In 1970 I was a Midshipman completing my 3rd Class cruise in the North Atlantic on the USS Dyess (DD 880). Rather than fly back to the States, I accepted an offer to cross-deck from Dyess to the USS Wasp (CVS 18) for the return to NAS Quonset Point R.I.. where then 1stLT. Capers was X.O. of the MARDET. After meeting with him for counseling about accepting the Marine Option for Commissioning he invited me to work-out with his Marines each day. If not for his influence I might have never "Gone Marine." After commissioning in '73, I served 25 years retiring in '98 as a LtCol..

I personally spoke with several Marines. One of them wrote a book that is on the common reading list. He was with my dad's best friend's brother, on an island far away…… Another one flew F4 phantoms in close support, and his conduct was to this day unrecognized as he flew 16 passes trailing smoke because one of his engines was out, but the men were gonna be overrun and he was the only plane they had and these guys had for a little while… Another Marine I spoke with was with the China Marines, He saw the fall of Shanghai and was at Suwchow creek and the Philippines and witness to the Asiatic fleet and what happened He saw the taunts of the Imperial bluejackets and what they did there to capturedcivilians Babies and bayonettes I met another Marine and he was a simple schoolteacher, but a bigger and greater man they're never was Just as the man who made it through the Pacific lived humbly and his last days and a little trailer home So these un assuming quiet men live amongst us I knew a Marine, who never gave up after he was down to behind enemy lines, and this, perhaps one of the greatest aviators who ever lived I can go on and on…… None of these men are properly decorated in fact, the fellow who wrote the book Pacific because nobody survived none of the officers survived. He never got the congressional medal of honor He thought about that and stated the real heros were the guys left behind or the older Marines in Australia who lived thru the dark to show them how to live I can go on and on with other Marines and I can guarantee you that not one of them that I've met cared about the decorations or the accolades They All expressed one thing…… Love… Of others Folk they dont even know....seeing a nearby landing barge turn into a torch and knowing those men are family I know that sounds crazy I know, but what they said was that when I asked them why did you do this? It was along the lines of so somebody else didn't have to because they knew it was somebody else's kid who would they knew they had a mission that if they didn't do it … Somebody else would go but it was a marines job no body else Then, now, 100 years from now These quiet men who are old are still Marines and none need nor want decoration or even recognition from people who have never sweat out a rain of mortar fire or bugs in your bedroll They were a generation of heros It was just them doing their job One of them raced across Japan They knew the Japanese could suddenly turn around and wipeout our prisoners of war, and so he raced to find a prisoner of war camp, but when he got there, he saw the Roundel on a flag at a camp as he approached It broke him to see the condition of these men but they were still beloved family. Marines They don't need accolades or want them Most of them never even told their personal families stories that would make a grown man weep I asked one of them why and he just said it's my daughter that's why you never said a word men, I spoke with have never forgotten the names of their best buddies who got left behind I'm not doing a very good job explaining this one Great men do great things in critical moments despite the consequence or odds because it is who they are and what they believe in as a family This may seem incoherent or not make sence ...go tell it to the Marines...they get it

I was a Marine from 1978 to 1981 and I do not recall serving with any black officers. I do not remember names but can see faces in my head and I do not remember any black officers, and very few female officers. I got yelled at by one for not saluting her. She was pretty far away and I couldn't see what she was. She bitched and said when in doubt salute! I joined the Army in 1985 and both black officers, females, and black female officers were quite the norm! That was the Army though not the Marines.

Shitty leaders are overly self conscious of their weaknesses, get jealous of good leaders and will never experience the true loyalty of the familial type relationships that we develop w/ each other. A good leader can literally lead their troops through hell and back because they lead from the front and have more expectations from themselves than they do their troops. A good young troop lead well eats that stuff up and feels like they can accomplish the impossible. Having good leaders in life taught me how to be a grown up and led to success in my life. Just a reminder The Congressional Medal of Honor does not exist in our military. The medal is normally awarded by the president of the United States (the commander in chief of the armed forces) and is presented "in the name of the United States Congress. The official name is Medal of Honor. It is aggravating to hear military personnel disregarding historical facts by adding congressional to the official name. I was in the Army in the late sixties and never heard the term "African American" used in speech or military documents and correspondence. Using current descriptive terms for people to describe the past is like rewriting history. Major Capers deserves better.

