This is probably the most powerful gospel version of They'll Know We Are Christians (aka, We Are One In The Spirit). Both solo singers are absolutely superb. Walt Whitman did a wonderful job of rearranging the words and music into the gospel style. The Soul Children of Chicago is probably the greatest youth choir since the Little Angels choir of the 1950s. Written by Peter R. Scholtes during the catholic folk mass era, "They'll Know We Are Christians" was first published in 1966 by F.E.L. Publications Ltd (no longer in business). The album, "They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love" was published by F.E.L. in 1968.The songs now belong to Lorenz Publishing. When Peter Scholtes wrote “They'll Know We Are Christians” he was a catholic priest at Saint Brendan's parish in Chicago's West Englewood community. Saint Brendan is now a senior living facility run by catholic charities. The Saint Brendan's Young People's Choir (also African Americans) traveled extensively nationwide singing this song and the popular yet controversial Missa Bossa Nova catholic mass which was also written by Peter. The Saint Brendan's Young People's Choir, due to contractual issues never recorded the title song but did record most of the tracks on the album. The mass of 67th street which is also on the album, refers to the street where the Saint Brendan Church was located. The album to some degree sounds unpolished, but it was recorded at the now defunct Boulevard Recording Studios in Chicago. The title song “They'll know We Are Christians” is simple yet compelling and powerful in it's message. They'll Know We Are Christians (aka, We Are One In The Spirit) is still popular today world wide. There are versions in many languages, many styles of music (from urban to classical) and has been covered by numerous recording artists.
