I dive the A700 carbon black. I love it because it is really light and jaw fatigue is minimal or none. On long dives it's worth it's weight in gold. It's an all around great regulator.

My favorite all time regulator is the old Poseidon Odin, looks like a shower head. Costly to service, but boy, on deep deco diving, air delivery was never a problem. Later, I switched to Zeagle (Apeks rebranded them early on).

Totally with you there chap! Poseidon are so much higher performance than anything since. Upstream valve design rules the roost.

I HEAR YA BROTHER!. THAT is the regulator all my newbie friends want to use from my line-up of regs. They like the sight "positive pressrue" feeling. They say that it gives them onfidence and they feel secure. An d the fact that the bubbles are sent off to the side. I use a Cyklon when I take photos. Ive bought two of the Xtreme versions lately, for ice diving and just cold weather scuba. The service of a JETSTREAM shold NOT be anmore expensive than any other reg. Parkway had exclusive distrubutorship parts in the U.S. and hey dropped the ball. I have a Zeagle and Apeks TX50 too-both excellent but not the "dive anywhere, under any conditions" regulators. NEVER been a freeze up in a POSEIDON. GREAT for diving in ice, like here inn Minnesota, USA.

I use the Apeks MTX in a long hose setup. This thing is built so tough it should last me my lifetime.

Using aqualung legend. Love it because it's ACD. stupid and clumsy friendly. Don't have to worry about water sprays or dust cap.

Regulator design makes little difference to casual divers who are diving in the tropics at depths less than 130ft: as long as they have been properly serviced.

_Atomic make good products. I dived with other brands and all ways come back. Decided to buy my own and had to have atomic for my spare. I went full face other wise I would have an m2 or other atomic stage 2_

As I'm new I'm a little confused about the 3rd stage and 4th stage regulators you mentioned, can't all 1st stages add dials and a second regulator?

Richard Slater Yes all first stages can add a regulator and gauges/ BCD inflator. When you buy a regulator it will come with the first and second stage. Then you have to buy the Octopus/alternate/third stage and gauges separately but most dive shops carry completely regulator kits and full scuba kits so you can buy all the regulator accessories or regulators and a BC (respectively) some full kits come with an exposure protection suit which is under debate whether it is good or bad because these are standard sizes compared to a custom fit

Stage 3 and 4 are basically package sales so that you don't have to get the gauge and octo separately

Second hand should be fine, but I'd definitely have it checked and serviced by a diveshop.

Definately worth it, get them serviced and you're good to go. Just don't get an exotic stuff. Scubapro is fine, they can be serviced everywhere, and there are parts for almost every regs they ever made. MK2 or MK10 with R190's or G250 for example, under $100 easily with gauges. There is no significant difference, even if manufacturers try to BS about the latest innovations... for the average diver, there is one thing, get a reliable air source. Reliability mostly comes from proper maintenance. If you dive in cold waters, close to freezing, or deep, i mean deeper than 40m, then go for Poseidon, as others have mentioned.
