The Tory leadership contest is likely to heat up with more contenders expected to join Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly in the race.
Shadow security minister Mr Tugendhat launched his campaign by indicating he would be prepared to leave the European Convention on Human Rights if it was necessary to secure the UK’s borders.
The battle for the future of the Conservative Party officially began on Wednesday night with the opening of nominations in the contest to replace Rishi Sunak following the Tories’ worst general election result.
A long and potentially divisive campaign will eventually produce a winner on November 2.
Political commentator Theo Usherwood says Reform UK MPs have told him they want Tom Tugendhat to be the new Tory leader, as "he's much of the same".
"There may be scepticism he's too close to Keir Starmer... it leaves a lot of room for Nigel Farage and Reform!"

None of the Reform MP's bothered to vote at their first opportunity. They claimed they couldn't work out how to vote but surely experienced MP Lee Anderson could have instructed them. The hundreds of other new MP's managed to vote just fine

My guess is the conservative members want Braverman as leader. The conservative MP's don't want her so she won't be one of the two choices the members are given. Therefore if the members want to support conservative values they need to join Reform and allow the wokists to join their friends in the Liberal and Labour parties, they can then preach about being in the centre wilst disappearing down the plug hole of politics.

Leaving the ECHR is pointless, we'll still be in the UN so still bound by the UN convention for refugees. The ECHR hasn't actually prevented anything so far, it's been British courts that stopped the Rwanda scheme based on non compliance with the UN convention. Conservatives have wanted to leave the ECHR for decades because their donors don't like the employment rights that it provides. A question to be asked though is do you trust either Labour, Reform or Conservatives to maintain all YOUR rights as they re-write them in to British law? I don't
@Bluejohn

Labour and Conservatives have had their chance but Reform have not. So I think we should wait to see if they can be trusted before we lump them in with Labour and the Tories. Its the ECHR who have prevented murderers, rapists and violent criminals from being deported because it would infringe their "human rights", while disregarding the victims. It's not all about refugees and employment rights.

Australia isn't in ECHR but is bound by the UN Convention for refugees. They have an excellent immigration and migration points-based policy. I should also point out all of the other countries that aren't in the ECHR who let no one into their countries, but I would be here all day.

@@ruthcollins2841 Tens of thousands a year were deported before we left the EU. We also had the advantage of processing refugees in France so those rejected (roughly 30% were) didn't need to be deported because they hadn't arrived. France offered to allow this to start again but for some reason Boris refused

@@6chhelipilot The ECHR isn't preventing a points based immigration system. Our government actually started this but did it badly. The ECHR also doesn't prevent deportation of rejected refugee applicants, again it's our government's failure to actually process them and accept/reject them which keeps them sat in hotels

It is wrong to say that the ECHR haven’t prevented anything so far. Back in June 2022 their ruling prevented a flight to Rwanda and the subsequent removal of 7 illegals.
