Retro Repair Guy restores a vintage reel to reel tape recorder, the Sharp RD-715C from 1970. For this restoration, I replaced all the capacitors, cleaned the heads and the whole unit. This retro tape recorder is now ready for a new life.

Great video. I'm planning on restoring my Tandberg 64X R-T-R recorder I bought in 1968 and used continuously until I got into CDs in 1985. I think mine is tube-based. I hope I can find any if needed. I might also have to replace the 4 heads if needed and drive belts. It did have thousands of hours of use. I have prerecorded tapes, recorded tapes I made, and several new unused blank tapes in their wrappers. So, I have plenty to use to check it out. Right now it only turns on. You gave me some good tips. Thanks. Keep up the fantastic videos.

Hi I really appreciate the kind words. If ever the unit has tubes you can find them online however some can be quite expensive today since they are used in high end stuff mostly. However there is an online store www.thetubestore.com that has reasonable prices for many tubes but I have never purchased from there. If you have transistors you can't find, check out alltransistors.com they have a database that shows a list of replacements however be careful to check the spec sheets because some of the replacements match in specs but your original might have a Collector in the middle and the replacement does not making installation almost impossible. The best is the old ECG/NTE guides, those have it all. Either way double check everything but you can most likely replace the transistors with something else. Whenever you replace transistors you will have to adjust the bias so if you could get your hands on the service manual that would be the best. Good luck with the restoration!

Hi there! Where are you from? I'm in Canada and yes agree and eBay the shipping is often more than the item. There are many beautiful old things at these stores. In my city there are three different ones but one of the big popular ones with many stores was bought by Walmart and they tripled the price on everything while receiving all donations for free. Leave it to them to have corrupted a good thing. However this particular Reel to Reel player my wife picked up for $20 from someone selling locally that she found from a Facebook group . You could try there and see if people around want to sell old things for a few dollars or put an add or do you have garage sales? I also go in the summer to those.

Excellent video! I have a Teac 330010, I notice sometimes the tape slips off the pinch roll, I stop the deck at start it back up and it works. I was wonder what would make it slip off the pinch roller in-ward toward the deck? I notice it does the same thing on my Pioneer RT 701 deck too once in a while. The pinch rollers don't look that bad. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you. Unless the whole mechanism, was warped the only reason for a pinch roller to slip is that it's old and worn out. The first thing to try is like what I did in the video and clean it with Rubber Renue from MG Chemicals. On this unit I cleaned it a few times. The trick is for it to feel like rubber to your finger and hard to slip your finger over it. You need to really rub it in (by the way smells strong and stinks). If after 2-3 times the result is the same or still slipping then the pinch roller would need to be replaced. Unfortunately they are much harder to source these days but you can buy several sizes from sites like Aliexpress. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@@RetroRepairGuy Thanks for the welcome! Your channel is of particular interest to me because I was a concert taper in the late 1960s early 1970s. I hadn't realized the historic value of my small collection until someone clued me in. @@dianestrauss9699 Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it and happy you found the channel. Interesting work, did you also travel with bands? I saw a few people on KZbin restore stuff, and not to boast, but I did not see anyone take them apart like I do and recap everything and throw boards in the dishwasher. I've had what I call "an illness" since a very young age where I only wanted to get old things and restore them (including my first bike, car, house). I'm also happy because you can see and appreciate the hard work as opposed to a comment I received recently specifically for this video and unit where someone told me I was wasting my time and ended up being quite nasty. Feel free to drop a comment any time. I always answer everyone even if it takes me a day or two.

@@RetroRepairGuy It's absolutely worth your time and effort to refurbish and restore these vintage machines. Without the machines themselves, vintage tapes cannot be read. For printed items like newspapers and photographs, we can hold them in our hands and view the material without anything extra. But with machine-read media of any type, you need the machine to resource the information on them. This will be more of a problem as time goes by, with information contained on obsolete computers, in obsolete formats, in obsolete programs. So keep doing your very important work! And yes, throwing parts in a bin of soapy water is an act of genius in my opinion! I found that portion of your video very amusing! No, I did not travel with bands. I was in my early and mid teens when I did most of my concert recording. It was just for my own use at the time. I had no idea these recordings were valuable until I spoke with a collector who nearly lost his mind when he heard I had recorded the Rolling Stones in 1969. Since then, I have released my recordings for free trade. The recordings have gone around the world now and that is not overstating it at all. Tens of thousands of downloads around the world. Take a look at my channel in the Live Audience Recordings section. Thanks for being there and performing your very important service! Keep on keeping on!

