I went to community college, got my associates degree and then transferred to a 4-year university for my bachelors. Because of my low income, my grants during community college covered all of my academic expenses. Didn’t take out loans until I transferred and did the cheapest options possible. Lived off (but close to) campus, biked to class almost every day, packed my lunch, no meal plan, and worked my way through college part time. I graduated with about $11k in student loans and I’m on track to be done paying it off in the next 5 months. You just gotta be smart, discipline and have a plan if you agree to take out loans.

My mom told me that in 4th grade when my older sister was getting ready to take the SATs. I asked how I would pay for it then and she said I better get scholarships. So I always focused on getting good grades. Got 22k a year from my school, financial aid for low income covered the rest of my tuition, and then I worked and won an additional 15k in competitive scholarships to help with room and board for 3 years. Took out about 22k in loans which I expect to pay back within a half a year after I start working at the job I have lined up. When I wanted to go to graduate school for a year, I told my school I only would pay if I didn't have to take out more loans. The degree wasn't something I absolutely needed. They gave me a 10k tuition discount on the degree and I was able to cash flow the rest working overtime.

I worked with the lender to get them out of default, paid on time for awhile. I also had racked up a sizeable amount of credit card debt, which I also started chipping away at while at least making the minimum payments. In the period of about 2 or 3 years my credit score shot up 200+ points. I only recently decided to aggressively pay off my debt and am now working on my last debt which is my car! 1. If you're going to a state school, make sure it's close enough to your home so that you can commute there. You can't take advantage of in-state tuition if you're coming from a different part of the state and therefore have to pay for campus housing. 2. Pick a school you can afford. Affordability will vary on an individual basis. 3. It matters less what your major is and more what you do outside of your classes, that is, what practical experiences you're getting. You have to do part-time jobs/internships/other programs throughout college pertaining to the kind of job you want. When it comes down to it, employers don't care about your major; what matters is what skills you're bringing to the table. Look at job descriptions for positions you're interested in and make sure you have experiences that allow you to build those skills before you graduate. That's basically what I did. I graduated last year (non-STEM major), got a job about six weeks after I graduated, and will be able to pay back my loans completely in 5 years. And I went to a private college.

The guy at the end said, the rule of thumb should essentially be to take out less in student loans than your annual income. The problem with that is most students can not accurately predict their entry level income. Every major, field, and city is so different, it’s hard to predict. I recommend estimating the lower side of entry level. With education to engineering majors it’s a large swing, from business to nursing majors it’s a large swing, from humanities to computer science it’s a large swing.

I agree. I believe that the schools need to be more involved with providing factual data of incomes per majors. Perhaps, that would help students make more economically feasible decisions.

I was fortunate to have some financial wits and some merit based scholarships when I was young to avoid taking on loans. I'm proud of my choices, and if I was to expect everyone to make the same choices there would not be anything to be proud about. The issue is that finances are not talked about or taught to young people, while college is drilled into your mind as the only path for adult success. 17 year olds are brainwashed that they HAVE to go to college or be a deadbeat. To those who resisted that brainwashing, congratulations and kudos! To be proud of your choice is also to acknowledge that you have done something extraordinary from the others, and if you expected everyone to do what you did, then you have nothing to be proud of in the first place. Hope that makes sense. If I took a bunch of kids and told them to swim from one end of a pool to another without teaching them how to swim, most would drown. Some may have the innate reflexes to float and swim over to the other end. Think about how cruel it would be to congratulate the ones who made it, while watching the ones who drown with zero empathy. It's their fault they drowned, right?
@morgynwiththewhy95073 жыл бұрын
More floaters (scholarships) need to be provided to help students. Decent scholarships are hard to get. There are a lot of $1000 scholarships but students are competing with hundreds of other students for $1000 which pays for like 4 used textbooks for one semester and tuition is over $35,000 a year.

Going to college is a choice. Taking out student loans is a choice. Not doing more research about what degree you're going to get and the lack of demand afterwards is also a choice. You can learn things the easy way or the hard way, either way, you have to pay back the money you borrowed. That's how a loan works.
@agentlatwa45253 жыл бұрын
The rationality of it doesn't make sense though. So you aren't trusted at 18 to drink alcohol, rent a car, or rent many homes, but your trusted to responsibly decide to start taking 60k in loans. That doesn't make any sense to me

I don’t understand how people feel entitled to not repay debt. Nobody told you that you have to even go to college or take out debt. Why should student loans be cancelled but not mortgage or car loans? Also I also partially blame the government who decided it was a bright idea to allow 18years olds with 0 concept of the value of money thousands of dollars without confirming how can actually graduate with a marketable skill.
@Opethfeldt2 жыл бұрын
Most people are zombies nowadays. They're told to go to college because it's just "what you do" and they have no idea what road they're heading down and what it's going to mean for them. You're making the false assumption most people are "awake" at age 18 and choosing whether to go to college.

I went to CC first, then transferred to 2 year private. Now fully employed with only 10k in student loans (worked part time during school). If you would do the math before you taking 100k out on a mortgage you should do the math before taking 100k for school.

@@callmeosho7792 okay, so using myself as an example. I was a first generation college student. My parents had no idea how to help me and we were low income. Luckily I had a professor that helped me out and explained a lot of how to handle college costs. I originally had scholarships that covered most of my costs but those ran out after a couple years and I was 5 years in college and basically my last year was all student loans, but at that point I was trying to graduate. I graduated with 32k of loans and so far have paid 20k. My parents did help me out but it still was mostly on me. That was all with good guidance and I've met people that were first gen like myself and were straight up told to just get loans by the school and their parents thought it was the best thing since they never had an education. Colleges are corporations that take advantage of every little thing they can. Granted there are a good chunk of people that just want to go to college to get the experience but I am mostly defending the people that went to college and actually try to get something out of it and are sadly trapped in loans I'm glad you were around good guidance to make you better financially stable but you should see the student loan crisis goes beyond "people being stupid at 18"
