As a writer and the grandchild of two English majors, there is nothing I love more than people interpreting my writing in ways that never even occurred to me. I think it's great that a piece of art can be seen in a hundred different ways by a hundred different people. Everyone looks at art differently. That's the beauty of art.

All the rowboats in the paintings They keep trying to row away And the captains' worried faces Stay contorted and staring at the waves They'll keep hanging in their gold frames For forever, forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away Hear them whispering french and german Dutch, italian, and latin When no one's looking i fetch a sculpture Marble, gold, and soft as satin But the most special are the most lonely God, i pity the violins In glass coffins they keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing, how to sing First there's lights out, then there's lock up Masterpieces serving maximum sentences It's their own fault for being timeless There's a price you pay and a consequence All the galleries, the museums Here's your ticket, welcome to the tombs They're just public mausoleums The living dead fill every room But the most special are the most lonely God, i pity the violins In glass coffins they keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing They will stay there in their gold frames For forever, forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away First there's lights out, then there's lock up Masterpieces serving maximum sentences It's their own fault for being timeless There's a price you pay and a consequence All the galleries, the museums They will stay there forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away

I think the message in this song runs deeper than just the way we treat art. I think in this song, she's expressing a regret for our inability to understand it. Many people see a painting, admire it for a few moments, and then move on. She also says, "God, I pity the violins / In the glass coffins, they keep coughin' / They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing, how to sing." As people fail to understand great art, mankind forgets how to create it. "Singing" is a metaphor for the creation of art.

Sometimes Regina's lyrics are something you have to understand with your soul, not your logic. When I listen to her, I don't break it down and say, "What does this literally mean?" I just let her songs make me feel, and I think that's the sign of a beautiful poet and artist.

So? She's amazing... We all know this,we don't all need to get all existential,and angst-y to appreciate her. She Is beautiful,can't get around that fact. Doesn't mean we don't appreciate the song. We just love to look and listen at the same time,to bask in the magnificent aura of Her presence. It's a whole gestalt experience with Regina. I suppose,be you male female attack helicopter,or lycanthrope, You only listen to the message huh? It's why we watch videos instead of only listening to the radio. Yes it could be misconstrued as shallow if everything on this thread was purely about her looks. It ain't though is it? We love her; her physical beauty; the beauty of her prose,and the beauty of Her in the whole. I was mainly gonna say how wonderful she looks in casual clothes,but you pissed me off. This is one of my favorite songs, and it’s partly because I can relate to the feeling of not being understood, which is what I think this song is about. I think the line, “the most special, are the most lonely” sums up how I’ve felt most of my life. I’m too different from most people, and that’s not to put myself on some kind of pedestal and say I’m better than anyone else, on the contrary, I believe it makes me worse because it’s painful and lonely not to be understood. It’s a curse. Just like the dusty art in a museum, people will look at it but they may never understand it. I think this song is lamenting the fact that to be different or unique is not the beautiful thing others make it out to be, but a curse. “It’s their own fault, for being timeless, a price to pay and a consequence.” The consequence of wishing to be unique is that nobody will understand you. I’d rather be “plain” and “basic” if it means belonging.

In (about) the words of my Theology teacher, calling someone "hot" just makes them into a piece of meat. They're just an object in those terms. We are all people of God, or whatever we believe in if we do, and we should be loved for that, for who we are, not how we are characterized.

that is the sad fate of men, we limit things, we define so that we understand. we create words that limit the eternity of ideas, we name things and define them as if they only have that definition for their meaning, so even beauty which is eternal is captured in a frame, in shape of a scultpure, in a 4 minute music. you know why? because even our bodies limit our eternal soul, we put doors on eternal things before we experience them. it may sound sad but this reality is actually beautiful too, gives us a bit of chaos and thus inspire more emotion, more passion, more art. don't be sad sir, i adore artists! :D

I think it means that art should never be separated from people. Once it was put in a museum, they become distance and hard to approach, as if only a few learnt or experts can understand their beauty. It shouldn't be the case. Art should always be connected to people, since it's a form of communication through which artists expressed their ideas. I think she's criticizing that nowadays art had become some kind of luxury and become meaningless and therefore, dead.
@bloodyredbird27724 жыл бұрын
Ad Lockhorst yep, while at the same time there’s street singers performing for free, artists on the internet, and people disregard them because they think their art is free and therefore worthless. It reminds me a paragraph in little prince. You can’t tell an adult how beautiful a house is, you can’t tell him the color of the wall, the rose in the yard, etc, he won’t care. But if you tell him the price of it, he would immediately said: “ah, it’s a beautiful house.”

+Rosi Moone That's a cool perspective! And it could even tie into her loss in Vincent and the Doctor.

It’s also vaguely like the day of the Doctor. *spoilers!* With things escaping from (and being trapped in) paintings and all.

This is my favorite song. The only song that comes even close in my opinion is Fidelity.

In your opinion. I think there are ten or twenty or thirty better songs by her than this. This is one of her mainstream , accessable , straight forward tracks. Lyrically, vocally and compositionally its quite average compared to most of her work. The subject matter has Reginas unique style, but the track lacks that quirky creativity, inventiveness and diverse tempo and vocal range compared to tracks like, 'the consequence of sound' or 'Daniel Cowman'or 'The Trapper and the Furrier' or 'Oedipus' and lots of others. How many of her songs have you listened to?

It's like she is standing in the middle of a huge babbling crowd of posers and is the only one who can be understood, or merit listening to.

She is so talented and has an amazing voice. I love her so much! I like that she doesn't try to hard, and isn't always in the public for something stupid. She is beautiful, and I admire her as a person, singer, and songwriter!
