Rega Elex MK4 Overview

Here at Dreamonoid's Hi-Fi we just got in out Rega Elex MK4 and have a lot to say. This combination of analog and digital is must have for anyone looking for electronics in a reasonable price, and small form factor. Check out the video and let us know what you think.

It sounds immense!! Coming from Brio-R, I had high hopes, as my Focal Chora 826s sounded thin. Enter the Mk4... Woah!! Also feel the DAC sounds better than my Node2i, or should I say different, more open perhaps. Its splitting hairs. BUT the power increase from Brio-R to Elex Mk4 is amazing, sounds like we added a subwoofer ;)

@@Dreamonoids yeah we love it. Had to fix the sample rate in roon, as I get the dreaded re-clocking click. Other than that love the internal dac. And that beautiful Rega sound that we love so much. They just hit differently!

Does the Rega elicit mk5 DAC sounds better or does it only have more power? The DAC is based on a Wolfson DAC chip, but the circuit embedding the DAC is a Rega design. (Wolfson WM8742 chip)

While the MK4 is a great improvement over its predecessor the Elicit is on another level. If you have the coin the Elicit is a joy.

We have them With the F502s and they sounds amazing. 501s would sing perfectly.

Would it pair well with dali oberon 5 i.e. not too bright sounding?

Should pair nicely. We’ve used rega with Dali in the past and it’s a great matchup. Definitely not a bright sound. We don’t like bright amps.

@@Dreamonoids an old amplifier I found at a dollar bill. I would like to change with a Rega amplifier, I’ve heard they work well with the turntables.

The Elex MK4 is a lot of amp and very nice. The Elicit MK5 is much better, but only if you hear it. Meaning unless you plan to compare them directly, I bet if you get the Elex MK4 you will be happy for some time before feeling the need to upgrade. If you have the funds I recommend jumping to the elicit.

You say this can play Apple lossless with an iPhone? Technically that is only possible with a physical connection. Apple camera connect (lightening to usb) connect to a USB A to B into USB. Do they have a tie up with Apple to be able to stream lossless over air play ? If so that is amazing and hardly any else out there? Can you please clarify the iPhone to this amp connection for this ?

We are using an AirPort Express that connects to the optical in connection. Since this is an Apple product it allows the lossless to be streamed. It’s a third party workaround. Check eBay for the AirPort Express if you want to try it out. Maybe we will do a video on it.

The apple airport streaming protocol is Apple lossless itself. That’s what makes this so trick, so the phone streams lossless and the airplay protocol is Apple Lossless.

That is true but it is not yet supported even on decent streamers like bluesound node even though it supports airplay. Also not any usb cable from a iPhone or iPad will work. Only Apple Original camera connect cable and probably few more expensive ones will work.The AirPort Express or Older Apple TV with Toslink is not a worthwhile investment unless one already has one. The only other option is to use a hdmi audio extractor which again not a elegant solution. It remains to be seen when Apple will make this a bit more open. But good to know the inbuilt DAC on the Rega Elex M4K supports the codec for Apple Lossless.

@@rkumarblr1 it does not support Apple Lossless, the AirPort Express itself takes the Apple Lossless and converts it to PCM and outputs through optical.

Can I ask a question, why do you guys never return phone calls? I've tried calling numerous times and according to Google your hours of operation are only on Saturday. I mean I'll find it frankly quite ridiculous especially when somebody is potentially willing to spend money with you that you won't even return phone calls, also just a critique, and I managed two high-end bicycle shops, I find it unfathomable how a business could stay in business only operating one day a week with those sorts of hours. Anyway I'm not angry and I don't mean to criticize I'm just frustrated

Sorry about this experience. Email us directly as our phone line tends to get swamped with calls nationwide, and unfortunately, with lots of bots. As for business practices well we’ve been operating in the green for 5 years, and this model just works best with our cliental. Competition is cities such as Austin have also adopted the same model even not being open at all and by appointment only. Regardless of all that email us, and we’d love to help anyway we can to make this right. We have also been expanding to Bryan Texas which was a big move for us. We clearly need to be better about the phone. Hope this answers your questions.

I will never understand digital inputs on high end amps. All of us who would buy a Regga have at least a few high-end streamers and D/A converters at home. And we keep throwing money at built-in crap DACs that we'll never use!

I’d have to disagree and say the internal DAC is quite good now. Rega’s research and development doesn’t put out products that aren’t well thought out and tested.

What is wrong with Rega? You add a Dac but leave out USB connection thats what you call deal breaker.

It’s a step in the right direction. Previous model didn’t have usb, optical, or coaxial. Didn’t have digital at all.
