Yes, Soren was in danger (great danger, I assume). It's the second time they hint it. During season 4, Claudia says to him that without dark magic he wouldn't be alive and Soren stops arguing with her immediately. Definitely Viren did something really dark to save him... and probably had to sacrifice a lot of his own soul to do it. Maybe that's why Aaravos said "the failed son whose father wishes he had never been born". Maybe without Soren Viren wouldn't have had to sacrifice this much of his soul.

This episode had me on the edge of my seat, constantly yelling about what Viren was dreaming about.

I thought the parallels between Viren's dream and the real world were so chilling, and so well done. I think it also paints an interesting picture of Viren --- presenting him as someone who at one point WAS a loving father who would have done anything to protect his family, but who was corrupted over years and years of using dark magic and accumulating power. I'm quite sure it was confirmed somewhere, but I don't remember where, that Viren saved Soren from death with dark magic as a child. And I have to think that perhaps the reason Viren was so disappointed in Soren was not only because Claudia had an aptitude for magic that Soren did not, but because Soren actually feared and was repulsed by dark magic --- and that ultimately created a wedge. Based on what we see in this episode, it certainly seems like Viren does genuinely love his children as much as he's capable of loving anyone... yet he has continually put his own agendas ahead of them and used them to pursue his own selfish desires. And now he sees how that behavior has driven his son away from him and driven his daughter down a dangerous path. Personally I think it's some of the best character exploration we've seen on the show in quite some time.

Yes I loved the parallels and the dream sequences themselves and I'm so happy they explored Viren's character as deeply as they did. He's a very well written character in my opinion and he's becoming a favourite character of mine to some extent now. This season really made me feel bad for him 😭

Out of the three episodes so far, this one is definitely my favorite. The dream sequences with Viren are absolutely phenomenal and really dives into the complexity and delusions of his character. Callum finding out Amaya and Janai's engagement was amazing and really sweet. The subplot of Prince Karim is really intriguing as well.

5:58 From what I've heard, Soren had a fatal illness when he was a kid and Viren used Dark Magic to cure him. Judging from how distraught Viren was and how he said he'd do anything to save his son, I think Soren's sickness either caused him to go further with Dark Magic than ever before (likely involving human sacrifices) or the sickness is what caused Viren study Dark Magic in the first place and up until that point, he only ever used primal magic via the lightning magic orb Callum had in season 1 or similar magic items.

The way the episode starts are very similar to how episode 1 of season one starts, with some small changes. What I think of is the shot of Zym 2:33 flying over the river and when flies up to the eye of Zubeia 2:40, quickly followed by a wideshot of them flying together is shot the same as that start. Just replace Zym with the magical birds and Zubeia with Sol Regem. That is some ominous foreshadowing. 4:23 The fact that we saw this from Janai's sister's point of view makes this extra scary.

The Dragon Prince novelizations confirmed that when Soren was a born a really sickly kid, and nearly died around the time before Ezra’s was born. Viren was able to save him, but only by performing a spell so vile that his mentor had to stop him. This is also how he discovered how to use butterflies to restore his appearance. It’s also what lead to him and his wife divorcing, as what he did disgusted even her. Claudia also witnessed this, and I think this is part of the reason she still clings to the idea that her father only wants what’s best for the world, even if it seems terrible. There’s a short story on the Dragon Prince website titled “Strangers” that goes into some of this backstory, as well as showing a scene between Viren and Soren during the time in season 4 when he was kidnapped.

From what I read (in season 4 Claudia also hinted to this as well when she told Soren "without dark magic he would not been alive"), when Soren was little, he was sick. So Viren used dark magic to heal him.....and that was the reason his wife left him and stuff.

I'm actually liking your reactions, not a great reactions guy myself. I like you're transparent about your likes and dislikes, like Rayllum, but I'm one of those guys missing an apology from her. Like c'mon, girl. He leapt out of the highest peak, uttered magic words after "I love you", and swoop down to catch you, showing he never skips neck day... and then TTM. Callum is doing his part, though, and Rayla feels more like herself this season, so a funny badass. Still waiting that apology though, like "sorry for leaving you on your birthday, lying about going somewhere with you I just didn't, then two years silent and returning like nothing happened" Now you trust me no matter what? why? Hoooowever, she didn't have to feel that lonely in S4, really felt for her. Like if I were Callum, I'd do like Bow did at some specific point after the thing, but before the big one. Soren even called her out.

Wow that Episode was mind blown Phantos the high priest was banished too I wonder what he did to Jinni or her sister hmm. When I saw the canyons my first thought was Sol regnum. Also I liked that they showed young Sorin and young Claudia and its true Claudia is turning into her father possibly worse and powerful than her father it could be possible. I liked Rayla and Callum talking about the battle they went threw back in season 3. The cherry on top no mater how dangerous the journey is you cant talk Callum or Rayla out of it they will always jump in danger in order to save the world.

Episode 3 was a really good episode. It also had my personal favorite Rayllum moment of the entire show ( the plotting in the tent scene) virens entire dream sequence will also always be interesting to watch.
