It's not a matter of reason, it's a matter of habit, physical or emotional/mental dependance, or warped perception. It's not always a conscious choice to start these things, but even when it is, the ability to choose to keep doing them is more often than not lost after that first experience. The only thing they can choose to do after that point is to choose to get help. That choice is very hard to make for people caught up in these situations since their addiction/affliction seems to eclipse all else from their perspective in most cases. The reality is sad, but most of these people need outside intervention to recover. That intervention can be a long and often ugly process, but those that get through it usually say it's the best thing that's happened in their lives. The hardest part is finding and making that choice to accept the help. I've never been addicted to anything myself, but I've known many who have been. Thankfully, most of those I know have made it through to live better lives.
