Actually, he did not "shed" his "gayness". He loved God, but he went through a hard time reconciling himself, as many gay southern men did brought up in the church. He said he went a bit overboard thinking after his rededication he could turn off the gayness through God's help. Later, he realized God made him perfectly, gay and all.

I remember the 1st time I ever saw this man, it was on Sesame Street. I was captivated by his "Woooooo" and I loved him. I also remember seeing the movie about him when I was much older. It was the best when he out sang Pat Boone. Idk how true the movie was, but it opened my eyes to how ppl treated folks like himself. He never let them keep him down, but he got caught up for sure. Always, he was optimistic and found his way.
