Richard Sanfield was born in 1937 to Janie Massey and Robert Sanfield. After four years in the US Air Force he was honorably discharged in Los Angeles in 1958. In 1967 he saw a ventriloquist in a nightclub and decided to give it a try. As "Richard and Willie" he recorded five LPs for Dooto Records and seven for Laff Records. He worked the Apollo Theater and many other venues with artists such as Nancy Wilson, Cannonball and Roberta Flack. Sanfield retired Richard and Willie in 1992 and is living California.

This was an underground album when I was a little kid. Had listen to it in disco headphones so no one could hear it. 😂

Wow! Just listening to this now! I'd first heard this when it first came out in 1980 or '81. And tonight is the first time, since 1982, that I'd listen to it. Thank you so much!

You're talking about artists whose albums I had in the 70s, many of them on LAFF Records. Good times.

Thank you, I've just was wondering what happened to Richard and Willie. 40 plus years later, if he updated a couple names, and still be relevant.

On the back of the album Richard explains that he meant for this to be a tribute to Richard Pryor. He said “only did i know that Mr. Pryor would fully recover that i decided to make this album” kinda weird cuz he’s bustin his chops and makin jokes at his expense. Not my idea of a tribute. I think the album cover was in bad taste too. However, I’m glad i get to hear this for the first time.

Put things into context. This was recorded and released right after Pryor got outta the hospital after the fire. I first heard it myself around ‘82 (as a kid). Yes, he’s having some fun at Pryor’s expense, but make no mistake that this guy was a friend of Pryor. The one thing that’s always stood out to me about this album was the whole “leave the drugs alone” message. Crass it may be, but the stance is very clear. Richard (and Willie) was definitely concerned for Pryor’s well-being and was hoping his friend would be able to turn a corner with regard to his demons. After all, it had almost killed him. I’m sure Pryor was all right with it. Besides Pryor used the fire for a great deal of content in his OWN act for years to come. He was always his own favorite target.
