I picked up a very used Cold Steel shovel for $2.00 at a yard sale. The varnish was flaking off the wood, so I scraped and sanded it clean, then applied a Finnish gunstock finish: 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine, 1/3 beeswax. It's tough, repels water, and doesn't crack with age.

I finally took the plunge when the 30” came out. I new I was going to thin the handle a bit for my grip so I just used the back of my knife and scraped the factory varnish off. Used the same palm sander to shape the handle and even flattened out one side a bit so I can index the shovel head with looking at it. The blade cuts differently on either side, like a chisel ground blade. Personally I use wax on all my woodworking / furniture. Nice thing is we can all have our favorites. Thinking of having, or wanting to replace the handle in the bush I removed the screws and installed through bolts with knurled “nuts” so I can remove the handle without a Phillips bit.

Truth be told: I've used my battleaxe as a shovel, from time to time. It's a Dane Axe replica, with a slightly shorter handle, to fit on my pack. Had it made just before deployment to Sarajevo. Broken the handle twice (insisting on it being made from ash...).

I have loved my CS shovel for years but I haven't given mine this much love......yet! I have also recently acquired an actual Russian from 1984 and the difference is pretty interesting. People seem to forget that the Russians stamped out millions of these for decades at a very low cost. The Russian is still a pretty awesome little shovel but no way it can survive the abuse the CS can.
