If there were more plants types, like vines and shrubs like raspberries and grapes growing amongst the trees, or nut trees intermixed with different fruit trees this would improve soil more than grasses and a monocropped orchard. Using livestock to manage culls, crop residues, fertility, weeds and pests while avoiding overgrazing, and allowing sufficient pasture recovery time, adds to soil biome health, economic efficiency and water resiliency. Planting more food- and feed-producing trees improves mycelium. Mycelium moves nutrition and moisture that is primarily grass-based, and annual-based agriculture destroys the mycelium compnnections

I found the information about predators enlightening. I had been wondering why CA, all the way down to SoCal, has so many gophers that destroy young fruit trees and food crops. The comments from Farmer Al would lead me to believe that the cause is ecological imbalance. The predator population is insufficient to keep the rodents in check. Also, very interesting: Farmer Al grew up in Berkeley, became a teacher, moved to Hawaii to teach, fell in love with farming there, and came back to CA to pursue his dream and passion.

What a great advert for Regen Orchards. This is the way to go given that fruit farmers, livestock farmers and veg farmers are all suffering from drought and water restrictions. Think the Austrian farmer you couldn't recall is Sepp Holzer.

I looked it up on the map. It's in Contra Costa County, CA, so VERY close to the SF Bay area, right where the Central Valley begins.
