To put that £12 billion Ukraine gift into perspective it only costs £1.05 billion per year to give our old people the winter fuel grant which was withdrawn by Starmer as “unaffordable “ . I’m one of those old people and paid my taxes for over 50 years… I now wear puffa jacket and ski hat indoors when at home … seriously can’t afford the absurd energy costs.

Starmer is a shop window mannequin. The Labour Party is a self serving North London chattering class network (forget the 'working class' tag) that has distain for the mass of the British people living in the hinterland of the island. Note, i deeply dislike the Labour Party. It patronises the British people, and seeks to continue to imprison them in an outmoded working class construct while simultaineously tittering and scoffing at them behind their veiling hands. The Conservatives are as bad for different reasons. The British state is obsessed with Russia as the overthrow of Moscow would be the single sweeping solution for its financial problems and allow it to forego the present need for fundamental structural changes to the way Britain functions, which would be dangerous for the security and continued privileges of the ruling elite. 'Unfortunately' Moscow isn't willing to provide that solution. Good for Moscow.

I already pay around 70% of my income in taxes in some form or another, at what point does this just become Communism? 67% of those employed in Wales are employed by the state, and we have a higher GDP % earned from state owned interests than the USSR had.

Well I'll join your club here in Germany. Our tax bill is well beyond 60% all told and I've asked myself that question several times already. Apropos the percentage of non-state-owned GDP in the USSR: I thought the USSR only had state-owned businesses. How do you get to 33% private businesses in the USSR (ie. 100% - 67%)?

Why do you believe high taxes are about Communism? Or Socialism? The difference with Corporate Capitalism isn't how much tax you pay it is how it is spent. Do you give it to the Super Rich who leave it idle or do you give it to the Population who will benefit and spend it on economic growth? Compare the predicament of the voter in USA with more enlightened countries.

My only worries are a) they will remain committed to a Thatcherite free market ideology (there is space for freeing things up but we also need state intervention in many areas). b) they won’t go far enough with regards to deporting people and remaining firmly within the liberal frame they will be unable to reverse the demographic oblivion of the English people
