Brother MFC-J4510DW: How to Clear the Ink Absorber Full Message/Error

In this tutorial we show you how to reset the purge counter on a Brother MFC-J4510DW. This is commonly used to resolve the "Ink Absorber Full" or "Ink Absorber Almost Full' message/error on the Brother MFC-J4510DW.
Whilst this reset has been performed on a Brother MFC-J4510DW, this procedure can be performed on many other Brother inkjet printers with a touchscreen display. If it worked for you, please let us know in a comment below.

Works for J47 too. The only difference is that instead of showing "Maintenance" 2 times, it showed "Error ##" (forgot the numbers), but I just went ahead with the next entries and it worked like a charm. @@dengordo My printer worked for over 9 months after first reset. Today I got the 'ink absorber full' message again. I went through the same procedure, and it reset. However this time it does say 'ink absorber near full,' so I probably won't get as much printing out of it this time.

Thanks for sharing this excellent guidance. It does work, but only for so many times, as effectively what you are telling and trying to trick the printer into thinking that the ink absorber pad isn’t full, but in reality it is, and somehow the software has other means of determining you are trying to cheat it. My printer is coming up for 10 years old soon,and despite it’s had its quirks and drove me nuts at times with its random operation and going offline for no apparent reason necessitating a long winded reboot process, overall I can’t complain too much that I haven’t had my money’s worth from the old gal!

Useful note for anyone who reads this. Brother printers clean the print heads every night if you leave it plugged in which uses up ink.

Thanks for the video. This method worked for a few months but still put up an error message that could be cleared by the X button which would allow printing. This continued even after removing and cleaning the ink absorber pads. Eventually the printer would not print at all, putting a ! indication on the front panel. At this point I went further down the 'ink' maintenance list and found a MACHINE ERR_1:46 message. Entering 2783 to clear this message appeared to clear the error and permitted printing again. I don't know how long this will work for but may help other users!

This worked for an MFC j4310dw but it still says ink absorber near full, and I had to re-do it a couple months later when the purge counter was only at 198. Is there some other counter that needs to be reset?

Took out printer absorber tray. Cleaned all the pads. Dried off. Re-assembled. Still get the message. Purge: 0000 - tried a few times. The sensor is dry. Suspect there is a limit to how many times you can purge message.

Help! I don't have a purge count in my menu choices: I have reset count which 0000; Sen Purge 190; purge 06988; page 000026456. I've tried this code combo with all those setting and nothing is clearing out the Ink Pad absorber is full. I have replaced the ink pad. I don't want to purchase a new printer as this one is a beast and I love it.

*STOP PRESS* Mine shut down and would not reboot. Found out that if you disconnect the power cord for at least 30s - and hold down the on/off button - you get the power back. Did the procedure you suggested and it did work. Had to do it twice as first time the maintenance screen didn't come back on after '99' - just an error message - but I have been back in and it's reset to '0' The 'near full' message still shows on the screen though - so it's on borrowed time!

A mí me fue perfecto pero tuve que abrir la impresora quitar un platico que tiene el depósito residual por encima de las almohadilla sacar las almohadillas lavar con agua espera uno o dos días a que se sequen y ponerlas de nuevo y perfecto si no haces eso tiene un sensor que indica que está lleno y no funciona el purga y sigue saliendo el mensajes de almohadillas llenas muchas gracias por el video . It was perfect for me, but I had to open the printer, remove a plate that has the residual deposit above the pads, take out the pads, wash with water, wait a day or two for them to dry and put them back and perfect, if you don't do that, it has a sensor that indicates that it is full and does not work, the purge and the messages of full pads keep coming out, thank you very much for the video.

The purge counter was reset but I am getting the error message still that the ink absorber is "almost full". I actually took the machine apart and cleaned the ink absorber. Any tips?

How did you clean the ink absorber? HOw difficult it is to clean the absorber. I tried searchfor buying a new absorber to replace it but no success so far. It may not be easy to replace it, partiulary if tere is no diangram for inside parts.

On my DCP J552 DW, it showed an error message after the input of error code, but beside that, the warning is gone after rebooting with code 99 Thank you very much.

Hey, thanks for your tutorial. But it didn't completely reset it came back with an "Absorber near full" error, and it ran for few times and returned the "Absorber full" error again. open the printer and saw the wire connected to the absorber may be actual counter is stored in the Absorber itself, the only way to reset is to replace the Absorber I think like the ink cartridge.

Worked for our Brother J4420DW but the nearly full maintenance message does come up. I see below that there is a fix from Stevehorton "MACHINE ERR_1:46 message" which he cleared with a 2783 after going in maintence mode... see his note for correct instructions. Thanks to all.

I had the same problem, the only way I could clear the error 46 was by unplugging the printer from the wall and replugging back in. Still got the ink absorber full problem. Could it be a different number sequence for printers in the southern hemisphere?
