Great interview. Nice to hear Savuthy’s journey back home. Srok Khmer is not for everyone but it is a country that has many things to offer. Num Banjok should be the national food of the country, but the decision makers in Srok Khmer can’t accept what is real and true and always grasping what is popular for day.

Amok is a true Khmer dish, but he’s partially right-it’s not as common as something like Korko. Amok feels more like a dish for the elites; not every family cook knows how to make it, while most can prepare Korko. The reason Korko isn’t chosen as the national dish might be due to a few factors. One of them could be its complexity as an international dish-some foreigners might experience stomach upset because of the variety of vegetables and spices involved. By the way, street food in Cambodia is much more up to the standard nowadays as people become better financially and they start caring more about what they eat.

A lot of Cambodians are actually ethnic Lao most don't even know that because Lao people have assimilated into the Khmer empire and their parents don't mention it, even Sin Sisamouth was an ethnic Lao. If you grew up eating Laarb and Jaew Som, you're probably Lao. Isan is a Khmer/Lao tribe in Thailand.

@@Israeli_Prince so I'm not one of them as I grew up not eating these things 😂 Of course, there are many ethnicities in Cambodia

@@Israeli_Princeyour comment is so out there and unrelated to this video and Amok!😊 I study Southeast Asian languages and archaeology as a hobby, and to say “a lot” of Cambodians are Laotians simply because of the food we eat is just bizarre. I eat lots of Italian food but that doesn’t make me Italian. You brought up the Isan region, which is not a part of Srok Khmer but Thailand. Even then, Isan has a good mixture of Thai, Kuy, Khmer, Bro, Vietnamese and Chinese and not just Lao.

A lot of Cambodian Americans don't understand the reason why they parents never made some of Khmer dish. Is not because is not a Khmer dish. Some of the khmer dish they don't know how to make it either. Because of the war. Not just Khmer Rouge. Ther Cambodia was part of the Vietnam was too. If they parents is around 70s or less. Then yes they don't know how to make it. My mom make it for me some time in my life. And she is now 90 years old.

@Israeli_Prince who is the 1st king of Laos? What is the relationship between 1st Laos King and Khmer King. Why did Khmer King give 100,000 Khmer army to Laos? And all that army became Laos. 😂😂😂 Loas is new generation of Khmer. You need to study more about that history. Siam was under the Khmer Empire since the Sukhothai Kingdom. Thai first King Rama the 1st he half Khmer from the Mon Khmer of the Khmer Empire. Thai is another new generation of Khmer. Cambodian is the main root. We are the father and mother of Thai and laos. Know your history, man.

Great interview. Good to hear Vuthy’s journey back home. Srok is not for everyone but it has a lot to offer. Num banjok should be the national dish for the country. Every Khmer, local and abroad, has had num banjok at least once in their lifetime. It’s the quintessential Khmer dish. Alas, Khmer decision makers have a tendency to ignore what is real and true and grasp whatever is popular for the day.

However, a lot of Khmer people just want to get out because they can't stand being Khmer and being around other Khmer people. @warriorsack Online business. If you can work remotely, SE Asia is a no-brainer as the costs of living are still very affordable compared to Western countries. @@warriorsack If you're considering moving to Cambodia or some other country in Asia, I recommend visiting and staying for extended periods to make sure it's right for you. No place will be perfect. When I am in Cambodia there are some things about America that I miss, and vice versa. Apart from the lower cost of living, many Asian American expats feel more at home in Asia than they did in America where they were born and raised.

That's what I gather too. Medical emergencies will likely require a trip over to Bangkok unless the person can afford the private hospitals in cities like Phnom Penh. Basic check ups are available and affordable in major cities but yea, nobody knows when an unexpected disaster can happen.

On Jesus Christ, Cambodia is a treasure trove of affordability, where the cost of living echoes the whispers of the good old early '90s in killafornia. It offers a beautiful opportunity to step back in time, allowing you to rewrite your financial story and reshape your relationship with money, giving you a precious second chance at life. So, you better play your cards right or you just like fumbling and play victimize.
