Also, She actually wanted to include the lightning in the movie, but was told it was too unrealistic. Despite that being what actually happened in real life. So they changed it to the swing rope snapping thing.

Yes, this film was dubbed. Good catch. It was filmed in New Zealand and some of the local actors ended up having to have their lines dubbed. It's also why you didn't recognize the animal Jess let out of the cage- it's an animal that doesn't live in North America. It's a type of possum!

A really great adaptation of an excellent book. As other commenters have pointed out, the book is loosely based on the author's son losing his best friend as a child. It's such an important book that does a great job of introducing children to grief. I've read this book so many times. It's a classic for a reason.

Still remember reading this in the 5th grade in 2001. I'm an adult in my 30's now who doesn't read books anymore, mainly manga, LNs, but this book left a long lasting impression. I still remember the faces of a few of the girls in my class who cried. The twist comes out of nowhere and you were just shocked. I didn't know it but some of them read ahead. We would only read at least 1 chapter every week together, review and discuss things. I was shocked and upset. I hadn't experienced losing someone, but this book was to teach children that loss is real and how you dealt with it going forward. Having experiencing losing someone, you never ever feel the same again. Just a lot of pain and guilt. You just have this big hole in your heart with a ton of regrets of what you didn't do more together. Time does heal but you just wish you had more time together. Looking back, I appreciate the efforts of my teachers.

This movie never fails to make me cry 💔😭 But always good to be reminded just what a phenomenal child actor Josh Hutcherson was! He was also great in Zathura and Journey to the Center of the Earth. AnnaSophia Robb WAS in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, she played Violet. Fun fact: She sings a song in the ending credits called Keep Your Mind Wide Open. But yeah, the teacher thing is a bit weird and mainly because, if you flipped the genders, most people would have an obvious reaction to that, but somehow it doesn't feel as creepy here? 🤷🏼‍♀️

ahh, this movie came out in my 6th grade, and our class read the book and then went on a field trip to see the movie in theaters. i remember really appreciating the mature subject matter at the time, even if it was heartbreaking in both novel and film form. iirc in the book jesse does consider inviting leslie on the trip to the museum with their teacher- so that was a big factor of regret for him.

I think I had read the book in school a year or so before the film came out so I was prepared for the ending, but when the film did come out I was a peer of Jess and Leslie (though slightly younger than the actors), and it still hit hard, and is pretty significant when I think of JH or ASR's filmographies (Bailee Madison too). I was also really tickled that Leslie's dad was played by an actor I recognized from "Power Rangers: Dino Thunder". For all that Jess's dad isn't great through much of the beginning, the book was written in 1979 for a rural, really "conservative" (in the sense of expectations of boys do x, girls do y) setting (and a family that is economically really challenged), and even when this came out in 2007 there was real truth to the substance of the expectations Jess was struggling with- he didn't get to be into art, he had certain expectations placed on him as the only son, and yet Leslie helped set him on a path to being more of himself outwardly, and others knowing and accepting that. For all that his dad's attitude is an obstacle for Jess in the beginning, both characters are allowed to have really meaningful character arcs (as are the others surrounding them). In terms of similar media (beside just the fact that the novel itself invoked Narnia), the films "My Girl" and "The Man in the Moon" (both released in 1991) are likely pretty devastating "kids" films dealing with death. I never saw either in full, but my younger sister was devastated by the former and my older sister obsessed with the latter.

Sometimes I miss those days we played Robin Hood in the forest or Star Wars at school recess. That age is magical.

I had to read this in fifth grade and several years later for a course on banned books. I thought this was a good adaptation and that the dog playing Prince Terrien was cute.
