Will Tariffs Doom Modern Comics

In this video, I jumped into the recent tariff wars between the US and Canada. Most single issue comics are printed in Canada and trucked across the border into the US. A 25-50% tariff has the potential to impact the comic book industry but it’s more complex than that.
Update: According to th AP, tariffs for Mexico and Canada have been plced on hold for the next 30-days

The tariffs and other actions by the US have motivated me and many others to cancel all services from USA and stop buying products from the USA, including comics and we are not in Canada or Mexico.

@@RegieCollects The USA is treating its own allies poorly and poor behavior should not be rewarded. Just as sanctions are placed on goods coming from countries like Russia, the same should be applied to the USA. Over the past year many here have begun to avoid Tesla products due to the way Elon behaves and the same is now happening with the whole of the USA. So, while the tariffs may not go ahead there is still going to be negative consequences for those trying to use them as an extortion tactic.

Stop the flow of ILLEGAL aliens and drugs from the south and if Canada is under the US nuclear dome and enjoy US defense measures, then Canada needs to pay their share all this being said COMICS may be a lead in the WOKE industry along with Disney and so many more delusional celebrities maybe this shake up is what the AMERICAN people wants and we don’t care no longer about sending US tax dollars to pay for transgender ideology in Gaza and or to communist states across the world just so they can fund terrorist organizations! No more handouts from AMERICA. Merit based hiring isn’t a bad thing, kids need to know now matter what their race Black, white, brown, yellow, or purple is they can succeed in life if they put in the work and NOT rely on or thinking they are owed anything. Whatever your sexual or religious preference is YOUR business NOT tax payer dollars so pay for your hormones from your own check. And GIVE FRANK CASTLE BACK HIS SKULL AND ATTITUDE LOL.

😂😂 I try bro. The tariff thing continues to evolve. I guess both the Canadian and Mexican tariffs have been put on hold. Only the Chinese tariffs went into effect. It seems that the negotiation tactic worked for 2 of the 3. Super pumped about that wall. It turned out pretty well. It’s come a long way.

Interesting topic.... I believe the only affect that the tariffs will have on Comics is the printing, shipping, and distribution. If companies are doing print runs (physical printing) off shore or in Canada, then tariffs will have a direct affect on getting the copies back to the State and the market up will be applied accordingly to make up for the losses from shipping, importing, and storage.

Since about 1968 to now most Marvel Comics printed by Quebecor, Canada. Marvel also printed by Ohio and Pennsylvania except graphic novels which are cheaper printed in China (now under USA tariff). Printed in Canada are DC, Image, Dark Horse, Boom, Dynamite, Mad Cave, Oni Press. 25% import tax at the PRINTER level could still start March 4, 2025; means inflation of about 50% at the USA LCS retailer level.

It appears that all of the tariffs have been put on hold between the US, Canada and Mexico. I became aware of the US to Canada tariff change after the video was released but updated the description with that detail. As I stated in the video, I think all of this is about negotiating change.

Covid. Shipping and supply chains were disrupted and everybody jumped at the opportunity to raise prices. Once prices go up they don’t come back down.

It’s not a bad argument-thought the same myself. The argument against that would be that Canada has a lot of very large printers, cheap lumber and a weak dollar versus the US. I do like the idea of American manufacturing but it’s comes at a price.

Unfortunately, there are no foundations to make anything that we as a country, so that is a serious issue. Also, lack of employment and employees are an issue.

An interesting twist with tariffs: US manufacturers may simply decide to focus not on increasing market share, but on increasing their own profit margins. They can do so simply by increasing their prices. US Steel companies apparently did exactly that when steel tariffs were introduced. They increased their prices for US steel consumers, safe in the knowledge that their consumers could now not so easily import steel from abroad. It is also a lot safer for manufacturers. Sure, you could try to increase your market share when tariffs hobble your competitor. Add new machines, hire new workers, but that is risky and very costly. You will need years to turn a profit, and the tariffs may well be gone within a few years. With Trump, who knows? Much safer to just increase your prices on what you currently produce and enjoy a few bumper profit years (or how long the tariffs last). The more I learn about tariffs, the more I realize they are a complicated thing. Their impact depends on many factors. But one possible end result is US manufacturers increasing their prices for now captive US consumers, leading to higher profit margins for them.

@@RegieCollects I haven't bought anything from the Big 2 since 2018. I have either help crowd fund from certain creators, but I had also read and collected The Last Ronin run from IDW - so to be fair, its not all bad but it only means there are exceptions to every rule.

Cooler heads will prevail, but even if new books got hit with tariffs, it'd be like shooting an injured animal. It'd be a mercy killing. New books are nothing but woke indoctrination and the desecration of the work of masters like Lee, Kirby, Kane, et al. Only new book worth a damn is Mark Spears Monsters and even that is only because of rhe beautiful covers. The story is just average.
