You're a lucky man. I think Gene reminded everyone of their gramps in some way. That's one reason he was so popular even among the young audiences. You wouldn't see that today. The younger generation are for the younger guys. Maybe if they had a Mean Gene it would be different.

I barely watched wrestling, but I could listen to Mean Gene tell stories about the glory days of WRASTLIN’ all day long. Fantastic voice, genuine seeming dude, and an eloquent speaker. Absolute legend. RIP

Mean Gene is one of those people that has been almost everpresent in the wrestling world from the 80s until at least 2007 (I stopped watching WWE programming around that time) and it's interesting to see he still has a role in the company. He can get a great interview out of anyone; best of all time in his role!

Mixed feelings watching this... On the one hand, I was born in 1981. I grew up in that era of Golden Age WWF. Mean Gene is almost as familiar as the voices of my own parents. Mean Gene and and John Madden/Pat Summerall, basically were the voices of our childhood. I miss all of it... But the good part is that we had Gene for a long time. We got to hear these stories about what was really going on because when I was growing up, we didn't have the internet at that time. We couldn't just go look it up. Everything was a bit of a mystery and you just... you just loved it. You and your friends loved the narratives and the gimmicks, and sadly because of the online world, we can never go back to that.

Poor gene has serious swelling on that left ankle. He had heart issues is guess. He was the best part of the old WWF he framed shit so well and was so captivating. He was a character like all the wrestlers, no announcer/commentator will be remembered as fondly as mean gene.

My theory is that WWF (I'm old school with the name) personalities age faster - twice as fast - as sports heroes and show biz celebrities. I look back at all the wrestlers who were da bomb 35 years ago, and most of them are dead. Most baseball players from that time are still around. Most movie stars. Most rock stars. Not wrestlers. And by wrestlers, I mean wrestling "managers" and commentators too. In 1985, If you would've told me that inside of 35 years, Piper, Heenan, Okerlund, Savage, Snuka, Albano, Blassie, Monsoon, Fuji, Andre the Giant, Adonis, and many more would be dead and buried, I'd have thought you were nuts. These guys entertained the hell out of so many millions of people. I never cared too much for the actual wrestling. For me, the attraction was the story lines. I rooted for the heels because they were so goddamn funny. They had a sense of humor. The faces didn't. I did root for Tito Santana, though. He gave his all. He did the most with his size. But I digress...

This guy needs to do his research. That Russian guy was going to wrestle Hogan when he got to WCW!!!! He was an amateur and was thinking of turning pro. They were going to have 3 matches one in the USA, one in Russia and one on neutral ground. That was supposed to happen in 1994! Not 1983! Bischoff nixed the idea and fired Greg Gagne and that was that. Nobody does their homework or knows what the hell they are talking about and that goes for Feinstein too.
@battlegroundwrestling40267 жыл бұрын
Hey Fred, I'm "this guy". That was the story word for word as told to me by Greg Gagne and that's why I wanted to get Gene's reaction, Greg Gagne himself told me that idea was meant to keep Hogan in the AWA. Thanks for your input though. Check out Battleground Championship Wrestling August 19th in Fairless Hills PA

Wrestling in my opinion had very few announcers, interviewers, and voice's of the sport. My top picks are Gordon Solie, Mean Gene Oakerlund, Gorilla Monsoon, and Jim Ross. RIP Mean Gene, Gorilla Monsoon, and Gordon Solie you are all seriously missed, without you wrestling is not as exciting.

As much as I love Gene I lost more respect for him on this video than ever before. How can he praise a pat Patterson contract for life and say he deserves it for all the money he made Vince. What about the other stuff he did. Crazy he pretends to care about Piper yet takes that stance.
