won't know until you try. Summer months put a wettie on wade out to waste deep just before dark on the dead low you may get a surprise? I have caught nice fish to 2-3kilo from the beach back in the early 90's but will be a lot harder in our days but you can't catch a fish if you ain't out there trying it... Tight lines

@@gregiscool777 Yea the beach can be a hard place to fish because of how shallow it can be and clear water etc, over populated areas with noise, pollution, shellfish gathering etc all play a big part - the fish can gather at a certain spot at a certain time. As said before try and fish them those magic hours and on the low - low allows you to get further out to where food would more likely be. Nearly all rocky outlets have everything there that fish eat, they can hide in the kelp and rocks etc even just fishing down the side of rocks where the sand meets can up your catch rate. Hatties is a lot more fishy even off the beach / fishing beside the rocks - go for a walk at dead low during the day to see where a nice spot is to cast to on the high. And low you can walk right out on the rocks etc. Unweighted baits is the way to go if you fish rocks. Did the Maxistrike vids for work and The Warehouse - great for new comers to the sport or just learning a little more knowledge. Tight lines

The first couple I just put into a bit of salt water while I gear up then keep taking a couple out as I fish. Just dip them in the salt water then leave on chilly lid. Sometimes I even just leave them in the chilly over night. Make bait cotton your best friend :-) Tight lines

If you are going to use the one reel then just braid it with 50lb - over heavy a little for Snaps but need at least that for Kings - If you have two reels spool your Snapper one with 20lb braid and your King one with 50-80lb

The old days and still now people fish with even there surf cast rods to 13ft off the rocks - there is really no rule, the length works well for getting the fish up and keep out of the weed / rocks etc and a longer rod helps with casting distance which most times off the rocks you don't need. For the past few years people are now fishing with heavier shorter rods and even just there standard 7ft heavy strayline rods. Some people like to use stick bait / popper rods around 8ft. 10ft is a nice length but going to even 12ft would be no problem at all.

Hi Ria - I have 25lb mono on that reel and 20lb braid on the other one I surfcast with out West. If you go heavy you will lose you distance, if your around rocks and need to fish heavy just use a little ball sinker if you can get away with it. If you want to fish floating baits try and stick under 30lb to get a bit of distance.

Being around the rough I use 25lb - if off the sand I go down as far as 15lb - the lighter you go the better casting distance you can get also, around the rocks I try to get away with no sinker then add a little ball sinker when needed.

Cheers - yes not good in places that are deep only ankle to Knee deep in front of me as this is dead low tide you can see the beach right next to me - the rock pool on the rocks is deeper..I would have to walk roughly 100mtrs out for it to be over my head.

REEL KIWI FISHING FISH WHISPERER yeah thought so, as a deckhand, they got us to jump in a pool, deep end, in our work clothes.....shook me, at what happened, we all drowned..divers on bottom brought us to surface...i went home and heat a coat hanger, made two holes above instep...sorted..foot keeps water out. Rocks and hunting, dive boots. Got a scupper Pro 30 yrs ago, never looked back..you are on to it..tight lines..
