my first thought as a gardener who goes through compost faster than i can make it regardless of the amount was "hmmm, 150 tons probably won't be enough compost."

I love this. I recover about 100 lbs of used coffee grounds every week from a local coffee shop and use it for garden compost. Everyone can do something.

In Austria there is a public composting and they use the methan from it for heating of the city. So it's even better for environment, I think.
@RegenerativeJourney
@RegenerativeJourney 2 жыл бұрын
That's really smart to use the methane from composting as heating fuel. Some places in the US do that but I don't think it's very common. Hopefully it catches on.

This is so great--we need this everywhere! Asking from the Northeast (Maine): Could you point me in a direction to find out what the optimal equipment set up and procedures would be to start up a compost operation on a mid-size town scale? I do my own composting in my backyard, I am familiar with Dr. Elaine Ingham's work (a bit), and I have operated an excavator, and I might be able to coordinate with some local high school kids to work on the pick-up routes... Any advice for how to really get this off the ground (ha-ha! no pun intended...)? Do you have a business email?
@RegenerativeJourney
@RegenerativeJourney 3 жыл бұрын
You may want to contact Alissa directly. I think she'd been happy to point you in the right direction. Her contact info is at the bottom of this webpage: www.dirtrichcompost.com/. There are also at least a couple other compost operations in New Hampshire and northeast Massachusetts that you could check out. mrfoxcomposting.com/ blackearthcompost.com/ Also, Maine has arguably the best composting school out there, though, I'm not sure how up to date they are on regenerative agriculture. If you're serious about creating a commercial compost business I would recommend starting with the course offered through them: composting.org/. Good luck and go for it!

@@RegenerativeJourney Thanks so much for detailed reply! I know of several other composting businesses operating within, say, 20 miles of my town, but it seems to me the more local the better--this should be happening everywhere... I will take your suggestions... Many thanks again!

Amazing video as usual. Trying to figure out how a small farm can do this with no expensive Special equipment. Can someone do this on a small scale.
@jameskniskern2261
@jameskniskern2261 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Be mindful of managing any runoff. Keep your waterways clean, and when in doubt, add more carbon! :) If you have a tractor, access to large amounts of carbon (cardboard, woodchips, sawdust, etc.) and have the time to gather materials from locals, you can do it. You can make the compost in as small or as large batches as you are able to handle. Good luck.

@@jameskniskern2261 our local council does it on a larger scale and to do this they collect brown bins every other week. The brown bins mostly contain grass cutting and garden cuttings and they turn this into compost. Turning and aireating is key

Do you even have meat in your compost? Think I see it in your video. Is that possible? And these bags are also ok? In Austria not allowed in biological waste for composting...
@RegenerativeJourney
@RegenerativeJourney 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, both the meat and compostable plastic bags are ok. They are composted at high enough temperatures for long periods of time to make sure they are safely and completely broken down.
