The distance between earth and sun is not constant due to fact that planet revolve around the sun in a elliptical orbit and not in a circular orbit so distance varies.

However, let me try to answer this The elliptical orbit doesn't change because all the planets in the solar system are influenced by attractive gravitational forces ( by the planets and sun itself) this makes the path same(elliptical) and this elliptical path may be formed due to arrangement of the planets and sun in the solar system..
