While browsing Instagram, I was recommended 3 different methods of painting techniques and hacks. I wanted to try them out and see how well I can do from the first time! One of them was even a 5 minute craft!
I used:
- Sculpey Liquid Clay
- Sophie and Toffee Epoxy resin and UV resin (link below)
sophieandtoffe...
- Acrylic Paint
- Dollar Store canvas

I have done the resin/ink before and you have to use all Jacquard alcohol inks. I just went with the Piñata pack and it works best. The Jacquard white alcohol inks reacts with the rest of them and pulls the colors down to create the pretty rainbow petri dish effect! It takes practice because if you use too much ink the resin will not cure and will be tacky on the back. What is cool about that pack is you can use the gold ink mixed in for neat effects since it drops straight through to splatter on the bottom. I will also use the inks mixed in to color my 2 part resin! It works with any two part resin, it doesn't have to be Art Resin. :) In this case you actually DiD iT WrOnG. xD #nerdeficationsquad

Ok so what i think can help the resin one: 1. Do it in 3 thin layers of uv resin A clear layer, the layer with color then another clear layer 2. When using the inks dilute them all with extra alcohol Good luck nerdEcrafter :)

Uv resin won't work with alcohol based colorants. The thing I would say to change is using actual white alcohol ink. The way it's made is what makes it push the colors down.

She needs to use the actual alcohol ink it doesn't have to be that brand but it's got to be as close as you can and that white is the most important otherwise it won't work trust me I know and UV resin is not a good idea it won't work with that you got to use regular resin and the reason didn't work the first time is the ink it's got to say alcohol ink

Here is the 3 simple reasons why the resin project didn’t work (so you can retry it and get it right!). 1- you used the resin as soon as you mixed it, since you used such a thin resin it needed to set up a little bit before hand (this is why everything sank straight to the bottom) 2- you need a thicker layer of resin. What creates the effect is the ink spreading through the resin on its way down, if it’s too thin of a layer then you won’t get that effect since there isn’t enough room. 3- too much alcohol! Yes it takes a lot of ink when doing these projects but the key is thin layers of ink. Your first row of blue was perfect but then you used a little too much and blue ink is so strong that it’s why it got so dark so fast. Also alcohol affects how the resin cures, when doing this the resin will need more time to cure (if it’s a 24hr cure time it will take 36-48hours to cure) BUT when you added the straight alcohol to it, it killed your resin. It was too much alcohol to resin ratio that the resin will never cure. I hope this helps! I would love to see you try again and hope it works for you next time! This is an easy project to do but it is so easy for thinks to go wrong with the science side of it. Good luck!

Hi Jackie! I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this, but I figured it would be useful anyhow. I do a lot of dropping ink in resin pieces myself so I may know what went wrong. I want to say that the type of alcohol ink may have been the problem. I, and other artists that I've seen, use the Pinata inks which work beautifully. I haven't had a problem using them yet. Also, using white ink on top of each color is supposed to help that color sink to create the effects you've seen on Instagram. I wonder if the Chameleon inks had some sort of different reaction to each other and the resin than Pinata ink does. It's always worth a shot to try it out haha Oh! I also speak only for epoxy resin. I'm not sure how it would work with UV resin (if it would at all). Hope this is helpful!

I used to be a daycare teacher with 4-year-olds. I did the third technique with the kids, but instead of marbles, we used golf balls, and we put the paper in the bottom of a shallow plastic container (a shoebox would work too if you didn't mind cutting your paper down). All the kids had fun, but the most enthusiastic kiddo was one who NEVER participated in crafts! I never made him join, but I knew he was missing out on some fine motor development time, so I always encouraged him. This time, I told him he could use Spiderman colors, and he was ALL IN. His painting turned out nicely and his parents were so excited that they framed it!

i'm not sure if the brand of resin had any effect on your outcome our not, but i'm pretty sure you had too LITTLE resin in your mold for the amount of alcohol ink you put in! this unbalanced the ratio of your resin and didn't let it cure! the brand of alcohol inks used may also have an effect on the outcome as well, but if you really want to try it again, look up the Petri Dish resin technique by Josie Lewis! it works in smaller pieces too, so long as you don't put in too many drops of ink!

Tips: ~Oh! Acrylic and plastic type materials (inks\paint\etc) has a chemical reaction with most resin.... causes Ick and cancels the process of setting. ~Acrylic paint can be removed super easy from floor by Nail polish remover Aw man!! The final holey resin reminds me a ton of ice candles! You fill a candle mold with ice cubes or chunks of ice. Then you wait for the wax to harden and the ice to melt. You then pour out the water (just like that red dye). You can take out the candle and enjoy the holes tunneling into each other, or you can leave it in the mold and fill the holes with a new colour so the candle looks mottled Also Chicken is love. Chicken is life.

A bit of advice with the resin dyes- the example clip used cyan/yellow/magenta in combination as opposed to red/blue/yellow. Using CYM will get you much brighter and more vibrant colors with any sort of pigments (including paints!), RBY results in duller colors and are easier to unfortunately mix into various shades of brown. CYM is great for saturation and vibrancy, RBY is great for more subdued and darker colors.