Allow me to inject some reality. The Navy as a whole is politically motivated community, and the Army has followed suit. The Marine Corps hasn’t sold out as a whole as with the other branches. Marine’s don’t hand out medals or awards lightly. Therefore a case such as this should catch (anyone in position of authority) their attention. Never mind the physical attributes of today’s military, let’s talk about the strength to do what’s right. This is a no brainer. And BTW I’m a retired Seabee Chief whose life is indebted to America’s finest.

All medals are "congressional" in that they have to be approved by the House and Senate. No medal has the word "congressional" in its name.

This is what happens when you have senior commanders that are promoted and placed in these command positions not based on merit but on political connections, political correctness, or DEI. There seems to be a rather large number of senior commanders in today's military that falls into one of these three latter categories. While speaking about senior commanders. Why is it that the US military in 2020 had as many flag rank officers as it did in 1945? I have read several articles in the last 2 years talking about this. When the ENTIRE manpower of US military combined in 2020 does not equal that of the US Army ALONE in 1945 why does the military need the same number flag rank officers? During WW II we had majors, captains, and even Lieutenants as liaisons to defense contractors, running the National defense rail transportation network, and in charge of the national defense construction projects. Today you will not see anyone not wearing stars on their collars doing anything. The military has become to top heavy. To many chief and not enough Indians. Especially when those at the top have lost track of what is going on in the trenches, what is happening with their personnel. They are all tied up with the latest wizbang gadget to come along and have lost sight of taking care of their troops, providing for the welfare of their troops on and OFF the battlefield. They want all of the shiny new fancy toys, but they neglect their troops. They are sacrificing dependability, durability, longevity in these shiny new toys also. I hear many stories about how this new stuff breaks too easy, and it wears out quick. Look at Navy ships. They used to build them to last for 30 years, now your doing good to get 10-15 out of them before it's either to the breakers or into the shipyard for major shipyard work. There is not a single ship in the US Navy to short of the USS Constitution that will last as long as the USS Texas BB35 has. And the Air Force now PLANS to replace aircraft every 5-10 years.

Perfect Example why the Academies should be closed until such time as the Military is cleansed of the Woke leadership and atmosphere which currently permeates the DoD.

Sorry, do not agree with the MOH. He offered, he tried, and he was saved. The man who saved him should get recognition. Silver seems appropriate. The ACADEMY's were correect.

Sir, The Corps is riddled with political activism at the top. Not all but many. Of those many are officers & senior enlisted. Certainly the Corps is better trained today with new & advanced weaponry but the fact is it has become politicized by those wishing to feather their own nest from top to bottom. I still have a problem with Courage, Honor & Commitment rather than God, Country & Corps. Removing God burned my ass to a fair thee well. The Corps is just as much traditional as it is innovative, there is no room dei or woke BS just as there is no room individualism. As much as I hate to say it, the majors story isn't unusual. Acts of valor & selflessness are still there but they aren't rewarded as they should be but heroic acts are often only seen on the battlefield by those of us who entrust our lives in the man beside us. No review board can ascertain what is written on a piece of paper with the emotion or feelings akin to those felt when witnesses testify to the actions of another. Those who sit in the rear with the gear & don't wear a Combat Action Ribbon have no business deciding who is worthy of an award or a battlefield promotion for that matter.

Great video Sentinel! You said "that's not who we are" and I say that's exactly who the Marine Corps. is today. Be glad you're out. My dad flew PBJ's (B-25s) in WWII, my wife's grandfather was in WWII (he served in both World Wars) as was her uncle, I was in, my brother was in, my niece was in, my two nephews were in, my son was in and there's no way in hell I'd ever recommend anyone join today.

@@sentinel360 That's such a shame. My son, who had 9 years in, told me the following story when I asked why he was getting out. On LaJeune, there was a Sgt whose wife had been killed in a traffic accident on Sunday. During the hectic Monday he was informed by his E-8 (I'm deliberately not using the term Master Sargeant) he had to be back on base because unmarried Sergeants can't live off base. So, he had to fire sale everything he and his wife owned and had to surrender his 2 dogs to the shelter. How's that for the Marine brotherhood? I told him no problem. Like my old man always me, there's nothing better than a wartime Marine Corps. And nothing worse than a peacetime Marine Corps. He always told me I was so lucky to have never served in combat. I believed him.
