Thanks Barry. Great video. Looking forward to the next installment. Clutch in my 996 is at the end of the adjustable range now so clutch plates and bearing will have to be replaced down the line. Will definitely be rewatching this video beforehand! Will be great to have quality content like this as a reassuring guide! 🙂

The seperator plate springs should be fitted totally dry! As the clutch dust will stick to springs and make them stick in the holes in the flywheel. I,m an old DB mechanic so i know .

Many thanks for that, the oil on the springs was so small that it didn;t even dirty my fingers when I put them in, but I can see where your coming from and thanks for the comments and for taking the time to view, it's very much appreciated Barry

Great videos Barry , the new plate thickness would be 11inch---0.353ins , 10inch ---0.320 ins , probably already know that now , but just watched your video recently enquiring about thickness..

Cheers Wullie, I've replaced the plates now but I will check the original ones as we still have them, when the new ones arrived I was suprised that there wasn't that much difference in thickness. thanks for watching Barry

Hi, I own a 1967 Selectamatic 880 that I'm restoring right now. I was wondering since you seem to know those tractors (David Brown) very well. I experienced that final drives are very noisy. That's what can be hear when the tractor is engaged to speed. Course there's always a bit coming from the transmission but all these gears turning in the final drive housing (with all their bearings) is a weak spot on David Brown. The older and miss servicing, the more it's making noise I suppose. At least to my point of view. Would you say that changing all final drive bearings can help ? Or it's useless since gears are worn anyway and that doesn't change a thing at the end. Is noise coming from worn gears or bearings ? Thanks for answering.

Hi Luc, I would remove and disassemble both final drives and check the bearings,it looks way more fightening than it really is and the grief you could save yourself from a collapsed bearing breaking gears and casting could be worth it. At the very least you get to see what condition your pinion shaft and reduction gears are in. All the parts are readily available and not as expensive as trying to source a repalcement casting, just think of all the fun your going to have. keep us up todaste with your decissions Many thanks Barry

@@manfromthemist1958 Hi Barry. It seems pretty easy for you to do things on video. What I fear the most is to get the press fit brake drum out of the axle. Oil seals need to be replace too. I liked the video showing how you're doing it. Pretty simple and it does the job pretty quickly. What do you think of David Brown tractors in general ? I live in province of Quebec - Canada. Far East on the sea. When I was young, there were more farmers in my area. Some had DBs, some MF, some Ford (made in England) and some IH. There was no John Deere dealer nearby. The bigger DBs were 995. The smaller were 880-885. David Brown's sound was hitting me the most. They were consider as very good tractors... except for the rear hydraulic system. Course, nobody was taking good care of their tractors 50 years ago. The were letting them outside all year long. Mine is sleeping in a garage 365 a year ! Even my car doesn't get that kind of VIP treatment. Cheers !

Hi Luc, Removing the drum is probablty the hardest part of the job they either come off relativley easy or they're a chew, As far a DB tractors are concerned I knew nothing about them at all untill I bought it, I eas really looking for a MF tef to rebuild but due to covid could get to Wales where there was a reasonable one, so I bough this DB from a young man in Carlisle, and when I started taking it to pieces found it hadn't been loved at all, I do love my DB and like yours mine lives inside and when finished will continue to live inside wrapped up in blankets to keep her warm, i keep trying to get pieces of her into the house but get rumbled by Debs and relegated back to the garage. hey ho, you have to have a go at getting the drums off and if you get stuck there's absolutley no shame in asking a local garage or enginnering shop for help, I find a lot of these will help at low rates as they understand your not commercial and as engineers we all understand the importance of keeping the past alive. After all it's because of the past we arrived here today keep us informed of your progress, many thanks barry @@lucgagnon5241

@@manfromthemist1958 Thanks for answering Barry. I'll give it a thought. I tried what you told me. I went to a garage and asked them to put new bearings in one of final drive. The "son" (father and son of a) told me to put oil in it and laught in my face in the same time. I'd say that in the area, nobody wants to work on 50 years old farm tractors. That's why I'm only trusting one person : me !

Hi Luc, sorry to hear about your experience, i think what the person was really trying to say was his skill level didn't reach that high and he was incapable of the task.@@lucgagnon5241