Some people is for sentimental reasons, others collect, etc. If you've recapped yourself, I'm sure you could perform anything other fix in the unit. Unfortunately, sending it courrier, insurance and then fixing it and ship it back would become very expensive and makes no sense. Just a friendly tip - when cleaning the solder side of a circuit board with isopropyl alcohol, it is often a good idea to allow to dry completely, then apply some form of *conformal coating* for true insulation purposes. Why? - well, esp if a circuit is very sensitive to low currents (as in high input impedance ccts), any stray potentials (and they do exist!) will unbalance a cct slightly because of surface micro-conduction, and in the case of an OP Amp (not here I know) - a lot of imbalances! ;o) Regards.

@@RetroRepairGuy This 'micro-conduction' will occur when debris exists with tiny amounts of moisure, not to mention micro traces of various salts. Salts in water are electrolytes - they are conductive ions. I have monitored this by working on circuits 'live' and observing the circuit becoming slightly unbalanced or noisey by the presence of my breath! And by that I don't mean breathing all over it. @@TheHuntermj I would definitely replace the caps in the power supply to avoid anything else blowing because it's now 54 years old which is way past the caps life expectancy of 15-20. However for your speed problem I was thinking a couple of things off the top of my head: Did you replace the belt? If not, did anyone else and did they put the correct one? It could also just be an adjustment since it is over fifty years old. I quickly checked the manual and the tape speed says to refer to the regulator on board 7.077.725 and it also states that the playback adjustment needs to be 21V which is set from the power supply card 1.077.540. So this comes back to my replacing of caps in the power supply. I would change them before making the adjustment. It could be giving out the wrong voltage. Check that voltage regulator and also did you clean the pinch roller? You can grab the service manual online here www.manualslib.com/manual/899158/Revox-A77.html#manual Check pages 26 and 27 (of the manual not the PDF) and Diagram 2. Let me know what happens.

@@RetroRepairGuy The roller is slightly perished, I'll see if I can buy something to restore it. No belts in the machine so all good on that front. Good info thanks...I do have a couple suggestions if that's ok. Instead of showing you cleaning it which most people who are watching this niche vid already know how. You then go on talking bout the different belts but you're not showing any visuals. How the guts work is what people are watching for and would be super helpful if it was shown hands on and how the gears move. Cut out the screws n putting it back together and show us the mechanical side. Thanks man you're a great help. Ps....please turn down the music or just get rid of it all together. Trust me your viewers will double

Why not use 7.5?
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Only because I had done the tests, filmed and edited and realized I had not recorded in 7.5. However with this old tape and horrible built in speakers it would not have made a difference. I plugged the unit into an amp and it sounded so much better already. I wanted to purchase tape for it but only found on eBay for a ridiculous price so I did not buy it. Thanks for watching!

Hi Larry. Sorry I am confused, is this a statement or a question? I know sometimes we write fast and thinking something else. If you are asking could you please give me a little more details like model and if you hear the channel at all or is it completely silent, etc. I would be glad to try to help you out. Meanwhile thanks so much for watching!

@@RetroRepairGuy a statment but i wondered if you were familiar with any magnavox or panasonic reel to reel from the late 60's and early 70's
@RetroRepairGuy
@RetroRepairGuy 2 жыл бұрын
@@larryshaver3568Hi again Larry. I worked on a few in the 90s but they are no different than any tape decks really and I've repaired my fair share of those. The reel to reel weren't as popular or breaking down as much. When it comes to fixing, electronics is electronics, however over email or comments I can only try to guide and guess because I don't have the unit in front of me.
