I have watched 2 dozen videos on the ECM motor and controls and nobody ever goes into detail about what component of control failed and how to figure that out. 2 things happen with controls. They either will not run or will not shut off. I'd like someone to explain what on control board would cause either of those.

My failure mode is a little different. The motor just jiggles back and forth a number of times, never actually starting, and then just gives up.

@@kf3en I have this same situation. Did you confirm that the control module was bad and the motor good?

@@rakembuzz Yes, motor was good, control module was bad, but you get both when you buy the spare motor, so I swapped the entire unit. You can ohm out the windings on the motor to determine if it is still good. (95% of the time I would guess the motor is good, especially, if it ohms out and still spins ok. It is common knowledge on the web here that the control modules go out often and are susceptible to surges on you line. Be advised that you may need to buy a fan puller tool to get the blower fan off of the motor shaft. (amazon)

The main reason why no body goes into greater details to how the electronic circuit works. On the level of the theory of operation! Is because the manufacture doesn't have a schematic diagram of the PCB. To place on line to read. Then how could you trouble shoot it with a oscilloscope and VOM to check the signals driving the field coils. And the DC control logic voltages from the miro processor Driving the power driver transistors. There are no voltage levels on a schematic. And the manufacturer well not sell you diodes or IC chips or any type of semiconductors. So the big question for the day is what good is it going to do to explain the circuits if you can not buy a small semiconductor. You need to replace the complete circuit board. The same is true for a smart thermostat.

I've done some diagnostic testing using jumpers. My ECM2.3 just sort of rumbles and tries to spin but doesn't. I'm assuming it's getting power. Any idea if it's the control unit or actual motor that might be bad?

I have a ac fan that wont turn off and the hvac tech says it a bad motor. Have you ever seen this happen. I could possible see it being the motor control but wouldnt think it would be a motor going bad. Looks like my part number is a 6205E.

If it's the blower motor, then the relay in the ECM control module is bad.

Do you know what is the biggest problem with the new ECM motor. They are very expansive to have to replace. In comparison to a SPC AC motor. What the manufacture dident think of doing. Was to design the ECM motor to be made as two separate components. It is the electronic module that is going to malfunction that has the semiconductors on the PC board. Not the permanent magnets and rotor Or field coil. So they should manufacture it as two separate parts from each other. They could be separated. And then order a new electronic module to be replaced to the complete motor assemble. Now the cost of the repair is $300.oo cheaper. You do not need to have the complete ECM purchased. Now tha customer has a lower expansive service call to fix the gas furnace Or two stage AC. Air handler. Why are they not doing this?

class action suit I should think.. Planned obsolescence ploy to sell a new furnace when the rest of the unit is just fine and would work another 15 years if that steaming GE ECM pile didn't have the electronics near a friggin heat source. They should have the crap sued out of them.. Just disgusting.
