Hey man. I have not watched this video, but just popped over here after starting the Lost in Roshar Podcast where you were not the co-host. I want to express to you that I found a lot of value in several of your comments reading through Stormlight again. The things you noticed about the writing are generally not typically points expressed. I think your lack of ability to visualize makes you notice certain aspects of the literary structure that I personally do not see. The things that “pull you out” of the stories are legitimate criticisms, but I never thought too much about. This kind of commentary that you made really helped me develop my eye for literature and my mind for writing in a noticeable way. The Dark Star series is absolutely fantastic. I think it is worth the challenge of reading and is meant to be reread. It is refreshing to see a “ literary” author take fantasy seriously and push the boundaries of the form , giving us a work worthy of literary appreciation. The Failures is also on my radar, I think it popped up as a recommendation on Goodreads (one of the few times this function has been useful in years.) William Gibson, surprisingly, is one of the most under-talked prose stylists out there though I would say his real style only kicks in after Neuromancer. It reminds me most of James Elroy's 90 output where it's extremely brief, intentionally choppy, with slang etc. put in even third person description and similarly can be tough to wrap your head around at times. i.e. in his novel Count Zero, he introduces one of the main characters, has him blown up by a drone, then rebuilt over months in about 7 pages. All of the books you talked about sound really interesting. The only thing I can suggest to salvage the Kushiel's Dart vlog is to do some sprints around the house then grab the camera and re-record before you can fully catch your breath so you can capture the off the cuff energy of reacting for the first time.

Strongly recommend In Ascension by Martin McInnes. Just won the Clarke award. Longlisted for the booker award. TBH i enjoyed it more than the winner, Prophet Song

I recently did a tally of all the books I have on my shelf I haven't read and decided not to buy another book until I finish them or DNF them. I gladly report that I went for 2 whole weeks before buying a book😅

I overdosed on fantasy years ago and now like to mix it up with sci-fi, mystery, classics. Yet I still consider myself a fantasy reader. Looking forward to your opinion on those 3 books you mentioned as they sound like things I would like. P.S. I must be the only one who doesn't care about the next Sanderson book, which might change once I get around to reading Way of Kings. Or might not. 😊

Neuromancer is so good! I hope you like it. Wind and Truth better be good🥲. The second half of 2024 is gonna be awesome. I have 12 Glen Cook novels left and I will be done with his bibliography. The Starfishers trilogy has started off great and I might read book two and three this weekend. I'm looking forward to the rest of 2024!

Mood reading can be hit or miss. Did read some McMaster-Bujold and really liked them. Currently reading David Keck that was on APs shelf on some older videos. Liking those as well - Arthur vibes with tournaments and haunted kingdoms. Neuromancer might be a little dated but he should be getting royalties for the Matrix movies. Have read Stephenson and Anathem is on my shelf. He can be a good qritwr but can get too cute and self-indulgent at times.

In the end, if you are reader, do you ever stick to a single genre? I don't think so. We are readers. We do have favorites genres for sure. Fantasy is my favorite, but I read everything. Granted, I think I have been a reader longer than you as it is a newer hobby for you.

@@skippen to me it seems obvious consistent readers would broaden their horizons but alas it’s not always the case
